Background: systems Medicine is a novel approach to medicine, that is, an interdisciplinary field that considers the human body as a system, composed of multiple parts and of complex relationships at multiple levels, and further integrated into an environment. Exploring systems Medicine implies understanding and combining concepts coming from diametral different fields, including medicine, biology, statistics, modeling and simulation, and data science. Such heterogeneity leads to semantic issues, which may slow down implementation and fruitful interaction between these highly diverse fields. Methods: In this review, we collect and explain more than100 terms related to systems Medicine. These include both modeling and data science terms and basic systems medicine terms, along with some synthetic definitions, examples of applications, and lists of relevant references. Results: This glossary aims at being a first aid kit for the systems Medicine researcher facing an unfamiliar term, where he/she can get a first understanding of them, and, more importantly, examples and references for digging into the topic. © Massimiliano Zanin et al., 2021;Published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. 2021.

Many organizations are developing autonomous driving systems, which are expected to be deployed at a large scale in the near future. Despite this, there is a lack of agreement on appropriate methods to test, debug, and certify the performance of these systems. One of the main challenges is that many autonomous driving systems have machine learning (ML) components, such as deep neural networks, for which formal properties are difficult to characterize. We present a testing framework that is compatible with test case generation and automatic falsification methods, which are used to evaluate cyber-physical systems. We demonstrate how the framework can be used to evaluate closed-loop properties of an autonomous driving system model that includes the ML components, all within a virtual environment. We demonstrate how to use test case generation methods, such as covering arrays, as well as requirement falsification methods to automatically identify problematic test scenarios. The resulting framework can be used to increase the reliability of autonomous driving systems. © 2018 IEEE.

Throughout its history, Operational Research has evolved to include a variety of methods, models and algorithms that have been applied to a diverse and wide range of contexts. This encyclopedic article consists of two main sections: methods and applications. The first aims to summarise the up-to-date knowledge and provide an overview of the state-of-the-art methods and key developments in the various subdomains of the field. The second offers a wide-ranging list of areas where Operational Research has been applied. The article is meant to be read in a nonlinear fashion. It should be used as a point of reference or first-port-of-call for a diverse pool of readers: academics, researchers, students, and practitioners. The entries within the methods and applications sections are presented in alphabetical order. The authors dedicate this paper to the 2023 Turkey/Syria earthquake victims. We sincerely hope that advances in OR will play a role towards minimising the pain and suffering caused by this and future catastrophes. © 2023, CC BY.

The Web-based Programming Grading Assistant (WPGA) supports mass grading paper-based quizzes or exams and provides cross-topic exam analyzation for both students and teachers. The ultimate goal of WPGA is promoting self-regulated and personalized learning. This paper aims to strengthen collaborative learning through supporting interactive visual analysis toward students' exam results. The expected experiment result shows students will gain more learning achievements and interests by comparing themselves with others. The visualization results also support both students and teachers what learning materials should be focused on through adaptive feedback and guidance. This finding shed light on the future research of conducting a collaborative learning process in programming lessons. © PACIS 2018.

Vision processing on traditional architectures is inefficient due to energy-expensive off-chip data movement. Many researchers advocate pushing processing close to the sensor to substantially reduce data movement. However, continuous near-sensor processing raises the sensor temperature, impairing the fidelity of imaging/vision tasks. We characterize the thermal implications of using 3D stacked image sensors with near-sensor vision processing units. Our characterization reveals that near-sensor processing reduces system power but degrades image quality. For reasonable image fidelity, the sensor temperature needs to stay below a threshold, situationally determined by application needs. Fortunately, our characterization also identifies opportunities - unique to the needs of near-sensor processing - to regulate temperature based on dynamic visual task requirements and rapidly increase capture quality on demand. Based on our characterization, we propose and investigate two thermal management strategies - stop-capture-go and seasonal migration - for imaging-aware thermal management. We present parameters that govern the policy decisions and explore the trade-offs between system power and policy overhead. Our evaluation shows that our novel dynamic thermal management strategies can unlock the energy-efficiency potential of near-sensor processing. Efficient network construction through structural plasticity

