We develop a framework based on the deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) for model-free prediction of the occurrence of extreme events both in time (“when”) and in space (“where”) in nonlinear physical systems of spatial dimension two. The measurements or data are a set of two-dimensional snapshots or images. For a desired time horizon of prediction, a proper labeling scheme can be designated to enable successful training of the DCNN and subsequent prediction of extreme events in time. Given that an extreme event has been predicted to occur within the time horizon, a space-based labeling scheme can be applied to predict, within certain resolution, the location at which the event will occur. We use synthetic data from the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation and empirical wind speed data from the North Atlantic Ocean to demonstrate and validate our machine-learning-based prediction framework. The trade-offs among the prediction horizon, spatial resolution, and accuracy are illustrated, and the detrimental effect of spatially biased occurrence of extreme events on prediction accuracy is discussed. The deep learning framework is viable for predicting extreme events in the real world.

Automatic disease diagnosis has become increasingly valuable in clinical practice. The advent of large language models (LLMs) has catalyzed a paradigm shift in artificial intelligence, with growing evidence supporting the efficacy of LLMs in diagnostic tasks. Despite the growing attention in this field, many critical research questions remain under-explored. For instance, what diseases and LLM techniques have been investigated for diagnostic tasks? How can suitable LLM techniques and evaluation methods be selected for clinical decision-making? To answer these questions, we performed a comprehensive analysis of LLM-based methods for disease diagnosis. This scoping review examined the types of diseases, associated organ systems, relevant clinical data, LLM techniques, and evaluation methods reported in existing studies. Furthermore, we offered guidelines for data preprocessing and the selection of appropriate LLM techniques and evaluation strategies for diagnostic tasks. We also assessed the limitations of current research and delineated the challenges and future directions in this research field. In summary, our review outlined a blueprint for LLM-based disease diagnosis, helping to streamline and guide future research endeavors. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Due to their essential role as places for socialization, "third places1"—social places where people casually visit and communicate with friends and neighbors—have been studied by a wide range of fields including network science, sociology, geography, urban planning, and regional studies. However, the lack of a large-scale census on third places kept researchers from systematic investigations. Here we provide a systematic nationwide investigation of third places and their social networks, by using Facebook pages. Our analysis reveals a large degree of geographic heterogeneity in the distribution of the types of third places, which is highly correlated with baseline demographics and county characteristics. Certain types of pages like "Places of Worship" demonstrate a large degree of clustering suggesting community preference or potential complementarities to concentration. We also found that the social networks of different types of social place differ in important ways: The social networks of ‘Restaurants’ and ‘Indoor Recreation’ pages are more likely to be tight-knit communities of pre-existing friendships whereas ‘Places of Worship’ and ‘Community Amenities’ page categories are more likely to bridge new friendship ties. We believe that this study can serve as an important milestone for future studies on the systematic comparative study of social spaces and their social relationships. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. The Great Salt Lake of Utah (US) is of great economic, cultural, and spiritual importance, yet rapid depletion of the lake in recent decades gravely threatens these values. The lake's shrinkage is attributable to anthropogenic consumption of 62% of river water that would have otherwise reached and replenished the lake. The lake's water balance has been in deficit for much of the past century, but during recent decades climate warming and drought has reduced basin runoff, while anthropogenic water consumption has not been reduced to a commensurate degree, driving the lake's water budget further into deficit condition and causing an average lake level decline of 0.1 meter/year during 1989−2022. Agriculture accounts for 71% of anthropogenic depletions, with 80% of agricultural water going to cattle-feed crops (alfalfa and grass hay) to support ∼980,000 head of cattle for dairy and beef production. We propose a target goal of reducing total anthropogenic consumption by 35% to stabilize and begin refilling the lake, and explore potential policy solutions for attaining this conservation goal. We find that the most potent solutions would involve a 61% reduction in alfalfa production along with fallowing of 26–55% of grass hay production, resulting in reductions of agricultural revenues of US$97 million per year, or 0.04% of the state's GDP. Farmers and ranchers involved in cattle-feed production, along with related agricultural businesses, could be fully compensated for lost revenue generation at a cost ranging from US$29-$124 per Utah resident each year, depending upon which water conservation strategies are deployed. Dairies dependent upon alfalfa produced in the Great Salt Lake basin would need to increase imports of these crops from other river basins to sustain production at current levels. This case study of a water-stressed basin with dominant agricultural water use illustrates globally transferable approaches for rebalancing the water budget of stressed water basin

