ConnectomeAE: Multimodal brain connectome-based dual-branch autoencoder and its application in the diagnosis of brain diseases

Background and Objective: Exploring the dependencies between multimodal brain networks and integrating node features to enhance brain disease diagnosis remains a significant challenge. Some work has examined only brain connectivity changes in patients, ignoring important information about radiomics features such as shape and texture of individual brain regions in structural images. To this end, this study proposed a novel deep learning approach to integrate multimodal brain connectome information and regional radiomics features for brain disease diagnosis. Methods: A dual-branch autoencoder (ConnectomeAE) based on multimodal brain connectomes was proposed for brain disease diagnosis. Specifically, a matrix of radiomics feature extracted from structural magnetic resonance image (MRI) was used as Rad_AE branch inputs for learning important brain region features. Functional brain network built from functional MRI image was used as inputs to Cycle_AE for capturing brain disease-related connections. By separately learning node features and connection features from multimodal brain networks, the method demonstrates strong adaptability in diagnosing different brain diseases. Results: ConnectomeAE was validated on two publicly available datasets. The experimental results show that ConnectomeAE achieved excellent diagnostic performance with an accuracy of 70.7 % for autism spectrum disorder and 90.5 % for Alzheimer's disease. A comparison of training time with other methods indicated that ConnectomeAE exhibits simplicity and efficiency suitable for clinical applications. Furthermore, the interpretability analysis of the model aligned with previous studies, further supporting the biological basis of ConnectomeAE. Conclusions: ConnectomeAE could effectively leverage the complementary information between multimodal brain connectomes for brain disease diagnosis. Stress Severity Detection in College Students Using Emotional Pulse Signals and Deep Learning

College students face increasing stress from difficulties with studies, employment, and social interactions, which, if left unaddressed, may lead to depression and physical illnesses. Currently, the detection of stress severity relies on self-assessment scales, while machine learning or deep learning-based approaches primarily focus on classification. This study proposes an approach using pulse signals containing emotional cues and deep learning to automatically detect the severity of stress in college students. Firstly, pulse signals of 177 college students were collected using photoplethysmography (PPG) during they watched five virtual reality (VR) emotional scenes, including calm, sadness, happiness, fear, and tension. Pulse rate variability (PRV) and discrete PPG (dPPG) were extracted from these signals as input for detecting stress severity. Then, the proposed stress detection framework, 1DCNN-BiLSTM + Cross-Attention + XGBoost, was employed to detect stress severity, incorporating an emotional Cross-Attention mechanism. The impact of induced emotions on stress severity detection performance was examined. The results indicated that stress severity detection in emotional scenes outperformed in calm. Furthermore, the detection performance that integrates multiple emotions surpassed single emotions. The fusion of PRV and dPPG signals yielded the best detection performance. This study provides an end-to-end automated approach for detecting stress severity in college students. © 2010-2012 IEEE.

This paper presents an interactive motion control method based on reinforcement learning, designed to assist children with autism who have social motor impairments through a mirror game intervention. The virtual teacher uses the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) algorithm to optimize its actions, guiding the participant to follow a Lissajous trajectory. To ensure safety, a motion-correction mechanism was developed, which automatically adjusts actions when the predicted trajectory surpasses predefined safety boundaries. The reward function considers both the distance between the virtual teacher and the target trajectory, as well as the distance between the virtual teacher and the participant, with dynamic adjustments applied by the motion-correction mechanism. Experimental results demonstrate that the virtual teacher effectively guides the participant towards the target trajectory while adhering to safety constraints.

Improved CNP-Based Task Allocation for Large-Scale UAVs with Timing Constraints

For task allocation for multiple uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) with time -series constraints, a time sequence task allocation method based on an improved contract net protocol (CNP) algorithm is proposed considering the influence of task requirements, timing constraints, and execution time of tasks. A novel reward function with time discounting was designed, and the optimization model of time-series task allocation was established with the goal of maximizing the reward of task execution. To adapt to the requirements of task execution time and multi-UAV cooperation, three stages - task release, bidding, and winning of the contract network protocol algorithm - are improved. Then the improved algorithm is used to solve the problem and the optimal task execution sequence is generated for each UAV. Simulation results verified the effectiveness and real-time performance of the proposed method, which can execute all the tasks in less time according to the timing requirements. © 2025 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Seamless Graph Task Scheduling over Dynamic Vehicular Clouds: A Hybrid Methodology for Integrating Pilot and Instantaneous Decisions

Vehicular clouds (VCs) play a crucial role in the Internet-of-Vehicles (IoV) ecosystem by securing essential computing resources for a wide range of tasks. This paPertackles the intricacies of resource provisioning in dynamic VCs for computation-intensive tasks, represented by undirected graphs for parallel processing over multiple vehicles. We model the dynamics of VCs by considering multiple factors, including varying communication quality among vehicles, fluctuating computing capabilities of vehicles, uncertain contact duration among vehicles, and dynamic data exchange costs between vehicles. Our primary goal is to obtain feasible assignments between task components and nearby vehicles, called templates, in a timely manner with minimized task completion time and data exchange overhead. To achieve this, we propose a hybrid graph task scheduling (P-HTS) methodology that combines offline and online decision-making modes. For the offline mode, we introduce an approach called risk-aware pilot isomorphic subgraph searching (RA-PilotISS), which predicts feasible solutions for task scheduling in advance based on historical information. Then, for the online mode, we propose time-efficient instantaneous isomorphic subgraph searching (TE-InstaISS), serving as a backup approach for quickly identifying new optimal scheduling template when the one identified by RA-PilotISS becomes invalid due to changing conditions. Through comprehensive experiments, we demonstrate the superiority of our proposed hybrid mechanism compared to state-of-the-art methods in terms of various evaluative metrics, e.g., time efficiency such as the delay caused by seeking for possible templates and task completion time, as well as cost function, upon considering different VC scales and graph task topologies. Motion Forecasting for Autonomous Vehicles: A Survey

