Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming scientific research, including proteomics. Advances in mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics data quality, diversity, and scale, combined with groundbreaking AI techniques, are unlocking new challenges and opportunities in biological discovery. Here, we highlight key areas where AI is driving innovation, from data analysis to new biological insights. These include developing an AI-friendly ecosystem for proteomics data generation, sharing, and analysis;improving peptide and protein identification and quantification;characterizing protein-protein interactions and protein complexes;advancing spatial and perturbation proteomics;integrating multi-omics data;and ultimately enabling AI-empowered virtual cells. © 2025, CC BY.

Training neural networks by using power linear units (PoLUs)

In this paper, we introduce "Power Linear Unit" (PoLU) which increases the nonlinearity capacity of a neural network and thus helps improving its performance. PoLU adopts several advantages of previously proposed activation functions. First, the output of PoLU for positive inputs is designed to be identity to avoid the gradient vanishing problem. Second, PoLU has a non-zero output for negative inputs such that the output mean of the units is close to zero, hence reducing the bias shift effect. Thirdly, there is a saturation on the negative part of PoLU, which makes it more noise-robust for negative inputs. Furthermore, we prove that PoLU is able to map more portions of every layer's input to the same space by using the power function and thus increases the number of response regions of the neural network. We use image classification for comparing our proposed activation function with others. In the experiments, MNIST, CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, Street View House Numbers (SVHN) and ImageNet are used as benchmark datasets. The neural networks we implemented include widely-used ELUNetwork, ResNet-50, and VGG16, plus a couple of shallow networks. Modern high-performance processors are embedded in portable electronics, such as smartphones, self-driving automobiles, and augmented reality wearable. These computing platforms provide real-time direction navigation, high definition video entertainment, real-time sensing and control. One of the major performance limiting factors in these platforms is the poorly designed thermal solution to prevent overheating at the processor transistor junction and at the platform surface. The former limits the maximum operating temperature of transistors to guarantee reliability and lifetime whereas the latter limits the maximum platform surface temperature to ensure user ergonomic comfort. To design effective cooling solutions for high-performance, multi-layer, multi-processor platforms, an accurate and detailed platform level temperature model is needed. In this work, we present a detailed finite volume model to predict the temperature behavior of a tightly packaged, high-performance portable platform, from the system level down to the processor architecture level. We first characterize the thermal response of real-world, representative mobile workloads and perform parametric studies to predict the processor junction and platform surface temperature based on the properties of the platform. We observe that thermal hot spots are sensitive to workload computation characteristics. In particular, for mobile workloads, such as web browsing, computations often occur in short time burst, leading to instantaneous power spikes. This results in temperature spikes as thermal hot spots. To mitigate the thermal issue, modern systems implement dynamic voltage and frequency scaling during high performance and high power scenario to prevent cores from overheating. We validate the proposed temperature model used to predict the maximum temperature at the processor chip and at the platform surface, with measurements from the embedded temperature sensors and an infrared camera. Explicit reasoning over end-to-end neural architectures for visual question answering

Many vision and language tasks require commonsense reasoning beyond data-driven image and natural language processing. Here we adopt Visual Question Answering (VQA) as an example task, where a system is expected to answer a question in natural language about an image. Current state-of-the-art systems attempted to solve the task using deep neural architectures and achieved promising performance. However, the resulting systems are generally opaque and they struggle in understanding questions for which extra knowledge is required. In this paper, we present an explicit reasoning layer on top of a set of penultimate neural network based systems. The reasoning layer enables reasoning and answering questions where additional knowledge is required, and at the same time provides an interpretable interface to the end users. Specifically, the reasoning layer adopts a Probabilistic Soft Logic (PSL) based engine to reason over a basket of inputs: visual relations, the semantic parse of the question, and background ontological knowledge from word2vec and Con-ceptNet. With the development of the urbanization, the impact of urban heat island effect is becoming more and more severe. It is difficult to reveal the evolution of heat island dynamics based on statistical data, while the application of remote sensing data provides an effective method. Beijing City as study area, this paper analyzes the dynamics of summer land surface temperature in Beijing from 2005 to 2015, and reveals the significant urban heat island effect in Beijing based on the evolution law of land surface temperature along urban-rural gradient. After that, the dynamic evolution of urban heat island extent and its influence factors are explored in Beijing. The results show that the summer land surface temperature of Beijing in the past ten years shows an increasing trend, the land surface temperature gradually increases on the urban-rural gradient, indicating an obvious heat island effect. Meanwhile, the extent of urban heat island has expanded rapidly in the past ten years. On the township scale, building area, population and GDP all have significant positive effects on the land surface temperature while on the district scale, these correlations are not significant. This paper reveals the evolution law of urban heat island effect and its influencing factors in Beijing, which has a certain reference significance for the rational planning of urban space.