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) on hardware is facing excessive computation cost due to the massive number of parameters. A typical training pipeline to mitigate overparameterization is to pre-define a DNN structure first with redundant learning units (filters and neurons) under the goal of high accuracy, then to prune redundant learning units after training with the purpose of efficient inference. We argue that it is sub-optimal to introduce redundancy into training for the purpose of reducing redundancy later in inference. Moreover, the fixed network structure further results in poor adaption to dynamic tasks, such as lifelong learning. In contrast, structural plasticity plays an indispensable role in mammalian brains to achieve compact and accurate learning. Throughout the lifetime, active connections are continuously created while those are no longer important are degenerated. Inspired by such observation, we propose a training scheme, namely Continuous Growth and Pruning (CGaP), where we start the training from a small network seed, then literally execute continuous growth by adding important learning units and finally prune secondary ones for efficient inference. The inference model generated from CGaP is sparse in the structure, largely decreasing the inference power and latency when deployed on hardware platforms. With popular DNN structures on representative datasets, the efficacy of CGaP is benchmarked by both algorithm simulation and architectural modeling on Field-programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA). For example, CGaP decreases the FLOPs, model size, DRAM access energy and inference latency by 63.3%, 64.0%, 11.8% and 40.2%, respectively, for ResNet-110 on CIFAR-10. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. Over the past two decades, Web Intelligence (WI) has emerged as a key field driving the evolution of AI in the connected world, addressing the demands of a future intelligent society. This paper provides a comprehensive review of WI’s contributions since its inception in 2000, spanning three distinct phases: Wisdom World Wide Web (WI 1.0, 2000–2009), Wisdom Web of Things (WI 2.0, 2010–2017), and Wisdom Web of Everything (WI 3.0, since 2018). For each phase, we examine key advancements, challenges, and future directions from the perspectives of both intelligent machines and human experts, highlighting significant societal impacts. To advance WI research, we propose a large language model-based learning framework for topic analysis and trend prediction. Moving beyond single-perspective approaches, we emphasize the Connected Intelligence Ecosystem defined by the HIGH5 scheme comprising one goal, two twins, three fundamentals, four functions, and five services that are realized through WI 3.0. This vision serves as a bridge from localized models to a global reference framework for addressing sustainability challenges in future societies. To illustrate the real-world implications of WI 3.0, we present case studies focusing on brain-inspired research, particularly in the intersection of brain intelligence, brain health, and brainternet-fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across diverse research communities. © The Author(s) 2025.

Early and accurate diagnosis of brain tumors is crucial to improving patient outcomes and optimizing treatment strategies. Long-term brain injury results from aberrant proliferation of either malignant or nonmalignant tissues in the brain. MRIs, or magnetic resonance imaging, are one of the most used approaches for detecting brain tumors. Professionals physically evaluate people after they have had MRI filtering, the process of enhancing MRI scans for radiologist interpretation, to establish if they have a brain tumor. Because different specialists use different frames to make judgments on the same MRI image, their analyses may yield contradictory results. Furthermore, simply detecting a tumor is insufficient. Inconsistent diagnoses can lead to delays in treatment, impacting survival rates and quality of care. It is also crucial to diagnose the patient's tumor so that treatment can begin as soon as possible. In this research, we investigate the multi-class classification of brain tumors utilizing a cutting-edge methodology that includes feature extraction from pictures using the DieT Transformer model, dimensionality reduction with PCA, and feature selection using the ADE algorithm. The proposed model, known in the publication as ADE_DieT, obtained an accuracy of 96.09 %. In addition, this article analyzes the performance of various pre-trained models, including MobileNetV3, NasNet, ResNet50, VGG16, VGG19, and DeiT. The proposed approach shortens the time required for manual diagnosis by clinicians by assisting in the rapid and accurate identification of brain tumors using MRI data. In oncology, this is important since it allows for early treatment. Integrating ADE_DieT into clinical workflows can support radiologists by reducing diagnosis time and enhancing diagnostic consistency. © 2024 The Authors

ECG Language Processing (ELP): a New Technique to Analyze ECG Signals

A language is constructed of a finite/infinite set of sentences composing of words. Similar to natural languages, Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal, the most common noninvasive tool to study the functionality of heart and diagnose several abnormal arrhythmia, is made up of sequences of three or four distinct waves including the P-wave, QRS complex, T-wave and U-wave. An ECG signal may contain several different varieties of each wave (e.g., the QRS complex can have various appearances). For this reason, the ECG signal is a sequence of heartbeats similar to sentences in natural languages) and each heartbeat is composed of a set of waves (similar to words in a sentence) of different morphologies. Analogous to natural language processing (NLP) which is used to help computers understand and interpret the human’s natural language, it is possible to develop methods inspired by NLP to aid computers to gain a deeper understanding of Electrocardiogram signals. In this work, our goal is to propose a novel ECG analysis technique, ECG language processing (ELP), focusing on empowering computers to understand ECG signals in a way physicians do. We evaluated the proposed method on two tasks including the classification of heartbeats and the detection of atrial fibrillation in the ECG signals. Experimental results on three databases (i.e., PhysionNet’s MIT-BIH, MIT-BIH AFIB and PhysioNet Challenge 2017 AFIB Dataset databases) reveal that the proposed method is a general idea that can be applied to a variety of biomedical applications and is able to achieve remarkable performance. The progress of complex networks provides new perspective and methods for investigating on the subject "science of science", and relative literature has made a lot of remarkable discoveries. But this research framework is still insufficient with only network topology information of scientific literature and lack of considering true relationships between papers. Thanks to information technology, the distance between two contents can be evaluated by mapping them into a high-dimensional space based on the theme of each paper, which is automatically created by analyzing the abstract of paper via Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). This paper analyzed some data from APS dataset with measures of distances between article pairs. The analysis of the pattern of scholars carrying out their research shows that, most scholars have concentrated rather than extensive research areas. Especially scientists’ new researches are highly relevant to previous studies. Besides, this paper shows the scholar’s citation behavior is not random. The citation behavior is basically concentrated in a limited interval, and the reference preference reaching a maximum at a certain distance. It implies there is a "most proper citation distance". Furthermore, they have a strong preference to cite the academic masters’ articles. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
