FERMixNet: An Occlusion Robust Facial Expression Recognition Model with Facial Mixing Augmentation and Mid-Level Representation Learning

Facial expressions can provide a better understanding of people's mental status and attitudes towards specific things. However, facial occlusion in real world is an unfavorable phenomenon that greatly affects the performance of facial expression recognition models. Recent works addressing the occlusion problem have primarily relied on attention mechanisms or occlusion discarding methods that focus on non-occluded regions of the face. However, these methods have not achieved a good balance between occlusion robustness and model efficiency. In this paper, we propose a simple and efficient model, called FERMixNet, for occluded facial expression recognition. The model incorporates a novel facial mixing augmentation strategy (FERMix) that generates new training samples by simulating real-world facial occlusion and preserving high expression-related semantic information. By co-training the original and newly generated samples, the model's occlusion robustness is improved without increasing its complexity during inference. Additionally, to further enhance the model's occlusion robustness, we include mid-level representation learning in the network to learn the discriminative non-occluded local features of the samples with low computational cost. Extensive experiments on four public facial occlusion datasets: Occlusion-RAF-DB, Occlusion-FERPlus and FED-RO show that the proposed model achieves state-of-the-art results which demonstrates the good robustness of our method for occluded facial expression recognition. Meanwhile, the proposed model also achieves state-of-the-art results on the in-the-wild facial expression datasets RAF-DB, AffectNet-8, and AffectNet-7. It proves that the proposed model has good application prospects in real world. © 2010-2012 IEEE.

Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope(LAMOST) has completed the observation of nearly 20 million celestial objects,including a class of spectra labeled “Unknown.” Besides low signal-to-noise ratio,these spectra often show some anomalous features that do not work well with current *** this paper,a total of 637,889 “Unknown” spectra from LAMOST DR5 are selected,and an unsupervised-based analytical framework of “Unknown” spectra named SA-Frame(Spectra Analysis-Frame) is provided to explore their origins from different *** SA-Frame is composed of three parts:NAPC-Spec clustering,characterization and origin ***,NAPC-Spec(Nonparametric density clustering algorithm for spectra) characterizes different features in the “unknown” spectrum by adjusting the influence space and divergence distance to minimize the effects of noise and high dimensionality,resulting in 13 ***,characteristic extraction and representation of clustering results are carried out based on spectral lines and continuum,where these 13 types are characterized as regular spectra with low S/Ns,splicing problems,suspected galactic emission signals,contamination from city light and un-gregarious type ***,a preliminary analysis of their origins is made from the characteristics of the observational targets,contamination from the sky,and the working status of the *** results would be valuable for improving the overall data quality of large-scale spectral surveys.

Social video anomaly is an observation in video streams that does not conform to a common pattern of dataset's behaviour. Social video anomaly detection plays a critical role in applications from e-commerce to e-Iearning. Traditionally, anomaly detection techniques are applied to find anomalies in video broadcasting. However, they neglect the live social video streams which contain interactive talk, speech, or lecture with audience. In this paper, we propose a generic framework for effectively online detecting Anomalies Over social Video LI ve Streaming (AOVLIS). Specifically, we propose a novel deep neural network model called Coupling Long Short-Term Memory (CLSTM) that adaptively captures the history behaviours of the presenters and audience, and their mutual interactions to predict their behaviour at next time point over streams. Then we well integrate the CLSTM with a decoder layer, and propose a new reconstruction error-based scoring function REI A to calculate the anomaly score of each video segment for anomaly detection. After that, we propose a novel model update scheme that incrementally maintains CLSTM and decoder. Moreover, we design a novel upper bound and ADaptive Optimisation Strategy (ADOS) for improving the efficiency of our solution. Extensive experiments are conducted to prove the superiority of AOVLIS. © 2024 IEEE.

BERD+: A Generic Sequential Recommendation Framework by Eliminating Unreliable data with Item- and Attribute-level Signals

