Recent years have seen an exponential increase in the number of users of social media sites. As the number of users of these sites continues to grow at an extraordinary rate, the amount of data produced follows in magnitude. With this deluge of social media data, the need for comprehensive tools to analyze user interactions is ever increasing. In this paper, we present a novel tool, Navigating Information Facets on Twitter (NIF-T), which helps users to explore data generated on social media sites. Using the three dimensions or facets: time, location, and topic as an example of the many possible facets, we enable the users to explore large social media datasets. With the help of a large corpus of tweets collected from the Occupy Wall Street movement on the Twitter platform we show how our system can be used to identify important aspects of the event along these facets. © 2012 ACM.

In this paper, we study the unit-commitment problem in which the demand at each time unit is uncertain, due to weather conditions and economic situation. Instead, the demand is within an uncertainty set. We develop a two-stage robust integer programming formulation for the problem, and provide a tractable solution approach that includes an efficient separation algorithm to solve the problem. The computational experiments show the effectiveness of our approach.

Scheduling access to a shared channel in mobile ad hoc networks must address numerous competing requirements, for example on throughput, delay, and fairness. It must address disparate and dynamic traffic demands as well as losses due to collisions with neighbouring transmitters. It must address changes in the topology of the network that arise from mobility. Topology transparent scheduling schemes have been proposed as a means to support reasonable delay guarantees, minimum throughput guarantees, and to a lesser extent fairness concerns. Sequences based on codes and combinatorial designs have been explored that support topology transparent scheduling for mobile ad hoc networks. However, all of the schemes proposed provide every node with the same (or essentially the same) channel access, by assigning each node a transmission frame in which the number of transmission slots ('weight') is the same. In order to mitigate effects of losses due to collision, it is important to limit the set of frame schedules that are permitted;but at the same time, using frames with differing weights can improve throughput without sacrificing fairness. Combinatorial requirements for variable weight frame schedules are determined based on these observations. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

We report a microfluidic-based Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) biosensor for rapid, real-time detection of Thyroglobulin (Tg, a sensitive indicator of persistent or recurrent differentiated thyroid cancer with abnormal concentration higher than 3 ng/mL in undiluted human serum, using competitive adsorption of proteins and pattern recognition. The SPR biosensor produces unique patterns from multiple engineered sensing surfaces, and then Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) is used to differentiate these patterns. The microfluidic-based biosensor demonstrates the ability to detect 2 ng/mL Tg in undiluted serum with 91.7 % and 90.0 % classification confidence level for its sensitivity and selectivity, respectively. © 2012 TRF.

We consider the problem of learning incoherent sparse and low-rank patterns from multiple tasks. Our approach is based on a linear multitask learning formulation, in which the sparse and low-rank patterns are induced by a cardinality regularization term and a low-rank constraint, respectively. This formulation is nonconvex;we convert it into its convex surrogate, which can be routinely solved via semidefinite programming for small-size problems. We propose employing the general projected gradient scheme to efficiently solve such a convex surrogate;however, in the optimization formulation, the objective function is nondifferentiable and the feasible domain is nontrivial. We present the procedures for computing the projected gradient and ensuring the global convergence of the projected gradient scheme. The computation of the projected gradient involves a constrained optimization problem;we show that the optimal solution to such a problem can be obtained via solving an unconstrained optimization subproblem and a Euclidean projection subproblem. We also present two projected gradient algorithms and analyze their rates of convergence in detail. In addition, we illustrate the use of the presented projected gradient algorithms for the proposed multitask learning formulation using the least squares loss. Experimental results on a collection of real-world data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed multitask learning formulation and the efficiency of the proposed projected gradient algorithms. © 2012 ACM.

