User satisfaction is pivotal to the success of a mobile application. A recent study has shown that 49% of users would abandon a web-based application if it failed to load within 10 seconds. At the same time, it is imperative to maximize energy efficiency to ensure maximum usage of the limited energy source available to smartphones while maintaining the necessary levels of user satisfaction. An important factor to consider, that has been previously neglected, is variability of execution times of an application, requiring them to be modeled as stochastic quantities. This changes the nature of the objective function and the constraints of the underlying optimization problem. In this paper, we present a new approach to optimal energy control of mobile applications running on modern smartphone devices, focusing on the need to ensure a specified level of user satisfaction. The proposed statistical models address both single and multi-stage applications and are used in the formulation of an optimization problem, the solution to which is a static, lightweight controller that optimizes energy efficiency of mobile applications, subject to constraints on the likelihood that the application execution time meets a given deadline. We demonstrate the proposed models and the corresponding optimization method on three common mobile applications running on a real Qualcomm Snapdragon 8074 mobile chipset. The results show that the proposed statistical estimates of application execution times are within 99.34% of the measured values. Additionally, on the actual Qualcomm Snapdragon 8074 mobile chipset, the proposed control scheme achieves a 29% power savings over commonly-used Linux governors while maintaining an average web page load time of 2 seconds with a likelihood of 90%.

A stochastic approach to shortcut bridging in programmable matter

In a self-organizing particle system, an abstraction of programmable matter, simple computational elements called particles with limited memory and communication self-organize to solve system-wide problems of movement, coordination, and configuration. In this paper, we consider a stochastic, distributed, local, asynchronous algorithm for "shortcut bridging", in which particles self-assemble bridges over gaps that simultaneously balance minimizing the length and cost of the bridge. Army ants of the genus Eciton have been observed exhibiting a similar behavior in their foraging trails, dynamically adjusting their bridges to satisfy an efficiency trade-off using local interactions. Using techniques from Markov chain analysis, we rigorously analyze our algorithm, show it achieves a near-optimal balance between the competing factors of path length and bridge cost, and prove that it exhibits a dependence on the angle of the gap being "shortcut" similar to that of the ant bridges. We also present simulation results that qualitatively compare our algorithm with the army ant bridging behavior. Our work gives a plausible explanation of how convergence to globally optimal configurations can be achieved via local interactions by simple organisms (e.g., ants) with some limited computational power and access to random bits. The proposed algorithm also demonstrates the robustness of the stochastic approach to algorithms for programmable matter, as it is a surprisingly simple extension of our previous stochastic algorithm for compression. Separation of network control from devices in Software Defined Network (SDN) allows for centralized implementation and management of security policies in a cloud computing environment. The ease of programmability also makes SDN a great platform implementation of various initiatives that involve application deployment, dynamic topology changes, and decentralized network management in a multi-tenant data center environment. Dynamic change of network topology, or host reconfiguration in such networks might require corresponding changes to the flow rules in the SDN based cloud environment. Verifying adherence of these new flow policies in the environment to the organizational security policies and ensuring a conflict free environment is especially challenging. In this paper, we extend the work on rule conflicts from a traditional environment to an SDN environment, introducing a new classification to describe conflicts stemming from cross-layer conflicts. Our framework ensures that in any SDN based cloud, flow rules do not have conflicts at any layer; thereby ensuring that changes to the environment do not lead to unintended consequences. We demonstrate the correctness, feasibility and scalability of our framework through a proof-of-concept prototype.

Active inference is an ambitious theory that treats perception, inference and action selection of autonomous agents under the heading of a single principle. It suggests biologically plausible explana-tions for many cognitive phenomena, including consciousness. In active inference, action selection is driven by an objective function that evaluates possible future actions with respect to current, inferred beliefs about the world. Active inference at its core is independent from extrinsic rewards, resulting in a high level of robustness across e.g. different environments or agent morphologies. In the liter- A ture, paradigms that share this independence have been summarised under the notion of intrinsic motivations. In general and in contrast to active inference, these models of motivation come without a commitment to particular inference and action selection mechanisms. In this article, we study if the inference and action selection machinery of active inference can also be used by alternatives to the originally included intrinsic motivation. The perception-action loop explicitly relates inference and action selection to the environment and agent memory, and is consequently used as foundation for our analysis. We reconstruct the active inference approach, locate the original formulation within, and show how alternative intrinsic motivations can be used while keeping many of the original fea-tures intact. Furthermore, we illustrate the connection to universal reinforcement learning by means of our formalism. Active inference research may profit from comparisons of the dynamics induced by alternative intrinsic motivations. Research on intrinsic motivations may profit from an additional way to implement intrinsically motivated agents that also share the biological plausibility of active inference.62F15, 91B06 Copyright © 2018, The Authors. We consider a two-machine-one-buffer production system with each machine's condition following a certain degradation process. An analytical model of the integration of machine condition degradation and productivity is introduced. Analytical methods based on the Markov chain approach are developed to quantify the interaction between machine condition degradation process and the overall system performance. In addition, system-theoretical properties are investigated to provide insight on how the system parameters affect the system performance. These methods provide a quantitative tool for modeling, analyzing, and improving manufacturing systems with tight interactions between machine condition degradation and productivity.

