The Internet of Things (IoT) applied solutions are changing the way the world perceives technology. IoT devices are now being used in a wide range of applications to transfer or share relevant information, hence reducing human interventions. With such widespread IoT solutions, security becomes a significant concern. Many of the IoT devices are vulnerable due to several reasons, including in-secure implementations, poor life cycle management, and inappropriate configurations, leading to an increase in the risk of these devices getting exposed and attacked. However, the current security approaches for detecting compromised IoT devices are inefficient, especially for zero-day attacks. Since no one knows how a new attack would look like, it will be useful to monitor and detect anomalies using accurate detection techniques. This work probes the possibility of detecting IoT network traffic anomalies using novelty detection techniques;thus, it can detect compromised IoT devices. One of this work’s main contributions is developing an IoT anomaly detection system named Behavioural Novelty Detection for IoT Infrastructure (BND-IoT). BND-IoT trains a neural network with novel selected behavioural features extracted from benign traffic only and then uses the novelty techniques to detect any unusual traffic patterns. We show that the presented approach effectively detects anomalies within IoT devices’ network traffic with a robust average F1-score of 96.7% and a low false rejection rate of 7%. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

This paper offers an overview of real-time analytics for smart cities proposing a framework for real-time data processing to improve the urban landscape. In the proposed system, large-scale data-streams can be processed using advanced machine learning algorithms, edge computing, and distributed data storage. Analyzing the outcomes of the evaluation procedure evidences reportable performance enhancements in the areas of smart city applications. Average traffic speed in transportation systems in the same period rose by 60%, concurrency and response to incidents likewise cut down by 40% and 53% respectively. The energy management systems responded with a 16% decrease in maximum energy load and the waste reduction was by 50%, while the costs savings was by 25% increase. Public safety applications alone realised a 60% decrease in the time taken to detect a crime and a 28.6% increase in efficiency on disaster resources with an overall spike in public satisfaction of 25.7%. Such findings improve the understanding of how this framework can increase urban efficiency, sustainability, and quality of life, which makes the solution usable in future smart city projects.

Most fairness assumptions used for verifying liveness properties are criticised for being too strong or unrealistic. On the other hand, justness, arguably the minimal fairness assumption required for the verification of liveness properties, is not preserved by classical semantic equivalences, such as strong bisimilarity. To overcome this deficiency, we introduce a finer alternative to strong bisimilarity, called enabling preserving bisimilarity. A new mobile attention economy has emerged with the explosive growth of short-video apps such as TikTok. In this internet market, three types of agents interact with each other: the platform, influencers, and advertisers. A short-video platform encourages its influencers to attract users by creating appealing content through short-form videos and allows advertisers to display their ads in short-form videos. There are two options for the advertisers: one is to bid for platform advert slots in a similar way to search engine auctions;the other is to pay an influencer to make engaging short videos and promote them through the influencer's channel. The second option will generate a higher conversion ratio if advertisers choose the right influencers whose followers match their target market. Although displaying influencer ads will generate less revenue, it is more engaging than platform ads, which is better for maintaining user traffic. Therefore, it is crucial for a platform to balance these factors by establishing a sustainable business agreement with its influencers and advertisers. In this paper, we develop a two-stage solution for a platform to maximize short-term revenue and long-term user traffic maintenance. In the first stage, we estimate the impact of user traffic generated by displaying influencer ads and characterize the user traffic the platform should allocate to influencers for overall revenue maximization. In the second stage, we devise an optimal (1 - 1/e)-competitive algorithm for ad slot allocation. To complement this analysis, we examine the ratio of the revenue generated by our online algorithm to the optimal offline revenue. Our simulation results show that this ratio is 0.94 on average, which is much higher than (1 - 1/e) and outperforms four baseline algorithms. © 2022 International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (***). Hypergraph Neural Network (HyperGNN) has emerged as a potent methodology for dissecting intricate multilateral connections among various entities. Current software/hardware solutions leverage a sequential execution model that relies on hyperedge and vertex indices for conducting standard matrix operations for HyperGNN inference. Yet, they are impeded by the dual challenges of redundant computation and irregular memory access overheads. This is primarily due to the frequent and repetitive access and updating of a number of feature vectors corresponding to the same hyperedges and vertices. To address these challenges, we propose the first redundancy-aware accelerator, RAHP, which enables high performance execution of HyperGNN inference. Specifically, we present a redundancy-aware asynchronous execution approach into the accelerator design for HyperGNN to reduce redundant computations and off-chip memory accesses. To unveil opportunities for data reuse and unlock the parallelism that existing HyperGNN solutions fail to capture, it prioritizes vertices with the highest degree as roots, prefetching other vertices along the hypergraph structure to capture the common vertices among multiple hyperedges, and synchronizing the computations of hyperedges and vertices in real-time. By such means, this facilitates the concurrent processing of relevant hyperedge and vertex computations of the common vertices along the hypergraph topology, resulting in smaller redundant computations overhead. Furthermore, by efficiently caching intermediate results of the common vertices, it curtails memory traffic and off-chip communications. To fully harness the performance potential of our proposed approach in the accelerator, RAHP incorporates a topology-driven data loading mechanism to minimize off-chip memory accesses on the fly. Machine fault diagnosis involves the intricate process of detecting and isolating faults, which is particularly challenging due to various sources of noise and the complex nature of the faults. In automatic fault diagnosis, feature engineering becomes daunting because of the time-varying characteristics of the fault signals. As artificial intelligence continues to advance, deep learning models have been increasingly employed for machine fault classification. However, a significant limitation of state-of-the-art models is their high computational complexity, making them unsuitable for deployment on portable devices. In this paper, a lightweight fault diagnosis model is proposed that consists of a self-attention SqueezeN et architecture along with a hybrid texture representation technique using empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and gammatone-spectrogram (GS) filter. In the model, initially, the dominant signal is extracted from the ID audio fault signals by discarding lower intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) from EMD and then the dominant signals are converted to 2D texture maps applying the GS filter. Then, the generated texture maps are fed to the modified self-attention SqueezeNet classifier, with reduced model width and depth as input for training and validation. In the experimental evaluation, two public benchmark datasets- ToyADMOS and MIMII are used to validate the model. Finally, the model classifies the machine audio faults using the trained features. The experimental results demonstrated that the hybrid EMD-Gammatone texture imaging outperforms the other state-of-the-art methods like MFCC, Gammatone, and Hilbert Huang Transform with a self-attention (SA) based SqueezeNet architecture. The EMD-Gammatone spectrum-based feature extraction accurately detected the faults by exhibiting an accuracy of 89.32% and 96.46% for MIMII and ToyADMOS datasets, respectively. It is significant to employ multiple autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to execute the underwater target tracking task collaboratively. However, it’s pretty challenging to meet various prerequisites utilizing traditional control methods. Therefore, we propose an effective two-stage learning from demonstrations training framework, FISHER, to highlight the adaptability of reinforcement learning (RL) methods in the multi-AUV underwater target tracking task, while addressing its limitations such as extensive requirements for environmental interactions and the challenges in designing reward functions. The first stage utilizes imitation learning (IL) to realize policy improvement and generate offline datasets. To be specific, we introduce multi-agent discriminator-actor-critic based on improvements of the generative adversarial IL algorithm and multi-agent IL optimization objective derived from the Nash equilibrium condition. Then in the second stage, we develop multi-agent independent generalized decision transformer, which analyzes the latent representation to match the future states of high-quality samples rather than reward function, attaining further enhanced policies capable of handling various scenarios. Besides, we propose a simulation to simulation demonstration generation procedure to facilitate the generation of expert demonstrations in underwater environments, which capitalizes on traditional control methods and can easily accomplish the domain transfer to obtain demonstrations. Extensive simulation experiments from multiple scenarios showcase that FISHER possesses strong stability, multi-task performance and capability of generalization. © 2024, CC BY.

