data augmentation, as a critical strategy in deep learning, well improves the sample diversity for network training, leading to the obvious improvement of model generalization ability. Besides, automatic data augmentation, while sparking in image tasks, has attracted too little attention in video recognition task. Therefore, this work explores a novel group random augmentation (GRA) that automatically augments video data for recognition. GRA first collects 21 augmentation transformations to enrich the sample diversity, and then divides these transformations into four groups (i.e., pixel-transform, rigidtransform, erasing-transform, environment-transform) to reduce the excessive regularization caused by similar augmentation. To reduce the computational cost of finding the optimal setting, GRA adopts the combination form to select the optimal situation. For frames in the same video clip, GRA uses synchronous GRA. Additionally, the proposed GRA can be integrated into any existing video frameworks. To prove the effectiveness of GRA, we conduct experiments on two commonly used video action recognition benchmarks (Something-Something V1 & V2) and three typical frameworks (TSM, GSM, and TEA), whose results demonstrate GRA can improve performance in all cases without adding additional computational cost. © 2022 IEEE.

Considering the tumor aggressive nature and the significant changes in anatomical structure, aligning the preoperative and follow up scans of glioma patients remains a challenge due to the presence of regions with absent correspondence. To address this challenge, this work proposed a novel bidirectional unsupervised deformable image registration framework for image pairs with missing correspondence based on an auxiliary-image-aided intensity-consistency constraint (ICC) strategy. Specifically, for any fixed and moving image pairs, we introduced an auxiliary image and warped it directly to fixed/moving image or warped it twice through a transition of moving/fixed image. By comparing the difference between these warped images, the weighting maps to identify and exclude regions with absent correspondence between fixed and moving image pairs can be generated. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework, we combined it with several deep learning-based registration models and tested it on BraTS-Reg challenge dataset, the results demonstrated that the proposed ICC strategy can improve the registration performance for all the models, with the improvement of average target registration error (TRE) and success rate (SR) being up to 44.9% and 66.7%, respectively. Comparing against the best existing forward-backward consistency strategy for dealing with missing correspondence registration, our auxiliary-image-aided ICC strategy can also decrease average TRE by 2.9%, demonstrating the superiority of the proposed framework. The present work is not limited to the glioma images, it can be used to address the registration problems for any image pairs with absent correspondence or inconsistent intensity. © 2024 IEEE.

The proliferation of deep-learning-based mobile and IoT applications has driven the increasing deployment of edge datacenters equipped with domain-specific accelerators. The unprecedented computing power offered by these accelerators puts a heavy burden on the cooling system, motivating more potent cooling techniques like cold water cooling. However, we observe that cold water cooling results in significant energy waste in edge datacenters due to the fluctuating resource utilization both spatially and temporally. To tackle this issue, we propose the concept of "working smarter"by slowing down accelerators deliberately whenever possible and enabling warm water cooling during these times to achieve cooling efficiency. Based on this concept, we develop Hyco - a hybrid water cooling system tailored for edge datacenters running deep learning workloads. First, Hyco features a zone-based cooling architecture enabling dynamic switching between cold water and warm water cooling. Then, based on a lightweight latency estimation method, Hyco incorporates a learning-based scheduling scheme to determine "which"accelerator workers and "when"to slow down through an adaptive and intelligent power-latency trade-off for deep learning models. The simulation with real-world traces shows that Hyco reduces the cooling energy consumption by up to 34.74× while satisfying latency constraints more than 99% of the time for deep-learning-based applications. © 2016 IEEE.

Facial expression editing has a wide range of applications, such as emotion detection, human-computer interaction, and social entertainment. However, existing expression editing methods either fail to allow for fine-grained editing, resulting in unnatural and unrealistic facial expressions, or generate artifacts and blurs, leading to poor image quality. In this paper, we propose a novel framework called StyleAU, which is based on StyleGAN and facial action units, to address these problems. Our framework leverages the pre-trained StyleGAN prior knowledge to enable action unit editing of the face in the StyleGAN latent space, allowing precise expression editing. In addition, we use an encoder to extract multi-scale content features to achieve high-fidelity image reconstruction. Our approach qualitatively and quantitatively outperforms competing methods for action unit manipulation and expression editing.

Voice user interfaces (VUIs) have facilitated the efficient interactions between humans and machines through spoken commands. Since real-word acoustic scenes are complex, speech enhancement plays a critical role for robust VUI. Transformer and its variants, such as Conformer, have demonstrated cuttingedge results in speech enhancement. However, both of them suffers from the quadratic computational complexity with respect to the sequence length, which hampers their ability to handle long sequences. Recently a novel State Space Model called Mamba, which shows strong capability to handle long sequences with linear complexity, offers a solution to address this challenge. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid convolution-Mamba backbone, denoted as MambaDC, for speech enhancement. Our MambaDC marries the benefits of convolutional networks to model the local interactions and Mamba's ability for modeling long-range global dependencies. We conduct comprehensive experiments within both basic and state-of-the-art (SoTA) speech enhancement frameworks, on two commonly used training targets. The results demonstrate that MambaDC outperforms Transformer, Conformer, and the standard Mamba across all training targets. Built upon the current advanced framework, the use of MambaDC backbone showcases superior results compared to existing SoTA systems. Toward Democratized Generative AI in Next-Generation Mobile Edge Networks

