As recent work demonstrated, the task of identifying communities in networks can be considered analogous to the classical problem of decoding messages transmitted along a noisy channel. We leverage this analogy to develop a community detection method directly inspired by a standard and widely-used decoding technique. We further simplify the algorithm to reduce the time complexity from quadratic to linear. We test the performance of the original and reduced versions of the algorithm on artificial benchmarks with pre-imposed community structure, and on real networks with annotated community structure. Results of our systematic analysis indicate that the proposed techniques are able to provide satisfactory results. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Introduction:There has been an increasing focus on object segmentation within remote sensing images in recent years due to advancements in remote sensing technology and the growing significance of these images in both military and civilian realms. In these situations, it is critical to accurately and quickly identify a wide variety of objects. In many computer vision applications, scene recognition in aerial-based remote sensing imagery presents a common issue. Method:However, several challenging elements make this work especially difficult: (i) Different objects have different pixel densities; (ii) objects are not evenly distributed in remote sensing images; (iii) objects can appear differently depending on viewing angle and lighting conditions; and (iv) there are fluctuations in the number of objects, even the same type, in remote sensing images. Using a synergistic combination of Markov Random Field (MRF) for accurate labeling and Alex Net model for robust scene recognition, this work presents a novel method for the identification of remote sensing objects. During the labeling step, the use of MRF guarantees precise spatial contextual modeling, which improves comprehension of intricate interactions between nearby aerial objects. By simultaneously using deep learning model, the incorporation of Alex Net in the following classification phase enhances the model's capacity to identify complex patterns in aerial images and adapt to a variety of object attributes. Results:Experiments show that our method performs better than others in terms of classification accuracy and generalization, indicating its efficacy analysis on benchmark datasets such as UC Merced Land Use and AID. Discussion:Several performance measures were calculated to assess the efficacy of the suggested technique, including accuracy, precision, recall, error, and F1-Score. The assessment findings show a remarkable recognition rate of around 97.90% and 98.90%, on the AID and the UC Merced Land datasets,

This paper studies incentive mechanisms for crowd-powered systems, including applications such as collection of personal data for big-data analytics and crowdsourcing. In big-data analytics using personal data, an individual may control the quality of reported data via a privacy-preserving mechanism that randomizes the answer. In crowdsourcing, the quality of the reported answer depends on the amount of effort spent by a worker or a team. In these applications, incentive mechanisms are critical for eliciting data/answers with target quality. This paper focuses the following two fundamental questions: what is the minimum payment required to incentivize an individual to submit a data/answer with quality level ∈? and what incentive mechanisms can achieve the minimum payment? Let ∈i denote the quality of the data/answer reported by individual i: In this paper, we first derive a lower bound on the minimum amount of payment required for guaranteeing quality level ∈i: Inspired by the lower bound, we propose an incentive mechanism, named Winners-Take-All (WINTALL). WINTALL first decides a winning answer based on the reported data, cost functions of individuals, and some prior distribution;and then pays to individuals whose reported data match the winning answer. Under some assumptions, we show that the expected payment of WINTALL matches the lower bound. In the application of private discrete distribution estimation, we show that WINTALL simply rewards individuals whose reported answers match the most popular answer from the reported ones (the prior distribution is not needed in this case). © 2018 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Integrated circuits(ICs) and optoelectronic chips are the foundation stones of the modern information society. The IC industry has been driven by the so-called "Moore's law" in the past 60 years, and now has entered the post Moore's law era. In this paper, we review the recent progress of ICs and optoelectronic chips. The research status, technical challenges and development trend of devices, chips and integrated technologies of typical IC and optoelectronic chips are focused on. The main contents include the development law of IC and optoelectronic chip technology, the IC design and processing technology, emerging memory and chip architecture, brain-like chip structure and its mechanism, heterogeneous integration, quantum chip technology, silicon photonics chip technology, integrated microwave photonic chip, and optoelectronic hybrid integrated chip.

We present an ongoing research on a probabilistic extension of action language BC+. Just like BC+ is defined as a high-level notation of answer set programs for describing transition systems, the proposed language, which we call pBC+, is defined as a high-level notation of LPMLN programs - a probabilistic extension of answer set programs. As preliminary results accomplished, we illustrate how probabilistic reasoning about transition systems, such as prediction, postdiction, and planning problems, as well as probabilistic diagnosis for dynamic domains, can be modeled in pBC+ and computed using an implementation of LPMLN. For future work, we plan to develop a compiler that automatically translates pBC+ description into LPMLN programs, as well as parameter learning in probabilistic action domains through LPMLN weight learning. We will work on defining useful extensions of pBC+ to facilitate hypothetical/counterfactual reasoning. We will also find real-world applications, possibly in robotic domains, to empirically study the performance of this approach to probabilistic reasoning in action domains. © Yi Wang;licensed under Creative Commons License CC-BY

