AKM2D : An adaptive framework for online sensing and anomaly quantification

In point-based sensing systems such as coordinate measuring machines (CMM) and laser ultrasonics where complete sensing is impractical due to the high sensing time and cost, adaptive sensing through a systematic exploration is vital for online inspection and anomaly quantification. Most of the existing sequential sampling methodologies focus on reducing the overall fitting error for the entire sampling space. However, in many anomaly quantification applications, the main goal is to estimate sparse anomalous regions in the pixel-level accurately. In this paper, we develop a novel framework named Adaptive Kernelized Maximum-Minimum Distance (AKM2D) to speed up the inspection and anomaly detection process through an intelligent sequential sampling scheme integrated with fast estimation and detection. The proposed method balances the sampling efforts between the space-filling sampling (exploration) and focused sampling near the anomalous region (exploitation). The proposed methodology is validated by conducting simulations and a case study of anomaly detection in composite sheets using a guided wave test. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. Sparse representation has been widely applied to multi-focus image fusion in recent years. As a key step, the construction of an informative dictionary directly decides the performance of sparsity-based image fusion. To obtain sufficient bases for dictionary learning, different geometric information of source images is extracted and analysed. The classified image bases are used to build corresponding subdictionaries by principle component analysis. All built subdictionaries are merged into one informative dictionary. Based on constructed dictionary, compressive sampling matched pursuit algorithm is used to extract corresponding sparse coefficients for the representation of source images. The obtained sparse coefficients are fused by Max-L1 fusion rule first, and then inverted to form the final fused image. Multiple comparative experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is competitive with other the state-of-the-art fusion methods.

Requirements-driven test generation for autonomous vehicles with machine learning components

Autonomous vehicles are complex systems that are challenging to test and debug. A requirements-driven approach to the development process can decrease the resources required to design and test these systems, while simultaneously increasing the reliability. We present a testing framework that uses signal temporal logic (STL), which is a precise and unambiguous requirements language. Our framework evaluates test cases against the STL formulae and additionally uses the requirements to automatically discover test cases that fail to satisfy the requirements. One of the key features of our tool is the support for machine learning (ML) components in the system design, such as deep neural networks. The framework allows evaluation of the control algorithms, including the ML components, and it also includes models of CCD camera, lidar, and radar sensors, as well as the vehicle environment. We use multiple methods to generate test cases, including covering arrays, which is an efficient method to search discrete variable spaces. The resulting test cases can be used to debug the controller design by identifying controller behaviors that do not satisfy requirements. The test cases can also enhance the testing phase of development by identifying critical corner cases that correspond to the limits of the system's allowed behaviors. We present STL requirements for an autonomous vehicle system, which capture both component-level and system-level behaviors. Additionally, we present three driving scenarios and demonstrate how our requirements-driven testing framework can be used to identify critical system behaviors, which can be used to support the development process. A Computational Model of Early Word Learning from the Infant’s Point of View