Human visual cortex is organized into several functional re-gions/areas. Identifying these visual areas of the human brain (i.e., V1, V2, V4, etc) is an important topic in neurophysiology and vision science. Retinotopic mapping via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) provides a noninvasive way of defining the boundaries of the visual areas. It is well known from neurophysiology studies that retino-topic mapping is diffeomorphic within each local area (i.e. locally smooth, differentiable, and invertible). However, due to the low signal-noise ratio of fMRI, the retinotopic maps from fMRI are often not diffeomorphic, making it difficult to delineate the boundaries of visual areas. The purpose of this work is to generate diffeomorphic retinotopic maps and improve the accuracy of the retinotopic atlas from fMRI measurements through the development of a specifically designed registration procedure. Although there are sophisticated existing cortical surface registration methods, most of them cannot fully utilize the features of retinotopic mapping. By considering unique retinotopic mapping features, we form a qua-siconformal geometry-based registration model and solve it with efficient numerical methods. We compare our registration with several popular methods on synthetic data. The results demonstrate that the proposed registration is superior to conventional methods for the registration of retinotopic maps. The application of our method to a real retinotopic mapping dataset also results in much smaller registration errors.

Explaining Vulnerabilities to Adversarial Machine Learning through Visual Analytics

Machine learning models are currently being deployed in a variety of real-world applications where model predictions are used to make decisions about healthcare, bank loans, and numerous other critical tasks. As the deployment of artificial intelligence technologies becomes ubiquitous, it is unsurprising that adversaries have begun developing methods to manipulate machine learning models to their advantage. While the visual analytics community has developed methods for opening the black box of machine learning models, little work has focused on helping the user understand their model vulnerabilities in the context of adversarial attacks. In this paper, we present a visual analytics framework for explaining and exploring model vulnerabilities to adversarial attacks. Our framework employs a multi-faceted visualization scheme designed to support the analysis of data poisoning attacks from the perspective of models, data instances, features, and local structures. We demonstrate our framework through two case studies on binary classifiers and illustrate model vulnerabilities with respect to varying attack strategies. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. This paper reports on the NTIRE 2023 Quality Assessment of Video Enhancement Challenge, which will be held in conjunction with the New Trends in Image Restoration and Enhancement Workshop (NTIRE) at CVPR 2023. This challenge is to address a major challenge in the field of video processing, namely, video quality assessment (VQA) for enhanced videos. The challenge uses the VQA Dataset for Perceptual Video Enhancement (VDPVE), which has a total of 1211 enhanced videos, including 600 videos with color, brightness, and contrast enhancements, 310 videos with deblurring, and 301 deshaked videos. The challenge has a total of 167 registered participants. 61 participating teams submitted their prediction results during the development phase, with a total of 3168 submissions. A total of 176 submissions were submitted by 37 participating teams during the final testing phase. Finally, 19 participating teams submitted their models and fact sheets, and detailed the methods they used. Some methods have achieved better results than baseline methods, and the winning methods have demonstrated superior prediction performance. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we derive the asymptotic Cramér-Rao lower bound for the continuous-time output error model structure and provide an analysis of the statistical efficiency of the Simplified Refined Instrumental Variable method for Continuous-time systems (SRIVC) based on sampled data. It is shown that the asymptotic Cramér-Rao lower bound is independent of the intersample behaviour of the noise-free system output and hence only depends on the intersample behaviour of the system input. We have also shown that, at the converging point of the SRIVC algorithm, the estimates do not depend on the intersample behaviour of the measured output. It is then proven that the SRIVC estimator is asymptotically efficient for the output error model structure under mild conditions. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to verify the asymptotic Cramér-Rao lower bound and the asymptotic covariance of the SRIVC estimates. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Humans acquire and accumulate knowledge through language usage and eagerly exchange their knowledge for advancement. Although geographical barriers had previously limited communication, the emergence of information technology has opened new avenues for knowledge exchange. However, it is unclear which communication pathway is dominant in the 21st century. Here, we explore the dominant path of knowledge diffusion in the 21st century using Wikipedia, the largest communal dataset. We evaluate the similarity of shared knowledge between population groups, distinguished based on their language usage. When population groups are more engaged with each other, their knowledge structure is more similar, where engagement is indicated by socioeconomic connections, such as cultural, linguistic, and historical features. Moreover, geographical proximity is no longer a critical requirement for knowledge dissemination. Furthermore, we integrate our data into a mechanistic model to better understand the underlying mechanism and suggest that the knowledge "Silk Road" of the 21st century is based online. © 2022, CC BY.
