Mobility pattern of nodes in an airborne mobile network has significant impact on the coverage and connectivity of the network. Although networks with infrastructure may be able to provide a higher level of reliability than networks without infrastructure, in a contested air space, where U.S. forces do not have complete dominance of the air space, such an infrastructure may be infeasible. Such an environment necessitates a creation of completely mobile ad-hoc network by a group of ANPs. Since the movement of an ANP in a contested airspace depends not only on its own intention, but also the action of its adversary, its movement may be completely unpredictable. However, even this mobile ad-hoc network of ANPs with completely unpredictable flight path, should retain some desirable network properties, e.g., the network should remain connected at all times. However, this property can only be achieved if the on board transceivers have sufficient transmission range to ensure a connected network for all times, in spite of completely unpredictable movement pattern of the ANPs. In this paper, we analyze the minimum transmission range necessary to keep the airborne mobile ad-hoc network connected at all times. Assuming a specific variation of random walk as the mobility pattern of the ANPs, we compute the critical transmission range (CTR) to keep the network connected. Since the CTR analysis is asymptotic in nature, we conduct extensive simulation to compute the CTR for a finite number of ANPs. Our analytical results converges with the simulation results as the number of ANPs increases. © 2012 ACM.

Fast thermal maps are a crucial component for many green data center design techniques. However, most state of the art work on thermal mapping ignores critical temporal aspects of thermal behavior and relies on modeling assumptions, such as the steady state assumption, that can reduce their accuracy and cause heat-induced performance throttling when used for task scheduling. These problems have the potential to affect the energy savings projected by such models. This paper introduces a fast thermal modeling technique that captures the transient behavior necessary to improve thermal prediction capability while retaining the fast thermal model required for many green data center design paradigms. This model is compared against Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations (using OpenFOAM) and an open platform framework, namely BlueTool. © 2012 IEEE.

A revolution has occurred over the past hundred years in the variety of products available to improve our personal and professional lives. While new scientific discoveries enabled conceptualization of these products, it has been the innovations in operations that have made these products widely available and affordable to an increasing number of individuals. These innovations have been led by industrial engineering and operations research. In this talk we discuss the major innovations that have led to economic development and improved quality of life and then address the remaining challenges for production systems researchers. While basic procedures such as process mapping and standards are mentioned, focus will be on deterministic and probabilistic, descriptive and prescriptive, mathematical and computational models as well as new paradigms in system design. While these efforts have been highly successful we will look at some of the key technical and socio-technical issues that remain unsolved providing ample challenges and opportunities for production system researchers. © 2012 IFAC.

Feedback related to motor performance is integral to improving the control, timing and coordination of movements. However, motor learning traditionally occurs within a group setting, limiting the quality of instruction and feedback. Even during one-on-one instruction, there are impediments to feedback such as physical separation between trainer and trainee, common in many sports such as snowboarding and swimming. We propose an inexpensive solution for real-time vibrotactile positioning and speed feedback that can complement traditional motor learning, and is compatible with existing vibrotactile motor instructions. We present a psychophysical study that examined participants' initial reactions to feedback stimuli pertaining to position and speed adjustments. Results support the proposed design in terms of both usability and naturalness, and provide insight into participants' conceptualization of feedback signals and feedback for rotational movements. © 2012 ACM.

