To classify each stage for a progressing disease such as Alzheimer’s disease is a key issue for the disease prevention and treatment. In this study, we derived structural brain networks from diffusion-weighted MRI using whole-brain tractography since there is growing interest in relating connectivity measures to clinical, cognitive, and genetic data. Relatively little work has usedmachine learning to make inferences about variations in brain networks in the progression of the Alzheimer’s disease. Here we developed a framework to utilize generalized low rank approximations of matrices (GLRAM) and modified linear discrimination analysis for unsupervised feature learning and classification of connectivity matrices. We apply the methods to brain networks derived from DWI scans of 41 people with Alzheimer’s disease, 73 people with EMCI, 38 people with LMCI, 47 elderly healthy controls and 221 young healthy controls. Our results show that this new framework can significantly improve classification accuracy when combining multiple datasets;this suggests the value of using data beyond the classification task at hand to model variations in brain connectivity. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

The development of sustainable software has been identified as one of the key challenges in the field of computational science and engineering. However, there is currently no agreed definition of the concept. Current definitions range from a composite, non-functional requirement to simply an emergent property. This lack of clarity leads to confusion, and potentially to ineffective and inefficient efforts to develop sustainable software systems. The aim of this paper is to explore the emerging definitions of software sustainability from the field of software engineering in order to contribute to the question, what is software sustainability? The preliminary analysis suggests that the concept of software sustainability is complex and multifaceted with any consensus towards a shared definition within the field of software engineering yet to be achieved.

Write disturb on half-selected (HS) cells is investigated through electrical measurements and large-scale array simulations. The experimental results collected from the individual devices under constant stress voltage and consecutive pulse operation are correlated with the HS cells in large-scale arrays based on a physics-based SPICE compact model. The impact of write/read disturb on the HS cells at different locations of the arrays is analyzed. Design guidelines for the optimized array size based on the experimental data and HSPICE simulations are presented: e.g., a 16 kb array can maintain its stored data pattern for 5×10~6 pulses and will have 164 false bits among half-selected cells after write disturb.

Testing-as-a-Service (TaaS) in a cloud environment can leverage the computation power provided by the cloud. Specifically, testing can be scaled to large and dynamic workloads, executed in a distributed environment with hundreds of thousands of processors, and these processors may support concurrent and distributed test execution and analysis. TaaS may be implemented as SaaS and used to test SaaS applications. This paper proposes a TaaS design for SaaS combinatorial testing. Test Algebra (TA) and Adaptive Reasoning (AR) algorithm are used in the TaaS design.

Stacked HfO x based vertical RRAM with interface engineering for 3D cross-point architecture is fabricated using a cost-effective fabrication process. The excellent performances such as low reset current, fast switching speed, high switching endurance and disturbance immunity, good retention and self-selectivity are demonstrated in the fabricated HfO x based vertical RRAM devices. The scaling limit and the functionality along with a viable write/read scheme of the presented vertical RRAM are investigated. The experiments show that the pillar electrode thickness and the plane electrode thickness of the vertical RRAM can be scaled down to 3nm and 5nm without significant performance degradation, respectively.

A new method for estimating time-varying parameters of nonstationary AR signal models, based on adaptive recursive least squares with variable forgetting factors, is described. The adaptive estimator differs from the conventional one by the simultaneously estimation of AR model parameters and scale factor of prediction residuals, while the variable forgetting factor values are adapted to the nonstationary signal via a new extended prediction error detection scheme. The method has good adaptability in the non-stationary situations, and gives low bias and low variance at the stationary situations. The feasibility of the approach is demonstrated with simulations.

Simulation has been widely used in modeling engineering systems. A metamodel is a surrogate model used to approximate a computationally expensive simulation model. Extensive research has investigated the performance of different metamodeling techniques in terms of accuracy and/or robustness and concluded no model outperforms others across diverse problem structures. Motivated by this finding, this research proposes a bi-criteria (accuracy and robustness) optimized ensemble framework to optimally identify the contributions from each metamodel (Kriging, Support Vector Regression and Radial Basis Function), where uncertainties are modeled for evaluating robustness. Twenty-eight functions from the literature are tested. It is observed for most problems, a Pareto Frontier is obtained, while for some problems only a single point is obtained. Seven geometrical and statistical metrics are introduced to explore the relationships between the function properties and the ensemble models. It is concluded that the bi-criteria optimized ensembles render not only accurate but also robust metamodels.

The distinction between strong negation and default negation has been useful in answer set programming. We present an alternative account of strong negation, which lets us view strong negation in terms of the functional stable model semantics by Bartholomew and Lee. More specifically, we show that, under complete interpretations, minimizing both positive and negative literals in the traditional answer set semantics is essentially the same as ensuring the uniqueness of Boolean function values under the functional stable model semantics. The same account lets us view Lifschitz’s two-valued logic programs as a special case of the functional stable model semantics. In addition, we show how non-Boolean intensional functions can be eliminated in favor of Boolean intensional functions, and furthermore can be represented using strong negation, which provides a way to compute the functional stable model semantics using existing ASP solvers. We also note that similar results hold with the functional stable model semantics by Cabalar. © 2013 ***. All rights reserved.

Recently there has been an increasing interest in incorporating "intensional" functions in answer set programming. Intensional functions are those whose values can be described by other functions and predicates, rather than being pre-defined as in the standard answer set programming. We demonstrate that the functional stable model semantics plays an important role in the framework of "Answer Set Programming Modulo Theories (ASPMT)" -a tight integration of answer set programming and satisfiability modulo theories, under which existing integration approaches can be viewed as special cases where the role of functions is limited. We show that "tight" ASPMT programs can be translated into SMT instances, which is similar to the known relationship between ASP and SAT.