The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, including large language models (LLMs), has brought transformative changes to various fields. However, deploying such advanced models on mobile and edge devices remains challenging due to their high computational, memory, communication, and energy requirements. To address these challenges, we propose a model-centric framework for democratizing generative AI deployment on mobile and edge networks. First, we comprehensively review key compact model strategies, such as quantization, model pruning, and knowledge distillation, and present key performance metrics to optimize generative AI for mobile deployment. Next, we provide a focused review of mobile and edge networks, emphasizing the specific challenges and requirements of these environments. We further conduct a case study demonstrating the effectiveness of these strategies by deploying LLMs on real mobile edge devices. Experimental results highlight the practicality of democratized LLMs, with significant improvements in generalization accuracy, hallucination rate, accessibility, and resource consumption. Finally, we discuss potential research directions to further advance the deployment of generative AI in resource-constrained environments. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

In the protection and restoration work of ancient buildings, the detection and analysis of the cracks and defects of the exterior walls of ancient buildings is a crucial task. In this paper, an improved YOLOv7 algorithm is proposed to detect the defects of ancient external walls, aiming to achieve efficient and accurate detection of the defects of ancient external walls. The method involves preprocessing the image using a rectangle clipping algorithm, graying the image using the maximum method, and denoising the image with a median filter. Next, the image is labeled using the LabelImg tool, and the data is split into training, validation, and test sets. During model training, a CBAM-Net module is inserted after several CBS modules in the backbone network, the GIOU loss function is replaced by CIOU, and feature task extraction is performed. The realized attention mechanism is added to the Yolov7 model. The results show that the mAP value of crack detection after the improved algorithm reaches 81.2%. In contrast to the initial YOLOv7 algorithm, the precision of the model has been boosted to 87.2%, exhibiting a 6.0% enhancement in accuracy and an 85.2% improvement in recall rate. The improved YOLOv7 crack detection algorithm reduces network calculation and improves crack classification and recognition ability. This approach is crucial in safeguarding ancient buildings as it enables varying levels of maintenance depending on the severity of cracks. © 2024 ACM.

Causal inference is capable of estimating the treatment effect (i.e., the causal effect of treatment on the outcome) to benefit the decision making in various domains. One fundamental challenge in this research is that the treatment assignment bias in observational data. To increase the validity of observational studies on causal inference, representation-based methods as the state-of-the-art have demonstrated the superior performance of treatment effect estimation. Most representation-based methods assume all observed covariates are pre-treatment (i.e., not affected by the treatment) and learn a balanced representation from these observed covariates for estimating treatment effect. Unfortunately, this assumption is often too strict a requirement in practice, as some covariates are changed by doing an intervention on treatment (i.e., post-treatment). By contrast, the balanced representation learned from unchanged covariates thus biases the treatment effect estimation. In light of this, we propose a deep treatment-adaptive architecture (DTANet) that can address the post-treatment covariates and provide a unbiased treatment effect estimation. Generally speaking, the contributions of this work are threefold. First, our theoretical results guarantee DTANet can identify treatment effect from observations. Second, we introduce a novel regularization of orthogonality projection to ensure that the learned confounding representation is invariant and not being contaminated by the treatment, meanwhile mediate variable representation is informative and discriminative for predicting the outcome. Finally, we build on the optimal transport and learn a treatment-invariant representation for the unobserved confounders to alleviate the confounding bias. © 2022, The Author(s).

One of the most important aspects of environmental sustainability is water quality monitoring. The ecology is impacted by poor water quality in addition to aquatic life. With the volume of data being collected from satellite systems, the issue of effectively and automatically extracting water bodies is growing more pressing. One of the most important things to do for managing and safeguarding water resources is to conduct extensive monitoring of water quality parameters, or WQPs. It is still difficult to monitor optically inactive WQPs in inland waters, such as total nitrogen (TN), ammoniacal nitrogen (AN), and total phosphorus (TP). Water quality (WQ) classification and prediction can be greatly enhanced with the use of artificial intelligence (AI). This research proposes novel method in healthcare detection by water quality analysis based on classification utilising ML model. Input is collected as healthcare dataset based on water quality as well as processed for noise removal and normalisation. The processed data features are extracted and classified utilising reinforcement Gaussian stacked layer network with variational fuzzy Markov basis neural network. In order to suggest best course of action for the water bodies, it is imperative that any study look into the spatiotemporal changes of the dominant water quality parameters (WQPs). WQP concentrations have typically been determined by extensive fieldwork. These findings could help identify and regulate non-point source pollution, offer a large-scale spatial picture of the water quality, and pinpoint vulnerable locations and times of water pollution. Experimental analysis is carried out for various water sample dataset in terms of detection accuracy, mean precision, recall, F-1 score and AUC. The proposed technique obtained 97% of detection accuracy, 95% of recall, 91% of F-1 score, 96% of AUC, and 94% of MAP. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