In recent years, the field of autonomous driving has attracted increasingly significant public interest. Accurately forecasting the future behavior of various traffic participants is essential for the decision-making of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs). In this paper, we focus on both scenario-based and perception-based motion forecasting for AVs. We propose a formal problem formulation for motion forecasting and summarize the main challenges confronting this area of research. We also detail representative datasets and evaluation metrics pertinent to this field. Furthermore, this study classifies recent research into two main categories: supervised learning and self-supervised learning, reflecting the evolving paradigms in both scenario-based and perception-based motion forecasting. In the context of supervised learning, we thoroughly examine and analyze each key element of the methodology. For self-supervised learning, we summarize commonly adopted techniques. The paper concludes and discusses potential research directions, aiming to propel progress in this vital area of AV technology. © 2025, CC BY.

With the proliferation of IoT devices, there is an escalating demand for enhanced computing and communication capabilities. Mobile Edge computing (MEC) addresses this need by relocating computing resources to the network edge, thereby delivering swifter and more efficient services. This paper introduces a computation offloading and energy consumption optimization framework that leverages Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and MEC. The scheme aims to maximize energy efficiency through the optimization of task allocation, RIS phase shifts, and UAV trajectories. By employing the Multi-Agent Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MATD3) reinforcement learning algorithm, the paper further refines UAV trajectories and RIS configurations. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method surpasses the traditional Concave-Convex Procedure (CCCP) algorithm in both UAV trajectory control and RIS configuration, demonstrating quicker convergence and enhanced stability. The method proves to be adaptable to diverse environments and tasks, showcasing notable benefits in RIS-assisted interference suppression, particularly with large RIS, thereby enhancing UAV data reception rates. Additionally, MATD3 exhibits faster and smoother convergence for extended task durations and smaller RIS scenarios. Simulation results reveal that UAVs tend to move closer to RIS, with energy efficiency falling as IoT tasks increase, affirming the proposed algorithm's high energy efficiency and effectiveness. © 2025 IEEE.

PCDe: A personalized conversational debiasing framework for next POI recommendation with uncertain check-ins

In the next point-of-interest (POI) recommendation, users may visit individual POIs within larger gathering places, such as shopping malls (termed as collective POIs), leading to uncertain check-ins. Our data analysis unveils that (1) the presence of such uncertain check-ins raises a new type of bias, termed as scale bias, that is, the recommender tends to recommend collective POIs over individual POIs, which further exacerbates the commonly-observed popularity bias, that is, the recommender tends to recommend popular POIs rather than unpopular ones;and (2) the existence of the above two types of biases significantly affects the fairness of next POI recommendation with uncertain check-ins. Therefore, we propose a Personalized Conversational Debiasing framework (PCDe) by exploiting the advantages of conversational techniques to capture personalized dynamic user preferences, thereby mitigating both scale and popularity biases at a personalized level. Specifically, the inquiry component designs an improved question-and-answer manner based on personalized information entropy, thus mitigating the scale bias. The rewarding component then introduces a novel debiasing reward mechanism based on the Jensen–Shannon divergence to make the recommendations better aligned with users’ historical preferences on popularity, thereby addressing the popularity bias. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our proposed PCDe over state-of-the-arts (SOTAs) regarding mitigating scale and popularity biases while enhancing recommendation accuracy thanks to its personalized debiasing mechanism. © 2025

STMDNet: A Lightweight Directional Framework for Motion Pattern Recognition of Tiny Targets

Recognizing motions of tiny targets—only few dozen pixels—in cluttered backgrounds remains a fundamental challenge when standard feature-based or deep learning methods fail under scarce visual cues. We propose STMDNet, a model-based computational framework to Recognize motions of tiny targets at variable velocities under low-sampling frequency scenarios. STMDNet designs a novel dual-dynamics-and-correlation mechanism, harnessing ipsilateral excitation to integrate target cues and leakage-enhancing-type contralateral inhibition to suppress large-object and background motion interference. Moreover, we develop the first collaborative directional encoding-decoding strategy that determines the motion direction from only one correlation per spatial location, cutting computational costs to one-eighth of prior methods. Further, simply substituting the backbone of a strong STMD model with STMDNet raises AUC by 24%, yielding an enhanced STMDNet-F. Evaluations on real-world low-sampling frequency datasets show state-of-the-art results, surpassing the deep learning baseline. Across diverse speeds, STMDNet-F improves mF1 by 19%, 16%, and 8% at 240Hz, 120Hz, and 60Hz, respectively, while STMDNet achieves 87 FPS on a single CPU thread. These advances highlight STMDNet as a next-generation backbone for tiny target motion pattern recognition and underscore its broader potential to revitalize model-based visual approaches in motion detection.