Implementing requirements verified body worn medical sensors and smart phones, acting as base stations, in Body Sensor Networks (BSNs), is of extreme importance for development of reliable pervasive health monitoring systems (PHMS). Models of BSNs have been used to analyze designs with respect to requirements such as energy consumption, lifetime, and network reliability under dynamic context changes due to user mobility. This paper proposes Health-Dev that takes a high level specification of requirements verified BSN design and automatically generates both the sensor and smart phone code. Case studies related to energy efficiency and mobility aware network reliability show whether the resulting implementation satisfies the requirements set forth in the design phase. © 2012 IEEE.

As cloud services need a fair pricing for both service providers and customers. If the price is too high, the customer may not use it, if the price is too low, service providers have less incentive to develop services. This paper proposes a novel pricing framework for cloud services using game theory (Cournot Duopoly, Cartel, and Stackelberg models) and data mining techniques (clustering and classification, e.g., SVM (Support Vector Machine)) to determine optimal prices for cloud services. The framework is dynamic because the price is determined based on recent usage data and available resources, it is also intelligent as it takes into various economic models into consideration, it is benign because it considers two conflicting parties, service providers and consumers, into consideration at the same time, and it is customizable based on various pricing strategies proposed by service providers and usage patterns as exhibited by consumers. Linear regression is used in various game theory models to determine the optimal price. A global pricing union (GPU) framework is proposed to achieve the best practice of game theory models. Based on the proposed technique, this paper applies this pricing framework to a case study in cloud services, and demonstrates that the prices obtained meet the requirement of traditional supply-demand analysis. In other words, the price obtained is good enough. © 2012 IEEE.

With Internet environment is getting optimized and users preferring mobile communications, Cloud Service Providers (CSP) aim to provide services to users depending on their geographic locations with higher service availability and faster access speed. Mobile cloud computing falls into this category, where mobile users can move around and request cloud services at any given geographic locations. To build such a geographic-based mobile cloud services, an effective mobile cloud resource allocation and service request scheduling scheme is highly desired. To this end, the presented service request scheduling scheme takes a comprehensive approach by considering system parameters from both CSP and mobile users such as computation, energy, connectivity, service payment, mobile users' satisfaction, etc. Finally, the performance evaluation of the proposed scheduling scheme is evaluated through simulations where the results show that the presented scheme achieves better system overall gain compared to traditional over-provisioning approaches. © 2012 IEEE.

Cloud has become a promising service model for mobile devices. Using cloud services, mobile devices can outsource its computationally intensive operations to the cloud, such as searching, data mining, and multimedia processing. In this service computing model, how to build an economic service provisioning scheme is critical for mobile cloud service providers. Particularly when the mobile cloud resource is restricted. In this paper, we present an economic mobile cloud computing model using Semi-Markov decision Process for mobile cloud resource allocation. Our model takes the considerations the cloud computing capacity, the overall cloud system gain, and expenses of mobile users using cloud services. Based on the best of our knowledge, our presented model is the first to address the economic service provisioning for mobile cloud services. In the performance evaluation, we showed that the presented economic mobile cloud computing model can produce the optimal system gain with a given cloud service inter-domain transfer probability. © Institute for Computer Sciences, Social informatics and Telecommunications engineering 2012.

Computer models play an increasingly important role in engineering design and in the study of complex systems, where physical experiments on the real system or even a prototype are prohibitively expensive. Both deterministic and stochastic computer models are used in these situations. A deterministic computer model is a set of complex equations whose solution depends on the input conditions and the levels of design factors or parameters but not on random elements. Examples include finite element models and computational fluid dynamics models. Spacefilling designs are usually employed to study these deterministic computer models and often the modeling strategy involves fitting a spatial correlation or Kriging model (the Gaussian stochastic process model) to the data, because this model interpolates the experimental data *** provide a survey of these designs and the modeling strategy, and propose a new type of hybrid space-filling design. The new design is a hybrid consisting of design points from a traditional space-filling design augmented by runs from a near saturated I-optimal design for a polynomial. We illustrate the construction of these designs with examples, and demonstrate their performance in response prediction for several situations. A comparison with standard space-filling designs is provided. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.