Human infants have the remarkable ability to learn the associations between object names and visual objects from inherently ambiguous experiences. Researchers in cognitive science and developmental psychology have built formal models that implement in-principle learning algorithms, and then used preselected and pre-cleaned datasets to test the abilities of the models to find statistical regularities in the input data. In contrast to previous modeling approaches, the present study used egocentric video and gaze data collected from infant learners during natural toy play with their parents. This allowed us to capture the learning environment from the perspective of the learner’s own point of view. We then used a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model to process sensory data from the infant’s point of view and learn name-object associations from scratch. As the first model that takes raw egocentric video to simulate infant word learning, the present study provides a proof of principle that the problem of early word learning can be solved, using actual visual data perceived by infant learners. Moreover, we conducted simulation experiments to systematically determine how visual, perceptual, and attentional properties of infants’ sensory experiences may affect word learning. Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT) is an FDA approved treatment for recurrent Clostridium difficile infections, and is being explored for other clinical applications, from alleviating digestive and neurological disorders, to priming the microbiome for cancer treatment, and restoring microbiomes impacted by cancer treatment. Quantifying the extent of engraftment following an FMT is important in determining if a recipient didn’t respond because the engrafted microbiome didn’t produce the desired outcomes (a successful FMT, but negative treatment outcome), or the microbiome didn’t engraft (an unsuccessful FMT and negative treatment outcome). The lack of a consistent methodology for quantifying FMT engraftment extent hinders the assessment of FMT success and its relation to clinical outcomes, and presents challenges for comparing FMT results and protocols across studies. Here we review 46 studies of FMT in humans and model organisms and group their approaches for assessing the extent to which an FMT engrafts into three criteria: 1) Chimeric Asymmetric Community Coalescence investigates microbiome shifts following FMT engraftment using methods such as alpha diversity comparisons, beta diversity comparisons, and microbiome source tracking. 2) Donated Microbiome Indicator Features tracks donated microbiome features (e.g., amplicon sequence variants or species of interest) as a signal of engraftment with methods such as differential abundance testing based on the current sample collection, or tracking changes in feature abundances that have been previously identified (e.g., from FMT or disease-relevant literature). 3) Temporal Stability examines how resistant post-FMT recipient’s microbiomes are to reverting back to their baseline microbiome. Individually, these criteria each highlight a critical aspect of microbiome engraftment;investigated together, however, they provide a clearer assessment of microbiome engraftment. The COVID-19 pandemic is a global crisis that has been testing every society and exposing the critical role of local politics in crisis response. In the United States, there has been a strong partisan divide between the Democratic and Republican party's narratives about the pandemic which resulted in polarization of individual behaviors and divergent policy adoption across regions. As shown in this case, as well as in most major social issues, strongly polarized narrative frameworks facilitate such narratives. To understand polarization and other social chasms, it is critical to dissect these diverging narratives. Here, taking the Democratic and Republican political social media posts about the pandemic as a case study, we demonstrate that a combination of computational methods can provide useful insights into the different contexts, framing, and characters and relationships that construct their narrative frameworks which individual posts source from. Leveraging a dataset of tweets from the politicians in the U.S., including the ex-president, members of Congress, and state governors, we found that the Democrats' narrative tends to be more concerned with the pandemic as well as financial and social support, while the Republicans discuss more about other political entities such as China. We then perform an automatic framing analysis to characterize the ways in which they frame their narratives, where we found that the Democrats emphasize the government's role in responding to the pandemic, and the Republicans emphasize the roles of individuals and support for small businesses. Finally, we present a semantic role analysis that uncovers the important characters and relationships in their narratives as well as how they facilitate a membership categorization process. Our findings concretely expose the gaps in the "elusive consensus" between the two parties. Our methodologies may be applied to computationally study narratives in various domains. Biology is both an important application area and a source of motivation for development of advanced machine learning techniques. Although much attention has been paid to large and complex data sets resulting from high-throughput sequencing, advances in high-quality video recording technology have begun to generate similarly rich data sets requiring sophisticated techniques from both computer vision and time-series analysis. Moreover, just as studying gene expression patterns in one organism can reveal general principles that apply to other organisms, the study of complex social interactions in an experimentally tractable model system, such as a laboratory ant colony, can provide general principles about the dynamics of other social groups. Here, we focus on one such example from the study of reproductive regulation in small laboratory colonies of more than 50 Harpegnathos ants. These ants can be artificially induced to begin a ∼20 day process of hierarchy reformation. Although the conclusion of this process is conspicuous to a human observer, it remains unclear which behaviors during the transient period are contributing to the process. To address this issue, we explore the potential application of One-class Classification (OC) to the detection of abnormal states in ant colonies for which behavioral data is only available for the normal societal conditions during training. Specifically, we build upon the Deep Support Vector Data Description (DSVDD) and introduce the Inner-Outlier Generator (IO-GEN) that synthesizes fake "inner outlier" observations during training that are near the center of the DSVDD data description. We show that IO-GEN increases the reliability of the final OC classifier relative to other DSVDD baselines. This method can be used to screen video frames for which additional human observation is needed. Multipath TCP (MPTCP) utilizes multiple paths for simultaneous data transmission to enhance performance. However, existing MPTCP protocols are still far from satisfactory in wireless networks because of their loss-based congestion control and the difficulty of managing multiple subflows. To overcome these problems, we redesign the coupled congestion control algorithm and scheduler to boost MPTCP in wireless heterogeneous networks. The main purpose is to promote transmission rate under lossy networks, while also provide stability when networks suffer physical link changes and asymmetric links. In this paper, inspired by Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip propagation time (BBR), we first propose Coupled BBR that utilizes detected bandwidth to adjust the sending rate within an MPTCP connection. Coupled BBR provides high loss tolerance as well as balanced congestion among MPTCP subflows. Then, to further improve the performance, we propose an Adaptively Redundant and Predictive packet (AR&P) scheduler to improve adaptability and keep in-order packet delivery in highly dynamic network scenarios. Based on Linux kernel implementation and experiments in both testbed and real network scenarios, we show that the proposed scheme not only provides high throughput in wireless networks, but also improves robustness and reduces out-of-order packets in some harsh circumstances. Evaluating reliability of complex systems for Predictive maintenance

Predictive Maintenance (PdM) can only be implemented when the online knowledge of system condition is available, and this has become available with deployment of on-equipment sensors. To date, most studies on predicting the remaining useful lifetime of a system have been focusing on either single-component systems or systems with deterministic reliability structures. This assumption is not applicable on some realistic problems, where there exist uncertainties in reliability structures of complex systems. In this paper, a PdM scheme is developed by employing a Discrete Time Markov Chain (DTMC) for forecasting the health of monitored components and a Bayesian Network (BN) for modeling the multi-component system reliability. Therefore, probabilistic inferences on both the system and its components’ status can be made and PdM can be scheduled on both levels. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.