Citation analysis, as a tool for quantitative studies of science, has long emphasized direct citation relations, leaving indirect or high-order citations overlooked. However, a series of early and recent studies demonstrate the existence of indirect and continuous citation impact across generations. Adding to the literature on high-order citations, we introduce the concept of a citation cascade: The constitution of a series of subsequent citing events initiated by a certain publication. We investigate this citation structure by analyzing more than 450,000 articles and over 6 million citation relations. We show that citation impact exists not only within the three generations documented in prior research, but also in much further generations. Still, our experimental results indicate that two to four generations are generally adequate to trace a work's scientific impact. We also explore specific structural properties-such as depth, width, structural virality, and size-which account for differences among individual citation cascades. Finally, we find evidence that it is more important for a scientific work to inspire trans-domain (or indirectly related domain) works than to receive only intra-domain recognition in order to achieve high impact. A three-phase two-level voltage source inverter is the most widely adopted configuration for the grid-integration of large-scale photovoltaic energy systems. To obtain high energy conversion during a wide dynamic range and to comply with the stringent grid codes, faster and high-performance nonlinear controllers are required. This paper develops a novel modulated model predictive current control method to control the photovoltaic central inverter for maximum energy yield and reactive power control. The developed control method estimates the future values of stationary-frame grid currents and assesses them by a duty-cycle optimized cost function. Three stationary voltage vectors corresponding to the low cost value are then synthesized by the space vector modulation stage to produce gating signals for the central inverter. The proposed control method ensures constant switching frequency, low steady-state errors and fast transient response simultaneously during rapid environmental changes. To verify the feasibility of the developed control method, simulation studies are conducted on a 1-MVA photovoltaic system, under solar irradiance, temperature and reactive power changes.

Storage archtectures ranging from minimum bandwidth regenerating encoded distributed storage systems to declustered-parity RAIDs can be designed using dense partial Steiner systems in order to support fast reads, writes, and recovery of failed storage units. In order to ensure good performance, popularities of the data items should be taken into account and the frequencies of accesses to the storage units made as uniform as possible. A proposed combinatorial model ranks items by popularity and assigns data items to elements in a dense partial Steiner system so that the sums of ranks of the elements in each block are as equal as possible. By developing necessary conditions in terms of independent sets, we demonstrate that certain Steiner systems must have a much larger difference between the largest and smallest block sums than is dictated by an elementary lower bound. In contrast, we also show that certain dense partial S(t,t+1,v) designs can be labeled to realize the elementary lower bound. Furthermore, we prove that for every admissible order v, there is a Steiner triple system (S(2,3,v)) whose largest difference in block sums is within an additive constant of the lower bound. Recent trends within computational and data sciences show an increasing recognition and adoption of computational workflows as tools for productivity and reproducibility that also democratize access to platforms and processing know-how. As digital objects to be shared, discovered, and reused, computational workflows benefit from the FAIR principles, which stand for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. The Workflows Community Initiative’s FAIR Workflows Working Group (WCI-FW), a global and open community of researchers and developers working with computational workflows across disciplines and domains, has systematically addressed the application of both FAIR data and software principles to computational workflows. We present recommendations with commentary that reflects our discussions and justifies our choices and adaptations. These are offered to workflow users and authors, workflow management system developers, and providers of workflow services as guidelines for adoption and fodder for discussion. The FAIR recommendations for workflows that we propose in this paper will maximize their value as research assets and facilitate their adoption by the wider community. © 2024, CC BY.

Aim or PurposeUnderstanding social determinants of health (SDoH) in dental patients is important for supporting population health and clinical decision making but it remains unclear how well these are recorded in electronic dental records (EDRs) and if SDoH can be extracted from clinical notes. Materials and MethodsWe retrospectively examined 100 clinical notes from 112,881 records of patient encounters that included an examination item in the Nepean Local Health District (LHD), with ethics approval from the LHD. To create gold standard annotation for a rule-based natural language processing (NLP) system, we applied expert domain knowledge, WordNet and word2vec embeddings, and the Unified Modelling Language System to identify 20,168 records that were more likely to include SDoH. Of these, we randomly sampled 100 records and 5 dental students annotated them using a schema adapted from the World Health Organization categorisation of SDoH. ResultsThe 100 records were from 100 unique patients, 44% of these clinical encounters included a comprehensive oral examination. The most common SDoH was available for sugar (67%), tobacco (24.5%), alcohol (4.3%), housing (3.2%), and employment (1%), and 37% of clinical notes had no SDoH information available even though they included concepts that suggested SDoH. Information was complete for 9.5% of records describing sugar consumption, and 7.9% for tobacco, but complete details were rarely described for alcohol and housing. ConclusionsClinical notes often include SDoH but it is important to understand the limits of what can be extracted to inform the feasibility of population health studies, and the design of technologies that might support improved consistency and completeness of SDoH in EDRs.
