Light field visualization commonly provides a single content over the entire field of view. However, the angularly-selective nature of the technology enables the simultaneous visualization of different contents at different viewing angles. Yet segmenting the valid viewing area comes with content interference as well in forms of separation zones, resulting invalid viewing domains. In this paper, we introduce a study on the separation zone of split-domain light field visualization. We created a static-content-based scenario in which we split the valid viewing area into two distinct domains, with a separation zone in between them. This was achieved by merging two light field contents in the middle with an instantaneous switch. The resulting visualization on a light field display was captured by a DSLR camera from two viewing distances, and it was compared to the crosstalk effect caused by insufficient angular resolution.

In the era of global digitalization, digital innovation hubs have become essential, as they function as transforming forces. In this paper, we provide an analysis of the Montenegrin Academic Digital Innovation Hub by applying multi-criteria qualitative evaluation over several criteria: process flow of fully digitized operations of the Hub (with aspects of the innovation life-cycle, ethics, and security), resource management, strategic goals, and feasibility. The paper also proposes a model of comprehensive resource management via the perspective of smart specialization priorities of Montenegro. © 2023 IEEE.

Social Science Is Necessary for Operationalizing Socially Responsible Foundation Models

With the rise of foundation models, there is growing concern about their potential social impacts. Social science has a long history of studying the social impacts of transformative technologies in terms of pre-existing systems of power and how these systems are disrupted or reinforced by new technologies. In this position paper, we build on prior work studying the social impacts of earlier technologies to propose a conceptual framework studying foundation models as sociotechnical systems, incorporating social science expertise to better understand how these models affect systems of power, anticipate the impacts of deploying these models in various applications, and study the effectiveness of technical interventions intended to mitigate social harms. We advocate for an interdisciplinary and collaborative research paradigm between AI and social science across all stages of foundation model research and development to promote socially responsible research practices and use cases, and outline several strategies to facilitate such research. With the advancement of information technology in the recent decades, digital and online services have become essential components of everyday life in Europe. Montenegro is no different in this regard. However, as digital literacy in the country is still in a developing phase in comparison with most countries of the EU, a higher portion of its citizens may rely on assistive technical communication. In this paper, we provide a case study on the assistive technical communication of Montenegrin eServices. The work addresses the sectors of online banking, healthcare services, higher education, national administrative services, and utilities. Our findings highlight the diversity in terms of implemented assistive technical communication, and distinguish usage contexts on the level of adequacy. Yet as the functionalities of Montenegrin eServices are expected to gradually expand in the upcoming years, assistive technical communication must aim to handle the higher extents of service complexity. © 2023 IEEE.

Learning in robotic systems is largely constrained by the quality of the training data available to a robot learner. Robots may have to make multiple, repeated expensive excursions to gather this data or have humans in the loop to perform demonstrations to ensure reliable performance. The cost can be much higher when a robot embedded within a multi-robot system must learn from the complex aggregate of the many robots that surround it and may react to the learner's motions. In our previous work [1], [2], we considered the problem of Remote Teammate Localization (ReTLo), where a single robot in a team uses passive observations of a nearby neighbor to accurately infer the position of robots outside of its sensory range even when robot-to-robot communication is not allowed in the system. We demonstrated a communication-free approach to show that the rearmost robot can use motion information of a single robot within its sensory range to predict the positions of all robots in the convoy. Here, we expand on that work with Selective Random Sampling (SRS), a framework that improves the ReTLo learning process by enabling the learner to actively deviate from its trajectory in ways that are likely to lead to better training samples and consequently gain accurate localization ability with fewer observations. By adding diversity to the learner's motion, SRS simultaneously improves the learner's predictions of all other teammates and thus can achieve similar performance as prior methods with less data.