A preliminary work of our study was published at IJCAI’21 [47], which is substantially extended in the following aspects: (1) In Section 1, we analyze the necessity of introducing item attributes for detecting unreliable instances, together with the problems and challenges that attributes may bring in. (2) In Section 2, we add discussions about the limitations of existing attribute-aware recommender systems (Section 2.2) and denoising methods (Section 2.3) in the context of detecting unreliable instances. (3) In Section 4.2, we further conduct an in-depth analysis at the attribute level to demonstrate the capability of attributes for rectifying instance loss and uncertainty, as well as the disturbance caused by attributes. (4) We generalize BERD to a generic framework BERD+ in Section 5.1, equipped with novel modules, i.e., HU-GCN (Section 5.2) and EPE (Section 5.4), which properly incorporate item attributes while reducing their disturbance for rectifying instance uncer tainty (Section 5.5) and loss (Section 5.6). The generic BERD+ can be flexibly plugged into existing SRSs for performance enhanced recommendation via eliminating unreliable data. (5) In Section 6.2, we apply our BERD+ framework to seven state-of-the-art SRSs on five real-world datasets to illustrate its superiority. (6) To avoid unfair comparison caused by item attributes, we build and compare with the baseline that combines the original BERD and an advanced attribute-aware recommender system, KSR [19]. (7) For more comprehensive comparison, in Section 6.2.2, we compare BRED+ with two state-of-the-art denoising approaches;in Section 6.2.3, to examine the efficacy of HU-GCN and EPE, we compare HU-GCN with various attribute embedding techniques, i.e., variants of graph neural networks, and compare EPE with different attribute fusing methods, i.e., adding, concatenation, and weighted sum. Image moments, as a global feature descriptor for images, have become a powerful tool for pattern recognition and image analysis. Most of the currently existing fractional-order image moments are polynomial-based. Three novel moments, namely Zernike fractional Fourier moment, Merlin fractional Fourier moment, and exponential fractional Fourier moment, combined with classical moments and fractional Fourier transform, are introduced based on angular functions. Additionally, we propose a zero watermarking algorithm based on these moments. We present robustness and comparative analysis experiments, including the effects of noise, filtering, rotation, and scaling. The experimental results demonstrate that the zero watermarking algorithm utilizing fractional-order moments can effectively withstand image processing attacks and geometric attacks. We consider an extension of the symmetric traveling salesman problem with generalized latency that explicitly models uncertainty. The stochastic traveling salesman problem with generalized latency (STSP-GL) aims to choose a subset of nodes of an undirected graph and determines a Hamiltonian tour among those nodes, minimizing an objective function that is a weighted combination of route design and passenger routing costs. These nodes are selected to ensure that a predefined percentage of uncertain passenger demand is served with a given probability. We formulate the STSP-GL as a stochastic program and propose a branch-and-price algorithm for solving its deterministic equivalent. We also develop a local search approach with which we improve the performance of the branch-and-price approach. We assess the efficiency of the proposed methods on a set of instances from the literature. We demonstrate that the proposed methods outperform a known benchmark, improving upper bounds by up to 85% and lower bounds by up to 55%. Finally, we show that solutions of the stochastic model are both more cost-effective and robust than those of the deterministic model. © 2024 INFORMS.

mVulPreter: A Multi-Granularity Vulnerability Detection System With Interpretations

Due to the powerful automatic feature extraction, deep learning-based vulnerability detection methods have evolved significantly in recent years. However, almost all current work focuses on detecting vulnerabilities at a single granularity (i.e., slice-level or function-level). In practice, slice-level vulnerability detection is fine-grained but may contain incomplete vulnerability details. Function-level vulnerability detection includes full vulnerability semantics but may contain vulnerability-unrelated statements. Meanwhile, they pay more attention to predicting whether the source code is vulnerable and cannot pinpoint which statements are more likely to be vulnerable. In this paper, we design mVulPreter, a multi-granularity vulnerability detector that can provide interpretations of detection results. Specifically, we propose a novel technique to effectively blend the advantages of function-level and slice-level vulnerability detection models and output the detection results' interpretation only by the model itself. We evaluate mVulPreter on a dataset containing 5,310 vulnerable functions and 7,601 non-vulnerable functions. The experimental results indicate that mVulPreter outperforms existing state-of-the-art vulnerability detection approaches (i.e., Checkmarx, FlawFinder, RATS, TokenCNN, StatementLSTM, SySeVR, and Devign). Epidemic models have become increasingly useful, especially in the wake of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the crucial role of human behavior in the spread of disease. There has been a recent rise in the usage and popularity of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), such as ChatGPT especially with its ability to mimic human behavior. In this study, we demonstrate a novel application of GenAI for epidemic modeling. We employed GenAI for creating agents living in a hypothetical town in simulations and simulating their behavior within the context of an ongoing pandemic. We performed a series of simulations to quantify the impact of agent traits and the availability of information for health condition, virus, and government guidelines on the disease spread patterns in terms of peak time and epidemic duration. We also characterized the most influential factors in agents’ decision-making using random forest model. © 2024 IEEE.

Fine extraction of multi-crop planting area based on deep learning with Sentinel- 2 time-series data

Accurate and timely access to the spatial distribution of crops is crucial for sustainable agricultural development and food security. However, extracting multi-crop areas based on high-resolution time-series data and deep learning still faces challenges. Therefore, this study aims to provide an effective model for multi-crop classification using high-resolution remote sensing time-series data. We designed two deep learning models based on convolutional neural network-long short-term memory (CNN-LSTM) and bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM). The monthly synthetic time series of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from Sentinel-2 data will be used as input features to extract the multi-crop planting area in Shandong province’s northwestern, southwestern, and eastern regions. The results showed that deep learning models achieved higher accuracy compared to the random forest (RF) and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) models, with CNN-LSTM achieving the highest overall accuracy of 96.48%. At the county level, the coefficients of determination (R2) for the CNN-LSTM model were 0.91 for wheat, 0.88 for maize, and 0.73 for spring cotton. This study demonstrates that the CNN-LSTM model combined with monthly synthetic time-series NDVI provides a feasible approach for accurately mapping high-resolution multi-crop planting areas and also contributes significantly to decision support and resource management in agricultural production. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.
