Differentially Private Deep Learning with Iterative Gradient Descent Optimization

Deep learning has achieved great success in various areas and its success is closely linked to the availability of massive data. But in general, a large dataset could include sensitive data and therefore the model should have the capability to avoid privacy leakage. To achieve this aim, many works apply the famous privacy framework named differential privacy into deep learning to preserve privacy. In this article, we propose a novel perturbed iterative gradient descent optimization (PIGDO) algorithm and prove that this algorithm satisfies the differential privacy. Besides, we propose a modified moments accountant (MMA) method to conduct the privacy analysis and obtain a tighter bound of privacy loss compared with the original moments accountant method. A number of experiments demonstrate that our optimization algorithm can not only improve the model accuracy and training speed, but also achieve better privacy guarantees over the state-of-the-art algorithm while reaching the equivalent accuracy. Cross-Domain Continual Learning for Edge Intelligence in Wireless ISAC Networks

In wireless networks with integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), edge intelligence (EI) is expected to be developed at edge devices (ED) for sensing user activities based on channel state information (CSI). However, due to the CSI being highly specific to users’ characteristics, the CSI-activity relationship is notoriously domain dependent, essentially demanding EI to learn sufficient datasets from various domains in order to gain cross-domain sensing capability. This poses a crucial challenge owing to the EDs’ limited resources, for which storing datasets across all domains will be a significant burden. In this paper, we propose the EdgeCL framework, enabling the EI to continually learn-then-discard each incoming dataset, while remaining resilient to catastrophic forgetting. We design a transformer-based discriminator for handling sequences of noisy and nonequispaced CSI samples. Besides, we propose a distilled core-set based knowledge retention method with robustness-enhanced optimization to train the discriminator, preserving its performance for previous domains while preventing future forgetting. Experimental evaluations show that EdgeCL achieves 89% of performance compared to cumulative training while consuming only 3% of its memory, mitigating forgetting by 79%. Generalized Local Optimality for Video Steganalysis in Motion Vector Domain

Video steganography that conceals secret data into motion vectors (MVs) is a popular covert communication technique. The local optimality of MVs is an intrinsic property in video coding, and any modifications to the MVs will inevitably destroy this optimality, making it a sensitive indicator of steganography. Thus the local optimality is commonly used to design features in video steganalysis. However, the local optimality in existing works is often estimated inaccurately or by using an unreasonable assumption, limiting its capability in steganalysis. In this paper, we propose to estimate the local optimality in a more reasonable and comprehensive fashion, and generalize the local optimality in two aspects. First, we generalize the local optimality from a static estimation to a dynamic one by considering the variability of predicted motion vectors (PMVs). Second, we generalize the local optimality from MV domain to PMV domain by leveraging the statistical anomaly of PMVs. Based on the two generalizations that ensure a more accurate estimation of local optimality from more views, we construct new types of steganalytic features and also propose feature symmetrization rules to reduce feature dimension. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed features, which achieve state-of-the-art accuracy and robustness under various conditions. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Machine learning (ML) models are widely deployed on edge nodes, such as mobile phones and edge servers, to power a wide range of AI applications over the web. Ensuring the integrity of these edge models is paramount, as they are subject to corruption caused by software/hardware exceptions and malicious tampering, which may undermine model performance, incur economic losses, and pose health risks. Existing data integrity mechanisms designed for files stored on disks cannot properly verify the integrity of models running in GPUs or mitigate the new integrity threats against edge models. This paper proposes EdgeThemis, a novel mechanism for verifying the integrity of edge models through sentinel verification. To enable verifiability for a model M, EdgeThemis embeds a sentinel backdoor and a verification module into M. Then, a challenger can send verification requests to the edge node hosting M to verify its integrity. Next, the sentinel activates the verification module to generate a unique integrity proof tied to the identity of the edge node for verification. Finally, the challenger can verify the integrity proof to detect model corruption. Theoretical analysis proves that EdgeThemis can properly mitigate potential integrity threats against edge models. Experiments demonstrate that EdgeThemis achieves a verification accuracy of 100.00% across various models and different types of model corruption with robustness against replay attacks, theft attacks, and replacement attacks. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

ExClique: An Express Consensus Algorithm for High-Speed Transaction Process in Blockchains

Proof of Authority (PoA) plays a pivotal role in blockchains for reaching consensus. Clique, which selects consensus nodes to generate blocks with a pre-determined order, is the most popular implementation of PoA due to its low communication overhead and energy consumption. However, our study unveils that the speed to process transactions by Clique is severely restricted by 1) the long communication delay of full blocks (each containing a certain number of transactions) between consensus nodes;and 2) occurrences of no-turn blocks, generated by no-turn nodes if an in-turn block generation fails. Consequently, Clique struggles to support distributed applications requiring a high transaction processing speed, e.g., online gaming. To overcome this deficiency, we propose an Express Clique (ExClique) algorithm by improving Clique from two perspectives: compacting blocks for broadcasting to shorten communication delay and prohibiting the occurrences of no-turn blocks. For performance evaluation, we implement ExClique by modifying Geth of Ethereum, the software implementing Clique, and deploy a permissioned blockchain network by using container technology. The experimental results show that ExClique achieves a substantial enhancement in transactions per second (TPS). Specifically, it boosts TPS by 2.25× in a typical network with 21 consensus nodes and an impressive 7.01× in a large-scale network with 101 consensus nodes when compared to Clique. © 2025, CC BY.

