This paper describes a novel framework to segment elongated strips of marine oil spill based on a cooperative model. We construct a higher-order energy function which characterizes data consistency and smoothness of varying orders in an integrated framework. We model the data consistency in terms of a finite Gamma mixture and then estimate its parameter values using an expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. In order to characterise the smoothness term we exploit a cooperative model which not only penalizes the length but also addresses the diversity of the object boundary. This advantage makes our framework more effective for segmenting elongated strip oil spill than traditional energy minimization methods such as graph cuts. Our framework is further evaluated using practical SAR images of oil spill recordings and its effectiveness is validated.

Cloth is a flexible thin material with low stretch. Although large stiffness can reduce stretch to some extent, it degrades numerical computing stability. Introducing effective constraints into the system is another common method to reduce stretch. In this paper, a novel constraint method is deduced and implemented. The bending deformation of cloth is firstly analyzed from micro-mesh view, based on which, constraint method is deduced. Then, constraint is combined with dynamic equation to simulate cloth. Overstretch of cloth is controlled at the same time realistic wrinkles and folds are maintained. Finally, based on this method, some experiments are conducted and the analysis and evaluation are given.

In this paper, we propose a new learning algorithm, named as the Cooperative and Geometric Learning Algorithm (CGLA), to solve problems of maneuverability, collision avoidance and information sharing in path planning for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The contributions of CGLA are three folds: (1) CGLA is designed for path planning based on cooperation of multiple UAVs. Technically, CGLA exploits a new defined individual cost matrix, which leads to an efficient path planning algorithm for multiple UAVs. (2) The convergence of the proposed algorithm for calculating the cost matrix is proven theoretically, and the optimal path in terms of path length and risk measure from a starting point to a target point can be calculated in polynomial time. (3) In CGLA, the proposed individual weight matrix can be efficiently calculated and adaptively updated based on the geometric distance and risk information shared among UAVs. Finally, risk evaluation is introduced first time in this paper for UAV navigation and extensive computer simulation results validate the effectiveness and feasibility of CGLA for safe navigation of multiple UAVs. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Supervisory control reconfiguration can handle the uncertainties including resource failures and task changes in discrete event systems. It was not addressed to exploit the robustness of closed-loop systems to accommodate some uncertainties in the prior studies. Such exploitation can cost-efficiently achieve reconfigurability and flexibility for real systems. This paper presents a robust reconfiguration method based on Petri nets (PNs) and integer programming for supervisory control of resource allocation systems (RASs) subject to varying resource allocation relationships. An allocation relationship is seen as a control specification while the execution processes requiring resources as an uncontrolled plant. First, a robust reconfiguration mechanism is proposed. It includes updating the P-invariant-based supervisor and evolving the state of the closed-loop system. The latter adapts to the control specification changes by the self-regulation of the closed-loop system's state. Next, two novel integer programming models for control reconfiguration are proposed, called a reconfiguration model with acceptability and reconfiguration one with specification correction. Since both models integrate the firability condition of transitions, no additional efforts are required for the state reachability analysis. Finally, a hospital emergency service system is used as an example to illustrate them. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a novel single hidden layer feedforward neural network, called Constrained Extreme Learning Machine (CELM), is proposed based on Extreme Learning Machine (ELM). In CELM, the connection weights between the input layer and hidden neurons are randomly drawn from a constrained set of difference vectors of between-class samples, rather than an open set of arbitrary vectors. Therefore, the CELM is expected to be more suitable for discriminative tasks, whilst retaining other advantages of ELM. The experimental results are presented to show the high efficiency of the CELM, compared with ELM and some other related learning machines.

Heterogeneous many-cores can deliver high performance or energy efficiency. There are two orthogonal ways to improve performance: 1) scale-out by exploiting thread-level parallelism, and 2) scale-up by enabling core heterogeneity. Predicting the performance of such architecture is increasingly challenging. We propose a comprehensive performance model Amphisbaena, or Φ, built from two orthogonal functions α and β. Function α describes the scale-out speedup and function β handles the scale-up speedup. The Φ model can clearly tell not only the overall speedup of a given multithreading and core mapping strategy, but also how to improve the multithreading and core mapping, hence should be a promising performance predictor for future heterogenous many-cores. The results show that Φ model's error rate is within 12%, which is lower than state-of-the-art methods. We demonstrate the application of Φ model by introducing a heuristic scheduling algorithm, which outperforms the baselines by 13% on average.

Frequency spectrum is widely used to determine frequencies present in a signal, but it fails to extract information regarding deviations from Gaussianity and presence of phase relations. Higher order spectra, on the other hand, contain such information and have shown large potential in numerous disciplines including vibration based diagnostics. In this paper, the frequency spectrum and five approaches to the estimation of bicoherence are used to extract condition-specific features from vibration signals. The laboratory experiments were done using a test rig which includes an electric motor coupled to a water pump via a bevel gear. Acceleration was measured from the pump in different conditions which include normal operation, mechanical looseness, misalignment and cavitation. The feasibility of the tested approaches to the feature extraction problem is discussed.

Inductance is a basic electrical element that couples magnetic flux and current. In many applications the linear approximation of inductance provides sufficiently good results of analysis. In the presence of an additional DC bias magnetic field H_(DC), the observed B-H curve is forced to be moved from its unbiased state and an asymmetric nonlinearity of the targeted inductance is produced. Diagnostic method is proposed, which couples voltage harmonic phases and the direction of H_(DC) bias field by means of the LT Spice simulation. An experimental verification of the proposed technique is successfully accomplished, along with the settlement of the further research.

Decoy-state quantum key distribution (QKD) is a standard technique in current quantum cryptographic implementations. Unfortunately, existing experiments have two important drawbacks: the state preparation is assumed to be perfect without errors and the employed security proofs do not fully consider the finite-key effects for general attacks. These two drawbacks mean that existing experiments are not guaranteed to be proven to be secure in practice. Here, we perform an experiment that shows secure QKD with imperfect state preparations over long distances and achieves rigorous finite-key security bounds for decoy-state QKD against coherent attacks in the universally composable framework. We quantify the source flaws experimentally and demonstrate a QKD implementation that is tolerant to channel loss despite the source flaws. Our implementation considers more real-world problems than most previous experiments, and our theory can be applied to general discrete-variable QKD systems. These features constitute a step towards secure QKD with imperfect devices.