Sparse Attention-driven Quality Prediction for Production Process Optimization in Digital Twins

In the process industry, long-term and efficient optimization of production lines requires real-time monitoring and analysis of operational states to fine-tune production line parameters. However, complexity in operational logic and intricate coupling of production process parameters make it difficult to develop an accurate mathematical model for the entire process, thus hindering the deployment of efficient optimization mechanisms. In view of these difficulties, we propose to deploy a digital twin of the production line by encoding its operational logic in a data-driven approach. By iteratively mapping the real-world data reflecting equipment operation status and product quality indicators in the digital twin, we adopt a quality prediction model for production process based on self-attention-enabled temporal convolutional neural networks. This model enables the data-driven state evolution of the digital twin. The digital twin takes a role of aggregating the information of actual operating conditions and the results of quality-sensitive analysis, which facilitates the optimization of process production with virtual-reality evolution. Leveraging the digital twin as an information-flow carrier, we extract temporal features from key process indicators and establish a production process quality prediction model based on the proposed deep neural network. Our operation experiments on a specific tobacco shredding line demonstrate that the proposed digital twin-based production process optimization method fosters seamless integration between virtual and real production lines. This integration achieves an average operating status prediction accuracy of over 98% and a product quality acceptance rate of over 96%. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Multi-behavioral recommender systems have emerged as a solution to address data sparsity and cold-start issues by incorporating auxiliary behaviors alongside target behaviors. However, existing models struggle to accurately capture varying user preferences across different behaviors and fail to account for diverse item preferences within behaviors. Various user preference factors (such as price or quality) entangled in the behavior may lead to sub-optimization problems. Furthermore, these models overlook the personalized nature of user behavioral preferences by employing uniform transformation networks for all users and items. To tackle these challenges, we propose the Disentangled Cascaded Graph Convolutional Network (Disen-CGCN), a novel multi-behavior recommendation model. Disen-CGCN employs disentangled representation techniques to effectively separate factors within user and item representations, ensuring their independence. In addition, it incorporates a multi-behavioral meta-network, enabling personalized feature transformation across user and item behaviors. Furthermore, an attention mechanism captures user preferences for different item factors within each behavior. By leveraging attention weights, we aggregate user and item embeddings separately for each behavior, computing preference scores that predict overall user preferences for items. Our evaluation of benchmark datasets demonstrates the superiority of Disen-CGCN over state-of-the-art models, showcasing an average performance improvement of 7.07% and 9.00% on respective datasets. These results highlight Disen-CGCN’s ability to effectively leverage multi-behavioral data, leading to more accurate recommendations.
