In this paper, we propose a control scheme that allows generic commercial multirotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to infer human intent from physical interaction. Humans apply forces by touching it or pulling a nylon string attached to the body frame of the vehicle. The estimations of these forces, obtained via a square root unscented Kalman filter, are used by an admittance controller to generate a reference trajectory such that the vehicle reacts as a desired mass-damper system. To track this trajectory, the differential flatness property of the multirotor dynamic model is exploited. This, in fact, allows the generation of any possible kind of input required by the on-board controller supplied by the manufacturer. We validate our results experimentally on a Parrot Bebop 2 quadrotor, a commercially available UAV.

Exploring the applicability of achievement goal theory in participatory design, we present a case study where ten students from two primary schools in Namibia and Finland jointly co-designed an online educational game. The aim of the case study was to identify participating students’ achievement goals, as well as exploring their perceived goal approximations, achievement emotions, and engagement throughout the three-month co-design study. Furthermore, we explored the reflection of achievement goals within the co-designed product. Participants’ achievement goals were identified with an open-ended written task and a q-sort task at the beginning of the study. Throughout the study, students self-reported on their emotions and engagement, as well as on the extent to which the co-design sessions aligned with achievement goals. At the end of the study interviews were held with the students and their teachers. Based on new insights emerging from our findings and reflections, we delineate suggestions concerning the utilization of achievement goal theory within participatory design projects. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Image segmentation is widely used as a fundamental step for various image processing applications. This paper focuses on improving the famous image thresholding method named Otsu's algorithm. Based on the fact that threshold acquired by Otsu's algorithm tends to be closer to the class with larger intraclass variance when the foreground and background have large intraclass variance difference, an improved strategy is proposed to adjust the threshold bias. We analysed the relationship between pixel greyscale value and the change of cumulative pixel number, and selected the ratio of pixel grey level value to a certain cumulative pixel number as the adjusted threshold. Experiments using typical testing images were set up to verify the proposed method both quantitatively and qualitatively. Two widely used metrics named misclassification error (ME) and dice similarity coefficient (DSC) were adopted for quantitative evaluation, and both quantitative and qualitative results indicated that the proposed algorithm could better segment the testing images and get competitive misclassification error and DSC values compared with Otsu's method and its improved versions proposed by Hu and Gong (2009) and Xu et al. (2011), and the time consumption of our method can be significantly reduced. © 2020 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

This paper aims to simulate performance efficiency of carrier suppressed non return to zero line coding based FSO transceiver systems under light rain conditions with amplification units at 40 Gbps. The max. Q, BER and total optical power are simulated and demonstrated after FSO channel and PIN Photodetector Receiver under light rain weather conditions at maximum reach of 1.2 km at 10 Gbps. As well as the max. Q Factor variations versus max reach variations are clarified after PIN photodetector receiver under light rain weather conditions at 10, 40 Gbps with/without amplification units. Air quality monitoring and prediction in many industrial and urban areas, it has become one of the most important activities. Owing to different types of pollution, air quality is heavily affected. With increasing air pollution, efficient air quality monitoring models is to be implemented; these models gather data on the concentration of air pollutants. In a proposed approach, to solve three problems- prediction, interpolation and feature analysis, previously these problems were solved using three different models but now in the proposed system can solve these three problems in one model i.e Air Pollutant Prediction. This approach relates to unlabeled spatiotemporal data to enhance interpolation efficiency and air quality prediction. Experiments to test the proposed solution based on the real-time data sources collected by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), India. The goal of this research paper is to explore various strategies based on machine learning techniques for monitoring and predicating the air quality.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has shown great promise in electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis and cardiovascular disease detection. However, developing a general AI-ECG model has been challenging due to inter-individual variability and the diversity of ECG diagnoses, limiting existing models to specific diagnostic tasks and datasets. Moreover, current AI-ECG models struggle to achieve comparable performance between single-lead and 12-lead ECGs, limiting the application of AI-ECG to portable and wearable ECG devices. To address these limitations, we introduce an ECG Foundation Model (ECGFounder), a general-purpose model that leverages real-world ECG annotations from cardiology experts to broaden the diagnostic capabilities of ECG analysis. ECGFounder is trained on over 10 million ECGs with 150 label categories from the Harvard- Emory ECG Database, enabling comprehensive cardiovascular disease diagnosis through ECG analysis. The model is designed to be both effective out-of-the-box and fine-tunable for downstream tasks, maximizing usability. More importantly, we extend its application to single-lead ECGs, enabling complex condition diagnoses and supporting various downstream tasks in mobile and remote monitoring scenarios. Experimental results demonstrate that ECGFounder achieves expert-level performance on internal validation sets for both 12-lead and single-lead ECGs, while also exhibiting strong classification performance and generalization across various diagnoses on external validation sets. When fine-tuned, ECGFounder outperforms baseline models in demographics detection, clinical event detection, and cross-modality cardiac rhythm diagnosis. ECGFounder not only enhances existing cardiovascular diagnostics capabilities but also facilitates integration into mobile and remote monitoring devices, enabling continuous, real-time cardiac health monitoring crucial for early detection and management of chronic heart conditions. Normally, we have the traffic signal lights programmed for a specific interval of moment. But here produce traffic light signals depending on the density of traffic, on the specific moment. Here will keep few IR sensors apart from the highway to monitor the traffic density. The timing of the traffic signals will be altered depending on the signals produced from the sensors. The output of the sensors is provided to a comparator for digitizing the output. This system can be used to find the nearby ambulance services and nearby hospitals using GPS modem so that the necessary treatments can be given to the patient as soon as possible. When the ambulance goes to any traffic signal in an emergency, the key exchange method takes place, i.e. the other signals will be switched off immediately and all other signals will be red and subsequently replaced by green signals. In smart street light system make use of automated system which will automatically control the operation of street lights using LDR and timers. When a person or a vehicle enters the road they are sensed by the IR sensors and the light automatically glows, and when the person leaves the road the lights are switched off automatically. This avoids unnecessary power wastage during the night when there is no sign of pedestrian or vehicles.