This technical note presents proof of the convergence of the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) for addressing the sharing problem when applied in conjunction with two algorithms: 1) the stochastic STEP-GP algorithm and 2) its variant named LGP, which includes adaptive uniform quantization. For the case using LGP, the coordinator can assign different quantization resolutions at each iteration and we assume that the number of bits that can be assigned is unrestricted and can go to infinity. This document describes and analyzes the two methods for integrating learning and uniform quantization into the ADMM to reduce its communication overhead and a general formulation of their communication decision method. We present a study looking at the effect of a priori domain knowledge on an EA fitness function. Our experiment has two aims: (1) applying an existing NSGA-II framework for GP with PDL to the cartpole problem—applying GP & PDL to cartpole and a purely behavioral problem for the first time—and (2) contrasting two multi-objective fitness functions: one with high and the other with low a priori domain knowledge. In our experiment we created two populations with an EA, varying in the number of objectives use for the fitness function, 2 objective criteria to represent low a priori knowledge and 3 to represent high. With fitness functions tailored to find specifically prescribed solutions we expect greater discriminating power and more feedback to an evolutionary process. This comes at the cost of excluding some unexpected solutions from the evolutionary process and placing a greater burden on the designer. We address the question: how large is the disadvantage for the low a priori fitness function in a worst-case scenario, where innovative solutions will not enhance performance. This question is interesting because we would prefer to guide EA with simple, easy to create and understand, objective criteria rather than complex and highly specific criteria. Understanding any associated penalty for using simple, easy to create fitness functions, is crucial in assessing how much effort and should be put into designing objective criteria. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In software-defined networks(SDNs),controller placement is a critical factor in the design and planning for the future Internet of Things(IoT),telecommunication,and satellite communication *** research has concentrated largely on factors such as reliability,latency,controller capacity,propagation delay,and energy ***,SDNs are vulnerable to distributed denial of service(DDoS)attacks that interfere with legitimate use of the *** ever-increasing frequency of DDoS attacks has made it necessary to consider them in network design,especially in critical applications such as military,health care,and financial services networks requiring high *** propose a mathematical model for planning the deployment of SDN smart backup controllers(SBCs)to preserve service in the presence of DDoS *** a number of input parameters,our model has two distinct ***,it determines the optimal number of primary controllers to place at specific locations or nodes under normal operating ***,it recommends an optimal number of smart backup controllers for use with different levels of DDoS *** goal of the model is to improve resistance to DDoS attacks while optimizing the overall cost based on the *** simulated results demonstrate that the model is useful in planning for SDN reliability in the presence of DDoS attacks while managing the overall cost.

Network localization strength regulates innovation diffusion with macro-level social influence

Innovation diffusion in the networked population is an essential process that drives the progress of human society. Despite the recent advances in network science, a fundamental understanding of network properties that regulate such processes is still lacking. Focusing on an innovation diffusion model with pairwise transmission and macro-level social influence, i.e., more adopters in the networked population lead to a higher adoption tendency among the remaining individuals, we observe discontinuous phase transitions when the influence is sufficiently strong. Through extensive analyses of a large corpus of empirical networks, we show that the tricritical point depends on the network localization strength, which our newly proposed metric can effectively quantify. The metric reveals the deep connection between the critical and tricritical points and further indicates a trade-off: networks that allow less attractive products to prevail tend to yield slower diffusion and lower market penetration and verse versa. Guided by this trade-off, we demonstrate how marketers can rewire the networks to modulate product diffusion according to their needs. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Measuring Spatio-Temporal Civil War Dimensions Using Community-Based Dynamic Network Representation (CoDNet)

Civil war exhibits complex geospatial trends over time, which may be missed by models that rely on count-based operationalizations. Here, the spatial and temporal correlation values of monthly civil war events are transformed into their influence degree symbol, which measures geospatial concentration, spread, and intensity of civil war. We then measure variation in these degrees over time to identify relevant spatio-temporal civil war aspects. The network model is constructed using 0.5 degree grid locations as nodes, counting nearby and over time connections. We then extract the temporal community structure behind the data. We use ground truth data to visualize how our measures correlate with observed patterns, thereby illustrating our method provides accurate depictions of geospatial civil war dynamics. We also evaluate the impact of several indicators highlighted by past research and our community-based spatio-temporal measures and comparing it to the preprocessed count indicator. Our findings indicate that the relationship between state capacity and climate stress show opposite correlations with civil war as those identified by studies that use count based indicators. Counterintuitively, our results show that conflict intensifies and spreads in locations where the state is stronger and where climate conditions are improved. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.
