With the rapid development of computing technology, three-dimensional （3D） human body models and their dynamic motions are widely used in the digital entertainment industry. Human performance mainly involves human body shapes and motions. Key research problems in human performance animation include how to capture and analyze static geometric appearance and dynamic movement of human bodies, and how to simulate human body motions with physical effects. In this survey, according to the main research directions of human body performance capture and animation, we summarize recent advances in key research topics, namely human body surface reconstruction, motion capture and synthesis, as well as physics-based motion simulation, and further discuss future research problems and directions. We hope this will be helpful for readers to have a comprehensive understanding of human performance capture and animation.

Three-layer concept drifting detection in text data streams

Text data streams have widely appeared in real-world applications, in which, concept drifts owe a significant challenge for classification. Compared with relational data streams, concept drifts hidden in text streams usually reflect in the relationship between the feature vector and the instance labels. Meanwhile, existing concept drifting detection methods are mainly based on error rates of classification. When applying these methods in text streams, they perform poorly in the evaluations of false alarms and missing detections, etc. Motivated by this, we firstly give a systematic analysis of the concept drifts in text data streams. Then, we propose a three-layer concept drifting detection approach, where the three layers indicate the layer of label space, the layer of feature space and the layer of the mapping relationships between labels and features, respectively. In this approach, the latter two layers are based on the values of WoE (Weight of Evidence) and the IV (Information Value) index. Experimental results show that our approach can improve the performance of concept drifting detection and the accuracy of classification, especially when concept drifts in text data streams are frequent. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Tenure provides a permanent position to faculty in higher education institutions. In North America, it is granted to those who have established a record of excellence in research, teaching and services in a limited period. However, in China, research excellence (represented by the number of Web of Science publications) is highly weighted in the tenure assessment compared to excellence in teaching and services, but this has never been systematically investigated. By analyzing the tenure assessment documents from Chinese universities, this study reveals the role of Web of Science publications in China's tenure system and presents the landscape of the tenure assessment process in Chinese higher education institutions. Therapeutic issues are commonly found in every single person. Tumor is a standout among the most unsafe sicknesses a human can ever had. It is exceptionally hard to distinguish it in its beginning times as its side effects seem just in the progressed stages. Subsequently, the early forecast of lung growth is compulsory for the analysis procedure, and it gives the higher possibilities for fruitful treatment. It is the most difficult approach to upgrade a patient’s possibility for survival. Henceforth, a higher-order neural network system called recurrent neural network with Levenberg–Marquardt model with the help of glowworm swarm optimization algorithm is proposed for managing multimodal disease information. The execution of the proposed strategies is tried with information and the benchmark dataset, and the outcomes demonstrate that the higher-order recurrent neural systems with glowworm swarm optimization give better accuracy of 98% in comparison with customary optimized neural network.

Research software has become a central asset in academic research. It optimizes existing and enables new research methods, implements and embeds research knowledge, and constitutes an essential research product in itself. Research software must be sustainable in order to understand, replicate, reproduce, and build upon existing research or conduct new research effectively. In other words, software must be available, discoverable, usable, and adaptable to new needs, both now and in the future. Research software therefore requires an environment that supports sustainability. Hence, a change is needed in the way research software development and maintenance are currently motivated, incentivized, funded, structurally and infrastructurally supported, and legally treated. Failing to do so will threaten the quality and validity of research. In this paper, we identify challenges for research software sustainability in Germany and beyond, in terms of motivation, selection, research software engineering personnel, funding, infrastructure, and legal aspects. Besides researchers, we specifically address political and academic decision-makers to increase awareness of the importance and needs of sustainable research software practices. In particular, we recommend strategies and measures to create an environment for sustainable research software, with the ultimate goal to ensure that software-driven research is valid, reproducible and sustainable, and that software is recognized as a first class citizen in research. This paper is the outcome of two workshops run in Germany in 2019, at deRSE19 - the first International Conference of Research Software Engineers in Germany - and a dedicated DFG-supported follow-up workshop in Berlin. Implementing a circular economy business model which is profitable for businesses operating physical assets, while at the same time does not conflict with strategic goals of environmental policies can be a complex and risky undertaking for a single entity, especially if the asset operator is a small-to-medium enterprise (SMEs). To mitigate this, a collaborative circular economy business model is proposed, where the circular economy cycle is materialized by assets transitioning between asset operators on a demanddriven approach. Demand itself is partially based on the asset's state, which is described by its circular properties (location, condition, availability). The asset state and its transition between operators can be monitored by auditors and governmental regulators to ensure asset integrity and compliance with environmental targets. This common view of asset state between all parties can be enabled by blockchains and smart contracts, which can provide the underlying technology to share data with integrity, while simultaneously offering more efficient interoperability between participants. To demonstrate how this could be achieved, a conceptual asset record access and sharing mechanism is presented which is suitable for regulated environmental jurisdictions.

In the IEEE 1609.4 legacy standard for multi-channel communications in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), the control channel (CCH) is dedicated to broadcast safety messages while the service channels (SCHs) are dedicated to transmit infotainment service content. However, the SCH can be used as an alternative to transmit high priority safety messages in the event that they are invoked during the service channel interval (SCHI). This implies that there is a need to transmit safety messages across multiple available utilized channels to ensure that all vehicles receive the safety message. Transmission across multiple SCH’s using the legacy IEEE 1609.4 requires multiple channel switching and therefore introduces further end-to-end delays. Given that safety messaging is a life critical application, it is important that optimal end-to-end delay performance is derived in multi-channel VANET scenarios to ensure reliable safety message dissemination. To tackle this challenge, three primary contributions are in this article: first, a channel coordinator selection approach based on the least average separation distance (LAD) to the vehicles that expect to tune to other SCH’s and operates during the control channel interval (CCHI) is proposed. Second, a model to determine the optimal time intervals in which CMD operates during the CCHI is proposed. Third, a contention back-off mechanism for safety message transmission during the SCHI is proposed. Nowadays, information and communication technologies (ICT) have become part of our everyday life, enhancing the quality of life and promoting new forms of social interaction. Despite the numerous benefits of ICT, older adults still present low rates of ICT adoption compared to other population segments. The lack of accessible User Interfaces has been identified as a major barrier. Traditional User Interfaces follow a design for all approach, typically ignoring the needs of older adults. Recent research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) proposes adaptive User Interfaces to suit the individual users abilities. Nevertheless, most of the existing approaches perform adaptation based on user profile groups and do not provide personalized adaptation in real-time. This paper introduces a conceptual framework for developing real-time adaptive User Interfaces. The system aims to target most common issues among older adults, i.e. cognitive decline and vision loss. The developed conceptual framework also presents novel strategic techniques to assess cognitive load and vision related issues in an unobtrusive manner for the user.

Publishing articles in high-impact English journals is difficult for scholars around the world, especially for non-native English-speaking scholars (NNESs), most of whom struggle with proficiency in English. In order to uncover the differences in English scientific writing between native English-speaking scholars (NESs) and NNESs, we collected a large-scale data set containing more than 150,000 full-text articles published in PLoS between 2006 and 2015. We divided these articles into three groups according to the ethnic backgrounds of the first and corresponding authors, obtained by Ethnea, and examined the scientific writing styles in English from a two-fold perspective of linguistic complexity: (1) syntactic complexity, including measurements of sentence length and sentence complexity;and (2) lexical complexity, including measurements of lexical diversity, lexical density, and lexical sophistication.