Cognitive radios (CRs) can dynamically reconfigure their transmission and/or reception parameters. In a cognitive radio ad hoc network (CRAHN) setting, such reconfiguration is challenging due to the lack of centralized control and fixed infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a method to improve the throughput of secondary users (SUs) in a CRAHN by dynamically adapting their sensing and transmission times. First, we conduct a designed experiment on five CR parameters in the ns-2 network simulator with extensions to support CRAHNs. A statistical analysis of the resulting data attributes the contribution of each parameter, and interactions among them, to SU throughput. Based on these results, we propose for each SU to measure its instantaneous throughput and adapt its sensing and transmission times according to the predicted throughput. Simulation results demonstrate that SUs achieve higher throughput by adapting their sensing and transmission times than by using default static values for these parameters. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper examines the importance of trust factors in the development and adoption of internet based cultural information systems. The proposed trust model identifies the relationship between user communication goals and trust parameters from both technical and social perspectives. To this end, it combines uses and gratifications theory as well as the notion of organisational reputation in order to identify the system’s expected behaviour, i.e., what things the system needs to do in order to be trusted by the users, together with a trust modelling methodology in order to explicitly model and analyse trust assumptions. The approach is explained through an example demonstrating how reasoning about trust relationships affects the development of cultural internet-based systems. © 2013 European and Mediterranean Conference on Information systems. For computer-network education, hands-on laboratories are essential in addition to lectures. Existing laboratory solutions are usually expensive to build, configure and maintain, while still lacking reusability, flexibility and scalability. This paper presents a cloud-based virtual laboratory education solution, called V-Lab, where instructors can use an interactive web GUI to configure computer network testbeds based on a set of dedicated virtual computers interconnected through VLAN-based virtual networks. The established virtual network system can be accessed by students via remote access using standard Secure Shell (SSH), Virtual Network computing (VNC), or Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). By using a flexible and re-configurable design, V-Lab greatly reduces the effort needed to establish and maintain a physical laboratory, while providing a secure and reliable environment that encourages students to use the resources based on their own schedule. V-Lab also helps re-design laboratory curriculum to focus on six educational factors, and the survey results show that V-Lab system is easy to use and setup and has satisfactory performance and reliability. It is also indicated that V-Lab helps students understand and solve real-world problems with sufficient laboratory resources and improved efficiency. © 2012 ACM.

3D RRAM arrays are studied at the device- and architecture-levels. The memory cell performance for a horizontal cross-point is shown experimentally to be essentially comparable to vertical pillar-around geometry. Array performances (read/write, energy, and speed) of different 3D architectures are investigated by SPICE simulation, showing horizontal stacked RRAM is superior but suffers from higher bit cost. Adopting a bi-layer pillar electrode structure is demonstrated to enlarge the array size in 3D vertical RRAM. Design guidelines are proposed for the 3D VRRAM: it shows that increasing the number of stacks of VRRAM while keeping the total bits the same, as well as scaling of feature size (F), are critical for reducing RC delay and energy consumption.

We present a Network on Chip (NoC) model with basic support for execution in constrained real-time. Actions for the processing element, switch, network interface, and channel components of NoC are specified in RT-DEVS, an extension of the DEVS formalism for real-time modeling. A desirable simulator must execute the actions defined in each NoC component within finite time periods. Execution of components' actions is supported by introducing a new capability to the DEVS-Suite simulator such that actions can be executed in real-time. The extended simulator can be used to develop, simulate, and evaluate the class of NoC designs that the underlying computing platform can support. NoC simulation can be used to obtain measurements such as system throughput and latency metrics under different communication patterns. This work offers a basis for future research where a NoC simulation can be embedded in a physical environment and thus enable NoC application designs and experimentations. © 2012 ICST.

Location-based social networks (LBSNs) have attracted an increasing number of users in recent years. The availability of geographical and social information of online LBSNs provides an unprecedented opportunity to study the human movement from their socio-spatial behavior, enabling a variety of location-based services. Previous work on LBSNs reported limited improvements from using the social network information for location prediction;as users can check-in at new places, traditional work on location prediction that relies on mining a user's historical trajectories is not designed for this "cold start" problem of predicting new check-ins. In this paper, we propose to utilize the social network information for solving the "cold start" location prediction problem, with a geo-social correlation model to capture social correlations on LBSNs considering social networks and geographical distance. The experimental results on a real-world LBSN demonstrate that our approach properly models the social correlations of a user's new check-ins by considering various correlation strengths and correlation measures. © 2012 ACM.