With the widespread usage of smartphones, users not just using their smartphone for calls and messaging only, but they are using it for a variety of purposes such as banking transactions, e-mailing, chatting, online shopping, video conferencing, health monitoring, and many more. Most of these activities store personal and sensitive data of the user on the device, reaching this confidential information by unauthorized person may cause huge losses and bad consequences. Therefore, securing the smartphone’s accessibility from unauthorized people became an extremely essential. With the advanced development in the area of sensor-based smartphone authentication methods, different methods were developed to be easily used by users through specific criteria. However, many aspects haven’t been discovered yet in the area of sensor-based smartphone authentication methods. On the basis of that, this study aims to review the area of sensor-based smartphone authentication methods systematically to provide a comprehensive understanding of this new area and to discuss the current challenges and issues. To conduct this systematic review, four scientific digital databases were utilized; ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, and Scopus. The total number of studies found was n = 256 articles, only n = 46 articles were included based on our inclusion criteria. To provide a comprehensive understanding of the included studies, taxonomy was drawn. Also, this study provides a discussion on the current motivations, challenges and issues, and recommendations in sensor-based smartphone authentication methods. This review enlightens, encourage, and direct researchers to develop authentication solutions and reduce the current gaps in this area.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on January 31, 2020. However, rumors of a "mysterious virus" had already been circulating in China in December 2019, possibly preceding the first confirmed COVID-19 case. Understanding how awareness about an emerging pandemic spreads through society is vital not only for enhancing disease surveillance, but also for mitigating demand shocks and social inequities, such as shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) and essential supplies. Here we leverage a massive e-commerce dataset comprising 150 billion online queries and purchase records from 94 million people to detect the traces of early awareness and public response during the cryptic transmission period of COVID-19. Our analysis focuses on identifying information gaps across different demographic cohorts, revealing significant social inequities and the role of cultural factors in shaping awareness diffusion and response behaviors. By modeling awareness diffusion in heterogeneous social networks and analyzing online shopping behavior, we uncover the evolving characteristics of vulnerable populations. Our findings expand the theoretical understanding of awareness spread and social inequality in the early stages of a pandemic, highlighting the critical importance of e-commerce data and social network data in effectively and timely addressing future pandemic challenges. We also provide actionable recommendations to better manage and mitigate dynamic social inequalities in public health crises. © 2025, CC BY.

Cyberbullying detection has become a pressing need in Internet usage governance due to its harmful consequences. Different approaches have been proposed to tackle this problem, including deep learning. In this paper, an empirical study is conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of deep learning algorithms, coupled with word embeddings in detecting cyberbullying texts. Three deep learning algorithms were experimented, namely GRU, LSTM and BLSTM. Data pre-processing steps, including oversampling were performed on the selected social media datasets. For feature representations, four different word embeddings models were explored, including word2vec, GloVe, Reddit and ELMO models. Elmo cares of word context by capturing information from the word surroundings which eliminates some of the shortcomings of pre-trained word embeddings models. For more accurate results, 10-fold cross-validation technique was implemented. The experimental results show that BLSTM performs best with ELMO in detecting cyberbullying texts. The efficiency of each model is also measured by calculating the average time taken for training each model. GRU outperforms in terms of time efficiency. Based on the analysis done on false negative cases, three observations were made, which highlight the limitations of word embeddings models on top of GRU algorithm in cyberbullying detection. © 2019 ACM.
