Optimised EfficientNet for multi-class skin cancer diagnosis: integrating chaotic grey wolf algorithms

The detection of skin cancer holds paramount importance worldwide due to its impact on global health. While deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) have shown potential in this domain, current approaches often struggle with fine-grained variability in skin lesion features, imbalanced datasets and inadequate augmentation. The objectives of our study encompass building a model that not only enhances accuracy but also reduces training time and cost, improves dimensionality reduction during classification and segmentation, and is evaluated on larger datasets for robustness. We enhance the learning process using an improved nature-inspired optimisation algorithm tailored specifically for skin cancer classification tasks. This algorithm optimises model parameters to maximise classification accuracy while minimising computational overhead. Our proposed architecture leverages a gold standard dermatological image dataset meticulously curated and validated by experts. This dataset spans eight distinct classes, including actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, nevus, and others, ensuring a diverse representation of skin conditions. The balanced class distribution in the training and test sets enables fair evaluation and robustness assessment of our deep learning models. The developed algorithm showcases novelty in its approach, contributing to advancements in early skin cancer detection technologies. This study introduces an optimised deep learning model designed for the early detection of skin cancer, achieving a notable accuracy of 97.48%. Our study aims to contribute significantly to the medical field by providing a reliable and efficient tool for dermatologists and healthcare practitioners to assist in diagnosing skin conditions accurately and promptly, ultimately improving patient outcomes and healthcare efficiency. © (2025), (Indian Academy of sciences). Continual learning aims to progressively acquire new knowledge while retaining previously learned information, addressing the challenge of catastrophic forgetting. This paper introduces a novel continual learning method, called SPrint, which is the first research effort to devise the principles of self-paced learning for solving continual learning problems. SPrint dynamically adapts the complexity of samples for both new and previous tasks in response to the model's current learning capacity. It employs a self-paced loss function for sampling new tasks and a forgetting occurrence for sampling previous tasks with replay memory. Through extensive empirical evaluation, we demonstrate that SPrint consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods in various continual learning benchmarks. This study presents an adaptive online learning method for text classification under distribution shifts. We formulate a typical neural network-based text classification model as multiple logical modules. By leveraging the characteristics of the modules, we introduce three novel indicators to effectively measure the degree of dynamic distribution shifts without evaluating the model. To enhance online learning, we tactically trade off between learning efficiency and accuracy based on distribution shifts measured in real time. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first effort to adapt the model to the preference of learning efficiency or accuracy for online text classification. Extensive experiments on real-world streaming text datasets show that our method outperforms the best static update strategy and state-of-the-art online text classification models. This study addresses the challenges faced in personalized tutoring within large-scale programming courses, such as significant ability gaps among students, limited available resources, among others. For these reasons, we proposed an intelligent programming assistant, ProgMate, based on large language models (LLMs). Benefitting from the robust understanding and learning capabilities of LLM, ProgMate not only comprehensively monitors the learning process, but can also surpass human teaching in aspects such as intelligent assignment grading, identification of knowledge gaps, and assessment of learning abilities. ProgMate embodies a new 4-A digital teaching paradigm, characterized by its ability to provide precise guidance with anything, to anyone, anywhere, at any time, with features like 'omnipresence', 'adaptive guidance' and 'customization'. It facilitates the organic integration of collective teaching and individualized guidance, continuous learning, and long-term development, as well as resource efficiency and precision nurturing, offering a viable path and empirical support for the digital transformation of future education. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper aims to address the difficulties faced by novice programmers in grasping code structure and execution flow, improving programming thinking, and pinpointing code errors with accuracy. It proposes providing students with program behavior diagrams based on large language models (LLMs) and visualization techniques to achieve personalized guidance. Specifically, these program behavior diagrams include programming thinking visualization diagrams and code vulnerability visualization diagrams. A programming thinking visualization diagram employs static code analysis to gather code structure information, combined with the structured chain-of-thought method to collectively optimize the LLM. This enables the LLM to explain each interpretable part of the code from top to bottom, detailing the programming concepts, and displaying them on a modularized code structure diagram. The code vulnerability visualization diagram primarily utilizes the fine-tuned LLM, optimizing it based on program analysis and clustering analysis methods to accurately identify vulnerabilities in student code and display them on a code flow diagram. Its feature is to visually display to students the error location, error information, and the impact of errors on program flow, rather than providing the programming answers. Lastly, through experiments and statistical analysis of actual teaching data, this paper serves a demonstration that the enhanced models used in the visualization diagram generation process have a noticeable effect on mainstream LLMs, and that visualization diagrams hold significant value for students at different stages of learning. © 2024 IEEE.

