We propose a method for extracting hierarchical backbones from a bipartite network. Our method leverages the observation that a hierarchical relationship between two nodes in a bipartite network is often manifested as an asymmetry in the conditional probability of observing the connections to them from the other node set. Our method estimates both the importance and direction of the hierarchical relationship between a pair of nodes, thereby providing a flexible way to identify the essential part of the networks. Using semi-synthetic benchmarks, we show that our method outperforms existing methods at identifying planted hierarchy while offering more flexibility. Application of our method to empirical datasets-a bipartite network of skills and individuals as well as the network between gene products and Gene Ontology (GO) terms-demonstrates the possibility of automatically extracting or augmenting ontology from data. AI programming toward autonomous software generation is not only a highly demanded technology by the software industry, but also a hard challenge to the theories of software engineering and computational intelligence. A methodology and tool for autonomous program generation (APG) are recently developed based on Real-Time Process Algebra (RTPA). This paper demonstrates an experimental result of autonomous code generation on a digital clock system by the APG tool. The experimental results indicate a novel approach towards AI programming for machine-enabled software generation theories and technologies.

Without any doubt, for the last decade, online social networks have been hubs for political participation both for elite members such as politicians, parliamentary members, and ordinary citizens. Each online activity leaves digital traces of the users participating which enable researchers to study online political behavior and build multi-faceted sensors to understand the underlying dynamics. In this talk, I broadly focus on three facets of online political behaviors of users and how to model them. First, I investigate the formations of communities in online political networks. Second, I focus on detecting negative linkages between users such as enmities or antagonisms. Third, I present the problem of the controversial issue and frame detection in online political networks. For each part, I give one exemplary recent work and possible future directions to take. Copyright held by the author(s).

In this paper, we propose a drone-based wildfire monitoring system for remote and hard-to-reach areas. This system utilizes autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with the main advantage of providing on-demand monitoring service faster than the current approaches of using satellite images, manned aircraft and remotely controlled drones. Furthermore, using autonomous drones facilitates minimizing human intervention in risky wildfire zones. In particular, to develop a fully autonomous system, we propose a distributed leader-follower coalition formation model to cluster a set of drones into multiple coalitions that collectively cover the designated monitoring field. The coalition leader is a drone that employs observer drones potentially with different sensing and imaging capabilities to hover in circular paths and collect imagery information from the impacted areas. The objectives of the proposed system include: i) to cover the entire fire zone with a minimum number of drones, and ii) to minimize the energy consumption and latency of the available drones to fly to the fire zone. Simulation results confirm that the performance of the proposed system- without the need for inter-coalition communications- approaches that of a centrally-optimized system.

Background: In concussion, functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has been shown to detect differences in cortical oxygenation during neurocognitive testing, with concussed adults manifesting less task-based cortical activation compared to controls. In addition, fNIRS has identified significantly reduced interhemispheric coherence in adult concussions relative to controls. In addition, adults with greater post-concussive symptom burden demonstrate lower task-related oxygenation in the frontal and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and reduced connectivity compared to controls.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the leading cause of progressive chronic kidney disease in adults in the United States. However, the impact of preterm birth on the progression of DKD has not been studied. The goal of this project was to determine the effect of preterm birth on kidney health after exposure to hyperglycemia. CD-1 pups born preterm (19 days post conception (dpc)) and term (20 dpc) were studied, and outcomes of the male mice were reported. Preterm and term mice were treated with streptozotocin at six weeks to induce hyperglycemia. Body weight and blood sugar were monitored. Histologic, molecular, and imaging techniques were used to characterize the mice at 18 weeks. The preterm mice with diabetes had a lower podocyte density, lower proximal tubular fraction, and more atubular glomeruli compared to the term mice without diabetes. The preterm mice with diabetes also had a lower podocyte density and lower renin expression compared to term mice with diabetes. Based on single-cell RNA sequencing, the preterm mice with diabetes had increased expression of genes related to the angiogenesis migration pathway-related in endothelial cells and increased expression of genes in the actin adhesion pathway in podocytes compared to term mice with diabetes. Furthermore, the preterm mice with diabetes exhibited a weaker endothelial cell-podocyte interaction compared to term mice with diabetes. These data suggest that preterm birth increases susceptibility to glomerular and tubular damage after a brief "second hit" of hyperglycemia. In conclusion, preterm birth disrupts endothelial-podocyte crosstalk and increases susceptibility to kidney injury induced by hyperglycemia.

Autonomous car simulating is both safer and more economical than directly using real car for self-driving related research work. In this paper, we propose a framework that fully utilize the Lego Ev3's sensor and Android App to simulate an autonomous car. First, the App receives sensor data from Lego Ev3 and images from Android phone, then using specified strategies to guide computing these data. Finally, when the computation is completed, App makes decisions to order Lego Ev3 avoiding obstacles in front of it. The computing process contains image process, simultaneous mapping construction and multi data fusing, which is highly related to autonomous car technology, but safer and more economical. Experimental results show that the proposed framework can be used for autonomous car simulating, so we can do more autonomous car related research works on this framework in the future.

Simultaneous localization and mapping(SLAM) function is a key component for the indoor robot. Many researchers use the Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging(LIDAR) or depth camera to enhance the mapping process. However, LIDAR and depth camera are so expensive, so the image based SLAM algorithm becomes the first choice of SLAM. Visual SLAM only use image information to detect object, but the process is time-consuming, and usually it comes with low precise. In this paper, we propose a SLAM algorithm with the help of ultra sound data, gyroscope data and an ordinary camera on an Android phone. Although the camera does not provide any depth information for mapping, we use combine the ultra sound, gyroscope data and the image information to enhance the mapping process. Moreover, we use deep learning algorithm to detect the object in the image, and then use the information to refine the map. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively improve the quality of the map.

Information processing of guide dog robot requires expensive computing resources to meet real-time performance. We propose an edge computing framework based on Intel Up-Squared board and neural compute stick. Image processing and real-time control are performed on the framework. In addition, the voice recognition and commanding are also implemented, which are processed on Amazon cloud service. Vision, speech, and control services are integrated by ASU VIPLE (Visual IoT/Robotics Programming Language Environment). A prototype is developed, which implements the guide dog's obstacle avoidance, traffic sign recognition and following, and voice interaction with human.

This Research Work in Progress Paper presents our ongoing work to encourage student to reflect while participating in a distributed self-assessment process. We shed light on the case of low reflect participation and the change in process we made that led to a significant increase in both the quantity and quality of students reflects. To evaluate the effect of the intervention, we conducted two classroom study for an introductory Java course with over 500 students. From the latest enhancements in the current study, we observed that the overall reflecting engagement from the students has significantly increased compared to our initial work. To evaluate the reflects quality, we deployed an automated measure that classifies the constructiveness of the comment based on its relevant and subjectivity to the domain. This work describes the details of the interventions along with the resulted observations. The main objective was to encourage learners to provide thoughtful reflects which we were able to increase along with the positive effect on their performance.
