Patient safety issues continue to be prevalent in delivering care with the electronic health record (EHR) and other health information technology (HIT) tools. Defining the unit of analysis for the study of clinical information systems is important based on the focus of the research. This study applies a conceptual framework with three levels of units of analysis for human-computer interaction (HCI) to identify and guide investigations at each level. Ethnographic observations and semi-structured, key-informant interviews were conducted with 40 healthcare workers across five primary care clinics, nine specialty clinics, and one inpatient ward at a tertiary-care Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). Two researchers recorded the interactions and interview responses of 40 healthcare workers related to their work with computerized consultations, clinical documentation, and the EHR in general. Patient safety issues from these data were categorized using three different units of analysis: EHR interface-, team coordination / workflow-, and organizational-levels. A total of 30 patient safety issues were identified; 17 emerged from the observation and interview data on computerized consults, 10 from the data on clinical documentation, and 3 were related to the EHR in general. Patient safety issues were organized by level of unit of analysis and mapped to specific methods that could be used for further investigation. Relevant concepts are discussed to help guide investigations at each level.

Narrations of visual content, or audio descriptions, enhance the accessibility of video media for individuals who are blind. While the adoption of this assistive technology continues to broaden, audio descriptions have several limitations: they often lack detail (i.e., are abridged) to fit within dialogue-free gaps, and are difficult to use in fast-paced sequences or scenes of continuous dialogue. Haptic descriptions offer a promising augmentation to audio descriptions by conveying information through the sense of touch. This work presents audio-haptic descriptions with a user evaluation showing how haptic descriptions can add relevant information to films for improved comprehension.

Cloud is gaining momentum but its true potential is hampered by the security concerns it has raised. Having vulnerable virtual machines in a virtualized environment is one such concern. Vulnerable virtual machines are an easy target and existence of such weak nodes in a network jeopardizes its entire security structure. Resource sharing nature of cloud favors the attacker, in that, compromised machines can be used to launch further devastating attacks. First line of defense in such case is to prevent vulnerabilities of a cloud network from being compromised and if not, to prevent propagation of the attack. To create this line of defense, we propose a hybrid intrusion detection framework to detect vulnerabilities, attacks, and their carriers, i.e. malicious processes in the virtual network and virtual machines. This framework is built on attack graph based analytical models, VMM-based malicious process detection, and reconfigurable virtual network-based countermeasures. The proposed framework leverages Software Defined Networking to build a monitor and control plane over distributed programmable virtual switches in order to significantly improve the attack detection and mitigate the attack consequences. The system and security evaluations demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed solution.

Large datasets and time-consuming processes have become the norm in scientific computing applications. The exploration phase in the development of scientific workflows involves trial-and-error with workflow components, which can take a lot of time given the time-consuming nature of the workflow tasks. These facts suggest the possibility of reducing the development time by reusing intermediate data whenever possible. However the storage space is always limited. This introduces a problem: which intermediate datasets from one workflow should be kept to be reused in another workflow, with a limited amount of storage. For the general class of series parallel graphs, we model this problem using a non-linear integer programming formulation and show that it is NP-Hard. We provide a branch and bound optimal algorithm as well as efficient heuristics. We conducted experiments over a large set of randomly-generated workflows as well as a smaller set of synthetic workflows which are based on real-world workflows used by scientists in different disciplines. Our experiments show that the best solution produced by the heuristics only differs from the optimal value by less than 1% on average.

A tree structure is often used in wireless sensor networks to deliver collected sensor data to a sink node. Such a tree can be built using directional antennas as they offer considerable advantage over the omni-directional ones. A tree is adequate for data gathering from all sensor nodes as long as no node in the tree fails. Since the connectivity of the tree is one, failure of any one node disconnects the tree and may disable the sink node from collecting data from some of the sensor nodes. In this paper we study the problem of enhancing the fault tolerance capability of a data gathering tree by adding a few additional links so that the failure of any one sensor would not disconnect the tree. Assuming that the addition of each link to the tree involves some cost, we study the problem of least-cost augmentation of the tree, so that even after failure of a single node, all the surviving nodes will remain connected to the sink node. We prove that the least-cost tree augmentation problem is NP-complete. Moreover, we provide an approximation algorithm with performance bound of two. The experimental evaluations of the algorithm demonstrate that the approximation algorithm performs even better in practice and almost always produces near-optimal solution. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

Brain Cortical surface registration is required for inter-subject studies of functional and anatomical data. Harmonic mapping has been applied for brain mapping, due to its existence, uniqueness, regularity and numerical stability. In order to improve the registration accuracy, sculcal landmarks are usually used as constraints for brain registration. Unfortunately, constrained harmonic mappings may not be diffeomorphic and produces invalid registration. This work conquer this problem by changing the Riemannian metric on the target cortical surface to a hyperbolic metric, so that the harmonic mapping is guaranteed to be a diffeomorphism while the landmark constraints are enforced as boundary matching condition. The computational algorithms are based on the Ricci flow method and hyperbolic heat diffusion. Experimental results demonstrate that, by changing the Riemannian metric, the registrations are always diffeomorphic, with higher qualities in terms of landmark alignment, curvature matching, area distortion and overlapping of region of interests. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Clustering mechanism for electric tomography imaging

Electrical tomography(ET) imaging,developed in the 1980s,has attracted much industrial and research attentions owing to its low cost,quick response,lack of radiation exposure,and non-intrusiveness compared to other tomography ***,to date applications thereof have been limited owing to its low imaging *** issue with space resolution in existing ET imaging reconstruction methods is that they employ a mathematical approach based on an ill-posed equation with inconsistent *** this paper,we propose a novel ET imaging method based on a data-driven *** recovering the cluster structures hidden in the ET imaging process followed by the application of a fuzzy clustering algorithm to identify the cluster structures,there is no need to study the ill-posed mathematical *** proposed method has been tested by means of three experiments,including image reconstructions of a human lung image and plastic rode shape,as well as two simulations executed on the Comsol *** results show that the proposed method can reconstruct ET images with much higher space resolution more quickly than the existing algorithms.

Efficient construction of provably secure steganography under ordinary covert channels

Steganography is the science of hiding information within seemingly harmless messages or innocent *** paper addresses the problems of efficient construction of secure steganography in ordinary covert *** relying on any sampling assumption,we provide a general construction of secure steganography under computational *** results show that unpredictability of mapping function in covertext sampler is indispensable for secure stegosystem on indistinguishability against adaptive chosen hiddentext *** completely prove that computationally secure steganography can be constructed on pseudorandom function and unbiased sampling function under ordinary covert channels,that is,its security is inversely proportional to the sum of errors of these two functions,as well as the legth of *** importantly,our research is not dependent upon pseudorandom ciphertext assumption of cryptosystem or perfect sampling ***,our results are practically useful for construction and analysis of secure stegosystems.