The real academic network belongs to a heterogeneous network, therefore, for the link prediction tasks, some information on the network may be lost if only using homogeneous network methods. In order to make good use of the rich semantic information in a heterogeneous network for better predicting the cooperative relationship between scholars, this paper proposes a cooperative relationship prediction (CoRP) model. The CoRP model includes the following three steps. Firstly, a structural feature extraction module is designed based on meta path by using the similarity metric function to measure the meta path similarity between scholars. Secondly, to overcome the defects that the existing methods usually ignore the attribute information on nodes, three attribute feature presentation functions are constructed to fully utilize the attribute information of scholars in the academic network. In the end, a machine learning classifier which combines the structural similarity and attribute similarity is utilized to learn each attribute feature and complete the task of cooperative relationship prediction. The experimental results reveal that compared with the benchmark method, the proposed method has better performance and interpretability with improvement from 3% to 10% of AUC value for the AMiner academic data set. © 2021 IEEE.

Accurate and efficient medical image analysis is required for modern healthcare applications, facilitating timely disease diagnosis and treatment. Considering the importance of optimization algorithms and deep learning methodologies, this work presents a novel approach, Grey Wolf Optimizer-Assisted Deep Neural Networks (GWO-DNN), for feature selection and classification in medical image analysis. The proposed framework utilizes the power of the Grey Wolf Optimizer to intelligently select the most relevant features from complex medical images. The selected features are then integrated into Deep Neural Networks, to create accurate models for medical image classification tasks. This integrated approach is designed to improve diagnostic accuracy and enhance patient care. The experimentation and evaluation, reveal that the proposed GWO-DNN based model for image analysis is more efficient than the existing methods.

In the medical realm, the pivotal role of pathological Whole Slide Images (WSIs) in detecting cancer, tracking disease progression, and evaluating treatment efficacy is indisputable. Nevertheless, the identification and quantification of lesion areas in these gigapixel WSIs present a significant challenge due to their substantial size and the intricate details of lesions. To address these issues, we developed a novel multi-resolution and multi-scale cross fusion network (M2CF-Net), adept at managing large-scale pathological WSIs and capturing both fine details and context. Our model particularly focuses on segmenting local lymphocyte infiltration lesions in pathological WSIs of patients diagnosed with primary Sjogren's syndrome. By employing a patch-based training approach and combining interconnected elements via a multi-scale fusion technique, we enhance our model's capacity to detect and analyze structures and features in minor salivary gland section WSIs. Extensive experiments and ablation studies conducted on real-world clinical datasets affirm our model's superior accuracy in identifying lymphocyte-infiltrated regions over state-of-the-art models, with a performance improvement of up to 4.32% in terms of the Dice Similarity Coefficient. © 2023 IEEE.

Evolutionary Neural Architecture Search for 3D Point Cloud Analysis

Neural architecture search (NAS) automates neural network design by using optimization algorithms to navigate architecture spaces, reducing the burden of manual architecture design. While NAS has achieved success, applying it to emerging domains, such as analyzing unstructured 3D point clouds, remains underexplored due to the data lying in non-Euclidean spaces, unlike images. This paper presents Success-History-based Self-adaptive Differential Evolution with a Joint Point Interaction Dimension Search (SHSADE-PIDS), an evolutionary NAS framework that encodes discrete deep neural network architectures to continuous spaces and performs searches in the continuous spaces for efficient point cloud neural architectures. Comprehensive experiments on challenging 3D segmentation and classification benchmarks demonstrate SHSADE-PIDS’s capabilities. It discovered highly efficient architectures with higher accuracy, significantly advancing prior NAS techniques. For segmentation on SemanticKITTI, SHSADE-PIDS attained 64.51% mean IoU using only 0.55M parameters and 4.5GMACs, reducing overhead by over 22-26X versus other top methods. For ModelNet40 classification, it achieved 93.4% accuracy with just 1.31M parameters, surpassing larger models. SHSADE-PIDS provided valuable insights into bridging evolutionary algorithms with neural architecture optimization, particularly for emerging frontiers like point cloud learning. © 2024, CC BY.