engineering education has attained significant attention in recent years due to the increasing need to better prepare future engineers for the challenges in modern industrial settings. Among these, finding solutions to complex analytical problems through collaboration, using abilities such as self-learning can be considered the most critical challenges. Project-based learning has surged as a solution in educational institutions to better prepare students in both analytical and interpersonal skills, which are in high demand for engineering professionals. In the Project-based learning methodology, team projects bring several advantages to traditional learning methods such as promoting collaboration, cultivating inter-personal skillset, learning outside of the classroom and critical thinking. However, it can also have uneven distribution of the workload where only certain members of the team learn the intended topics. This results in low student-learning effectiveness when focusing on the classroom average outcome. This project focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of project-based learning by utilizing a component design problem, based on constraints and expectations, and comparing the final component design, the project report and evaluation results from the project performed in groups and individually in two different classes. This learning assessment was conducted in the Mechanical Design class, a junior level course in the Mechanical engineering curriculum. The potential impact that working in a team or individually has on a student will be assessed by evaluating the performance of each student with a written report and an in-class quiz regarding the topics of the project. © American Society for engineering Education, 2016.

This paper introduces a graphical interface for Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) specifications for mobile robots. It is a sketch based interface built on the Android platform which makes the LTL control interface more friendly to non-expert users. By predefining a set of areas of interest, this interface can quickly and efficiently create plans that satisfy extended plan goals in LTL. The interface can also allow users to customize the paths for this plan by sketching a set of reference trajectories. Given the custom paths by the user, the LTL specification and the environment, the interface generates a plan balancing the customized paths and the LTL specifications. We also show experimental results with the implemented interface.

Often the filters learned by Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) from different image datasets appear similar. This similarity of filters is often exploited for the purposes of transfer learning. This is also being used as an initialization technique for different tasks in the same dataset or for the same task in similar datasets. Off-the-shelf CNN features have capitalized on this idea to promote their networks as best transferable and most general and are used in a cavalier manner in day-to-day computer vision tasks. While the filters learned by these CNNs are related to the atomic structures of the images from which they are learnt, all datasets learn similar looking low-level filters. With the understanding that a dataset that contains many such atomic structures learn general filters and are therefore useful to initialize other networks with, we propose a way to analyse and quantify generality. We applied this metric on several popular character recognition, natural image and a medical image dataset, and arrive at some interesting conclusions. On further experimentation we also discovered that particular classes in a dataset themselves are more general than others.

Online social communities are becoming increasingly popular platforms for people to share information, seek emotional support, and maintain accountability for losing weight. Studying the discourse in these communities can offer insights on how users benefit from using these applications. This paper presents an analysis of language and discourse patterns in forum posts by users who lose weight and keep it off versus users with fluctuating weight dynamics. In contrast to prior studies, we have access to the weekly self-reported check-in weights of users along with their forum posts. This paper also presents a study on how goal-oriented forums are different from general online forums in terms of language markers. Our results reveal differences about how the types of posts made by users vary along with their weight-loss patterns. These insights are closely related to the power dynamics of social interactions and can enable better design of weight-loss applications thereby contributing to a healthy society. Microsoft released its Robotics Developer Studio (MSRDS) and Visual Programming Language (VPL) in 2006. Microsoft VPL is service-oriented, uses workflow-based visual programming, and has strong support for parallel computing. It is a milestone and flagship in software engineering and in computer science education. Many universities and high schools have adopted VPL as a tool for teaching computing and engineering concepts and for programming robots. Unfortunately, as part of Microsoft's restructuring plan, the robotics division of Microsoft Research was suspended on September 22, 2014, leaving the Microsoft VPL community without updates and support. Arizona State University (ASU) is among the schools that adopted VPL since its first release in 2006. We started to find a solution to our VPL-based curriculum in 2014. This paper presents our research and development of a new visual programming language and its development environment: ASU VIPLE (Visual IoT/Robotics Programming Language Environment). ASU VIPLE extends the discontinued Microsoft VPL to sustain our curriculum and to help the community with their VPL projects. ASU VIPLE supports LEGO EV3 and all IoT devices based on an open architecture. ASU VIPLE integrates engineering design process, workflow, fundamental programming concepts, control flow, parallel computing, event-driven programming seamlessly into the curriculum. It has been pilot tested at Arizona State University in summer 2015 and in spring 2016, as well as in several other universities.