Prime editing(PE)is a versatile genome editing tool without the need for double-stranded DNA breaks or donor DNA templates,but is limited by low editing *** previously fused the M-MLV reverse transcriptase to the Cas9 nickase,generating the PE2(v1)system,but the editing efficiency of this system is still *** we develop different versions of PE2 by adding the 50-to-30 exonuclease at different positions of the nCas9-M-MLV RT fusion ***2(v2),in which the T5 exonuclease fused to the N-terminus of the nCas9-MMLV fusion protein enhances prime editing efficiency of base substitutions,deletions,and insertions at several genomic sites by 1.7-to 2.9-fold in plant cells compared to PE2(v1).The improved editing efficiency of PE2(v2)is further confirmed by generating increased heritable prime edits in stable transgenic plants compared to the previously established PE-P1,PE-P2,and PPE *** PE2(v2),we generate herbicide-resistant rice by simultaneously introducing mutations causing amino acid substitutions at two target *** PE efficiency is further improved by combining PE2(v2)and *** together,the increased genome editing efficiency of PE2(v2)developed in this study may enhance the applications of PE in plants.

Machine learning (ML) models have been used in functional neuroimaging for wide-ranging tasks, ranging from disease diagnosis to disease prognosis. There have been successive functional connectivity-based ML studies focused on improving model performances for disease detection. An increasing number of such studies use their trained models to detect and evaluate salient features that could be potential biomarkers of these neuro-logical conditions. The evaluation of these salient features is often qualitative and limited to cross-referencing existing literature for similar findings. In this study, we present objective quantitative metrics to evaluate the robustness of these salient features. Building upon existing generic evaluation metrics, we propose metrics that capture topological properties known to be characteristic of brain functional connectomes. Using existing and newly proposed measures on a set of baselines and state-of-the-art graph neural networks (GNN) models, we found that when GNNExplainer is used with models that incorporate attention, the scores produced are relatively more robust than other combinations. On datasets of patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), our proposed metrics highlighted that salient features identified in both disorders are highly involved in functional specialization, while salient ASD features expressed stronger functional integration than ADHD. We package these existing and novel metrics together in the RE-CONFIRM framework that holds promise to set the foundations for the quantitative evaluation of salient features detected by future studies. © 2024 IEEE.

Pushing artificial intelligence(AI) from central cloud to network edge has reached board consensus in both industry and academia for materializing the vision of artificial intelligence of things(AIoT) in the sixth-generation(6G) era. This gives rise to an emerging research area known as edge intelligence, which concerns the distillation of human-like intelligence from the vast amount of data scattered at the wireless network edge. Typically, realizing edge intelligence corresponds to the processes of sensing, communication,and computation, which are coupled ingredients for data generation, exchanging, and processing, ***, conventional wireless networks design the three mentioned ingredients separately in a task-agnostic manner, which leads to difficulties in accommodating the stringent demands of ultra-low latency, ultra-high reliability, and high capacity in emerging AI applications like auto-driving and metaverse. This thus prompts a new design paradigm of seamlessly integrated sensing, communication, and computation(ISCC) in a taskoriented manner, which comprehensively accounts for the use of the data in downstream AI tasks. In view of its growing interest, this study provides a timely overview of ISCC for edge intelligence by introducing its basic concept, design challenges, and enabling techniques, surveying the state-of-the-art advancements, and shedding light on the road ahead.

Uncertainty-Calibrated Test-Time Model Adaptation without Forgetting

Test-time adaptation (TTA) seeks to tackle potential distribution shifts between training and testing data by adapting a given model w.r.t. any testing sample. This task is particularly important when the test environment changes frequently. Although some recent attempts have been made to handle this task, we still face two key challenges: 1) prior methods have to perform backpropagation for each test sample, resulting in unbearable optimization costs to many applications;2) while existing TTA solutions can significantly improve the test performance on out-of-distribution data, they often suffer from severe performance degradation on in-distribution data after TTA (known as catastrophic forgetting). To this end, we have proposed an Efficient Anti-Forgetting Test-Time Adaptation (EATA) method which develops an active sample selection criterion to identify reliable and non-redundant samples for test-time entropy minimization. To alleviate forgetting, EATA introduces a Fisher regularizer estimated from test samples to constrain important model parameters from drastic changes. However, in EATA, the adopted entropy loss consistently assigns higher confidence to predictions even when the samples are underlying uncertain, leading to overconfident predictions that underestimate the data uncertainty. To tackle this, we further propose EATA with Calibration (EATA-C) to separately exploit the reducible model uncertainty and the inherent data uncertainty for calibrated TTA. Specifically, we compare the divergence between predictions from the full network and its sub-networks to measure the reducible model uncertainty, on which we propose a test-time uncertainty reduction strategy with divergence minimization loss to encourage consistent predictions instead of overconfident ones. To further re-calibrate predicting confidence on different samples, we utilize the disagreement among predicted labels as an indicator of the data uncertainty.