Categorization is an essential component for us to understand the world for ourselves and to communicate it collectively. It is therefore important to recognize that classification systems is not necessarily static, especially for economic systems, and even more so in urban areas where most innovation takes place and is implemented. Out-of-date classification systems would potentially limit further understanding of the current economy because things constantly change. Here, we develop an occupation-based classification system for the US labor economy, called industrial topics, that satisfy adaptability and representability. By leveraging the distributions of occupations across the US urban areas, we identify industrial topics — clusters of occupations based on their co-existence pattern. Industrial topics indicate the mechanisms under the systematic allocation of different occupations. Considering the densely connected occupations as an industrial topic, our approach characterizes regional economies by their topical composition. Unlike the existing survey-based top-down approach, our method provides timely information about the underlying structure of the regional economy, which is critical for policymakers and business leaders especially in our fast-changing economy. Multiplexed quantum repeaters based on dual-species trapped-ion systems

Trapped ions form an advanced technology platform for quantum information processing with long qubit coherence times, high-fidelity quantum logic gates, optically active qubits, and a potential to scale up in size while preserving a high level of connectivity between qubits. These traits make them attractive not only for quantum computing, but also for quantum networking. Dedicated, special-purpose trapped-ion processors in conjunction with suitable interconnecting hardware can be used to form quantum repeaters that enable high-rate quantum communications between distant trapped-ion quantum computers in a network. In this regard, hybrid traps with two distinct species of ions, where one ion species can generate ion-photon entanglement that is useful for optically interfacing with the network and the other has long memory lifetimes, useful for qubit storage, have been proposed for entanglement distribution. We consider an architecture for a repeater based on such dual-species trapped-ion systems. We propose and analyze a protocol based on spatial and temporal mode multiplexing for entanglement distribution across a line network of such repeaters. Our protocol offers enhanced rates compared to rates previously reported for such repeaters. We determine the ion resources required at the repeaters to attain the enhanced rates, and the best rates attainable when constraints are placed on the number of repeaters and the number of ions per repeater. Our results bolster the case for near-term trapped ion systems as quantum repeaters for long distance quantum communications. © 2021, CC BY.

The electric motors and its control technology are key components of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Control of the electric motor is a fundamental issue for traction application in electric vehicles and HEVs. This paper presents the design, development and implementation of a hybrid vehicle using both an electric motor and petrol engine to increase efficiency and decrease carbon footprint. Initially, a prototype of a HEV is designed and the performance values are calculated, before a control system is developed and implemented to control the DC motor speed using a microcontroller as the vehicle's electronic control unit along with simple proportional integral derivative (PID) control using speed as a feedback mechanism. The prototype made incorporated voltage, current, speed and torque sensors for feedback resulting in a closed loop control system which successfully matched the speed input of a user-controlled pedal sensor. A user interface was developed to show the driver of the vehicle key variables such as the revolutions per minute (RPM) of the motor, the speed of the vehicle along with the current being drawn, and the voltage applied to the motor with overall power. To output a variable voltage from the Arduino, a digital output was used with pulse width modulation (PWM) capabilities in order to provide a variable DC voltage to the speed controller. © 2019 IEEE.

Urban heat island effect is a hot topic in urban environment change. Traditional studies mainly focused on one city or several specific cities, hardly comparing the differences in the national scale. In this study, an obvious gap of land surface temperature (LST) was found between urban area and its surroudings by analyzing LST dynamics along the urban-rural gradient in China. Meanwhile, we explored the spatiotemporal pattern of the urban heat island intensity (UHII) in 285 Chinese cities during 2000-2015, which showed the UHII in cities gradually declined from east to west, and the UHII of nearly half of the cities increased during 2000-2015. After these, a weak positive relationship between city sizes and UHIIs was found, which may resulted from the different natural conditions in the national scale.
