Challenges and opportunities for enterprise transformation research

This article summarizes the activity of the First International Workshop on Enterprise Transformation, hosted by the Tennenbaum Institute at the Georgia Institute of Technology in March 2013. The workshop brought together researchers (faculty and students) from a wide range of disciplines (e.g., engineering, management, computing, and social science) and institutions to (1) discuss and define the scholarly challenges and opportunities for enterprise transformation research and (2) facilitate the development of an emerging interdisciplinary academic community. The results of the workshop highlight the particular complexities of conducting enterprise transformation research in an academic context and identify both near-and long-term opportunities for impactful future research. © IIE, INCOSE.

In this paper, two pricing mechanisms in electricity markets are studied, the locational marginal price (LMP) and the extended locational marginal price (ELMP). The effects of these two pricing mechanisms are compared with regards to the allocation of the market surplus between generators and loads. The two pricing mechanisms are also analyzed with regards to the required uplift payments. The results confirm that uplift payments are reduced under the ELMP pricing mechanism. However, ELMP does not appropriately represent the marginal market clearing price for the market dispatch solution.

Quantum chaotic scattering in graphene systems in the absence of invariant classical dynamics

Quantum chaotic scattering is referred to as the study of quantum behaviors of open Hamiltonian systems that exhibit transient chaos in the classical limit. Traditionally a central issue in this field is how the elements of the scattering matrix or their functions fluctuate as a system parameter, e.g., the electron Fermi energy, is changed. A tacit hypothesis underlying previous works was that the underlying classical phase-space structure remains invariant as the parameter varies, so semiclassical theory can be used to explain various phenomena in quantum chaotic scattering. There are, however, experimental situations where the corresponding classical chaotic dynamics can change characteristically with some physical parameter. Multiple-terminal quantum dots are one such example where, when a magnetic field is present, the classical chaotic-scattering dynamics can change between being nonhyperbolic and being hyperbolic as the Fermi energy is changed continuously. For such systems semiclassical theory is inadequate to account for the characteristics of conductance fluctuations with the Fermi energy. To develop a general framework for quantum chaotic scattering associated with variable classical dynamics, we use multi-terminal graphene quantum-dot systems as a prototypical model. We find that significant conductance fluctuations occur with the Fermi energy even for fixed magnetic field strength, and the characteristics of the fluctuation patterns depend on the energy. We propose and validate that the statistical behaviors of the conductance-fluctuation patterns can be understood by the complex eigenvalue spectrum of the generalized, complex Hamiltonian of the system which includes self-energies resulted from the interactions between the device and the semi-infinite leads. As the Fermi energy is increased, complex eigenvalues with extremely smaller imaginary parts emerge, leading to sharp resonances in the conductance.

3D virtual reality, including the current generation of multi-user virtual worlds, has had a long history of use in education and training, and it experienced a surge of renewed interest with the advent of Second Life in 2003. What followed shortly after were several years marked by considerable hype around the use of virtual worlds for teaching, learning and research in higher education. For the moment, uptake of the technology seems to have plateaued, with academics either maintaining the status quo and continuing to use virtual worlds as they have previously done or choosing to opt out altogether. This paper presents a brief review of the use of virtual worlds in the Australian and New Zealand higher education sector in the past and reports on its use in the sector at the present time, based on input from members of the Australian and New Zealand Virtual Worlds Working Group. It then adopts a forward-looking perspective amid the current climate of uncertainty, musing on future directions and offering suggestions for potential new applications in light of recent technological developments and innovations in the area. © 2013 Sue Gregory.

In group decision making problems, given the importance of obtaining an accepted solution by the whole group, the consensus has attained a great attention and it is virtually a major goal of these problems. Consensus, as traditionally meant to be a full and unanimous agreement, is often not reachable in practice. A more realistic approach is to use softer consensus measures, which assess the consensus degree in a more flexible way, and therefore reflect the large spectrum of possible partial agreements, guiding the consensus process until widespread agreement is achieved among experts. In particular, the interpretation of the consensus based on the concept of fuzzy majority has been used in the most of the consensus models proposed in the literature, as it is more human-consistent and suitable for reflecting human perceptions of the meaning of consensus. However, there are still some open questions to be addressed. In this paper, we are going to highlight some issues in order to focus researcher's attention on new problems that arise when using consensus models based on soft consensus measures in real-world applications.

The kernel is a non-parametric estimation method of the probability density function of a random variable based on a finite sample of data. The estimated function is smooth and level of smoothness is defined by a parameter represented by h, called bandwidth or window. In this simulation work we compare, by the use of mean square error and bias, the performance of the normal kernel in smoothing the empirical ROC curve, using various amounts of bandwidth. In this sense, we intend to compare the performance of the normal kernel, for various values of bandwidth, in the smoothing of ROC curves generated from Normal distributions and evaluate the variation of the mean square error for these samples. Two methodologies were followed: replacing the distribution functions of positive cases (abnormal) and negative (normal), on the definition of the ROC curve, smoothed by nonparametric estimators obtained via the kernel estimator and the smoothing applied directly to the ROC curve. We conclude that the empirical ROC curve has higher standard error when compared with the smoothed curves, a small value for the bandwidth favors a higher standard error and a higher value of the bandwidth increasing bias estimation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

Optimizing Coverage Performance of Multiple Random Path-planning Robots

This paper presents a new approach to the multi-agent coverage path-planning problem. An efficient multi-robot coverage algorithm yields a coverage path for each robot, such that the union of all paths generates an almost full coverage of the terrain and the total coverage time is minimized. The proposed algorithm enables multiple robots with limited sensor capabilities to perform efficient coverage on a shared territory. Each robot is assigned to an exclusive route which enables it to carry out its tasks simultaneously, e.g., cleaning assigned floor area with minimal path overlapping. It is very difficult to cover all free space without visiting some locations more than once, but the occurrence of such events can be minimized with efficient algorithms. The proposed multi-robot coverage strategy directs a number of simple robots to cover an unknown area in a systematic manner. This is based on footprint data left by the randomized path-planning robots previously operated on that area. The developed path-planning algorithm has been applied to a simulated environment and robots to verify its effectiveness and performance in such an application. © Md Ahsan Habib et al. 2012.

Inexpensive wireless sensors can be embedded in structural materials to detect defects. These sensors provide in-situ diagnosis of the system's health, thus invaluable information to decision makers for system maintenance and repair. For example, Iamb wave sensors that are embedded in carbon fiber composites can monitor the material integrity by detecting and quantifying fiber delaminations and breakages. Although they are relatively easy to be deployed, their lifetimes are limited due to power consumption and they cannot be replaced without interrupting the operation of system. In this paper, we discuss a sampling method that is based on the material's degradation model for activating sensors and collecting health information. We are interested in predicting the time of failure with a few numbers of signals and with statistical efficiency. Our method is good for the in-situ health monitoring, where the system's failure time is of concern and the sensor's power conservation is required.

This paper proposes a biometric authentication system which use password based and behavioural traits (typing behaviours) authentication technology to establish user's identity on a mobile phone. The proposed system can work on the latest smart phone platform. It uses mobile devices to capture user's keystroke data and transmit it to web server. The authentication engine will establish if a user is genuine or fraudulent. In addition, a multiplier of the standard deviation "a" has been defined which aims to achieve the balance between security and usability. Experimental results indicate that the developed authentication system is highly reliable and very secure with an equal error rate is below 7.5%. © 2012 IEEE.
