Robot is an autonomous system that integrates advances AI technologies. This paper deals with the adaptive path planning and optimization problems for robots in dynamic environments. We propose a novel route planning method based on the maze representation of workplace layouts. We generate a universal path tree by a path optimization algorithm. Then, any given entrances and exits of target nodes can be reduced to a deterministic path searching problem. Our method can quickly determine the optimal path between any pair of entrance/exit nodes. The maze-based method provides an efficient and robust route planning solution for robots in real-time and dynamic workplaces. Experiments have demonstrated the effectiveness of the method beyond traditional heuristic technologies.

On the inevitability of online echo chambers

While social media make it easy to connect with and access information from anyone, they also facilitate basic inuence and unfriending mechanisms that may lead to segregated and polarized clusters known as "echo chambers." Here we study the conditions in which such echo chambers emerge by introducing a simple model of information sharing in online social networks with the two ingredients of inuence and unfriending. Users can change both their opinions and social connections based on the information to which they are exposed through sharing. The model dynamics show that even with minimal amounts of inuence and unfriending, the social network rapidly devolves into segregated, homogeneous communities. These predictions are consistent with empirical data from Twitter. Although our findings suggest that echo chambers are somewhat inevitable given the mechanisms at play in online social media, they also provide insights into possible mitigation strategies. Qualifying threshold of "take-off" stage for successfully disseminated creative ideas

The creative process is essentially Darwinian and only a small proportion of creative ideas are selected for further development. However, the threshold that identifies this small fraction of successfully disseminated creative ideas at their early stage has not been thoroughly analyzed through the lens of Rogers’s innovation diffusion theory. Here, we take highly cited (top 1%) research papers as an example of the most successfully disseminated creative ideas and explore the time it takes and citations it receives at their "take-off" stage, which play a crucial role in the dissemination of creativity. Results show the majority of highly cited papers will reach 10% and 25% of their total citations within two years and four years, respectively. Interestingly, our results also present a minimal number of articles that attract their first citation before publication. As for the discipline, number of references, and Price index, we find a significant difference exists: Clinical, Pre-Clinical & Health and Life Sciences are the first two disciplines to reach the C10% and C25% in a shorter amount of time. Highly cited papers with limited references usually take more time to reach 10% and 25% of their total citations. In addition, highly cited papers will attract citations rapidly when they cite more recent references. Multipartite viruses have a genome divided into different disconnected viral particles. A majority of multipartite viruses infect plants; very few target animals. To understand why, we use a simple, network-based susceptible-latent-infectious-recovered model. We show both analytically and numerically that, provided that the average degree of the contact network exceeds a critical value, even in the absence of an explicit microscopic advantage, multipartite viruses have a lower threshold to colonizing network-structured populations compared to a well-mixed population. We further corroborate this finding on two-dimensional lattice networks, which better represent the typical contact structures of plants.

In cloud computing, data is duplicated to prevent data loss. One way to achieve data consistency in such a distributed computing systems is to use a blockchain. Based on practical Byzantine fault tolerance (PBFT), a specific type of blockchain, this paper proposes a synchronous Byzantine fault tolerance (SBFT) algorithm that not only maintains data consistency, but also has much higher efficiency than other general blockchain algorithms. We provide experimental results that demonstrate the algorithm's data consistency, efficiency, and reliability.

Dynamical processes exhibiting absorbing states are essential in the modeling of a large variety of situations from material science to epidemiology and social sciences. Such processes exhibit the possibility of avalanching behavior upon slow driving. Here, we study the distribution of sizes and durations of avalanches for well-known dynamical processes on complex networks. We find that all analyzed models display similar critical behavior, characterized by the presence of two distinct regimes. At small scales, sizes, and durations of avalanches exhibit distributions that are dependent on the network topology and the model dynamics. At asymptotically large scales instead—irrespective of the type of dynamics and of the topology of the underlying network—sizes and durations of avalanches are characterized by power-law distributions with the exponents of the standard mean-field critical branching process.

Shipping companies costs related to handling and moving empty containers (due to trade imbalance between different parts of the world) have become a significant part of the total operational costs bared by the companies, with consequent pressure on the profit level. This is the empty container repositioning problem (ECR): at each port of call, we need to choose how many empty containers to reposition, thus losing the ability to accept demand, and the resulting potential profit. This work solves the ECR considering: 1) inelastic demand faced by shipping companies;2) freight rate uncertainty;and 3) differing objectives between the equipment office who oversees repositioning containers and the local offices selling the vessel space. We propose a Target Price Policy where the equipment office could charge local sales offices the target prices derived from a stochastic model to push them to make better demand fulfillment decisions. The proposed Target Price policy does not require accurate forecast of future price and demand, hence showing its practical value. The optimal target prices are also influenced by the price distribution: the volatility of price has a larger impact on the desired level of imbalance between eastbound laden container flow and westbound laden container flow. Wildfire monitoring in remote areas using autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles

In this paper, we propose a drone-based wildfire monitoring system for remote and hard-to-reach areas. This system utilizes autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with the main advantage of providing on-demand monitoring service faster than the current approaches of using satellite images, manned aircraft and remotely controlled drones. Furthermore, using autonomous drones facilitates minimizing human intervention in risky wildfire zones. In particular, to develop a fully autonomous system, we propose a distributed leader-follower coalition formation model to cluster a set of drones into multiple coalitions that collectively cover the designated monitoring field. The coalition leader is a drone that employs observer drones potentially with different sensing and imaging capabilities to hover in circular paths and collect imagery information from the impacted areas. The objectives of the proposed system include: I) to cover the entire fire zone with a minimum number of drones, and ii) to minimize the energy consumption and latency of the available drones to fly to the fire zone. Simulation results confirm that the performance of the proposed system-without the need for inter-coalition communications-approaches that of a centrally-optimized system. . BACKGROUND:Reducing the global new-born mortality is a paramount challenge for humanity. There are approximately 786,323 live births in the UK each year according to the office for National Statistics; around 10% of these newborn infants require assistance during this transition after birth. Each year around, globally around 2.5 million newborns die within their first month. The main causes are complications due to prematurity and during delivery. To act in a timely manner and prevent further damage, health professionals should rely on accurate monitoring of the main vital signs heart rate and respiratory rate. AIMS:To present a clinical perspective on innovative, non-invasive methods to monitor heart rate and respiratory rate in babies highlighting their advantages and limitations in comparison with well-established methods. METHODS:Using the data collected in our recently published systematic review we highlight the barriers and facilitators for the novel sensor devices in obtaining reliable heart rate measurements. Details about difficulties related to the application of sensors and interfaces, time to display, and user feedback are explored. We also provide a unique overview of using a non-invasive respiratory rate monitoring method by extracting RR from the pulse oximetry trace of newborn babies. RESULTS:Novel sensors to monitor heart rate offer the advantages of minimally obtrusive technologies but have limitations due to movement artefact, bad sensor coupling, intermittent measurement, and poor-quality recordings compared to gold standard well established methods. Respiratory rate can be derived accurately from pleth recordings in infants. CONCLUSION:Some limitations have been identified in current methods to monitor heart rate and respiratory rate in newborn babies. Novel minimally invasive sensors have advantages that may help clinical practice. Further research studies are needed to assess whether they are sufficiently accurate, practical, and reliable to
