Background: Fatigue is one of the most common and debilitating symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) and is the main reason why people with MS stop working early. The MS Society in the United Kingdom funded a randomized controlled trial of FACETS-a face-to-face group-based fatigue management program for people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS)-developed by members of the research team. Given the favorable trial results and to help with implementation, the MS Society supported the design and printing of the FACETS manual and materials and the national delivery of FACETS training courses (designed by the research team) for health care professionals (HCPs). By 2015 more than 1500 pwMS had received the FACETS program, but it is not available in all areas and a face-to-face format may not be suitable for, or appeal to, everyone. For these reasons, the MS Society funded a consultation to explore an alternative Web-based model of service delivery. Objective: The aim of this study was to gather views about a Web-based model of service delivery from HCPs who had delivered FACETS and from pwMS who had attended FACETS. Methods: Telephone consultations were undertaken with FACETS-trained HCPs who had experience of delivering FACETS (n=8). Three face-to-face consultation groups were held with pwMS who had attended the FACETS program: London (n=4), Liverpool (n=4), and Bristol (n=7). The interviews and consultation groups were digitally recorded and transcribed. A thematic analysis was undertaken to identify key themes. Toward the end of the study, a roundtable meeting was held to discuss outcomes from the consultation with representatives from the MS Society, HCPs, and pwMS. Results: Key challenges and opportunities of designing and delivering an integrated Web-based version of FACETS and maintaining user engagement were identified across 7 themes (delivery, online delivery, design, group, engagement, interactivity, and HCP relationships). The objective of the paper was to understand the challenges towards e-Government implementation in South Africa. The paper contributes to the ongoing discussion regarding the challenges facing e-government implementations in developing nations. It presents the outcomes of several discussions conducted with representatives from the municipal sector. These included semi structured interviews and a workshop with 40 attendees resulting in qualitative primary data. Through the application of an inductive thematic data analysis, the paper reflects on the critical role that municipalities hold in pursuing e-Government. It further discusses the different stakeholders that may influence the manifestation of e-Government for municipalities. It also highlights the barriers identified by respondents that require consideration from local government. The barriers include governance related issues, access to resources, leadership, ICT skills and funding.

Joint person re-identification and camera network topology inference in multiple cameras

Person re-identification is the task of recognizing or identifying a person across multiple views in multi-camera networks. Although there has been much progress in person reidentification, person re-identification in large-scale multi-camera networks still remains a challenging task because of the large spatio-temporal uncertainty and high complexity due to a large number of cameras and people. To handle these difficulties, additional information such as camera network topology should be provided, which is also difficult to automatically estimate, unfortunately. In this study, we propose a unified framework which jointly solves both person re-identification and camera network topology inference problems with minimal prior knowledge about the environments. The proposed framework takes general multi-camera network environments into account and can be applied to online person re-identification in large-scale multi-camera networks. In addition, to effectively show the superiority of the proposed framework, we provide a new person re-identification dataset with full annotations, named SLP, captured in the multi-camera network consisting of nine non-overlapping cameras. Experimental results using our person re-identification and public datasets show that the proposed methods are promising for both person re-identification and camera topology inference tasks. Exercise-based rehabilitation plays a key role for patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) in improving their well-being and reducing their symptoms. Monitoring and assessing the exercise response at an individual level is critical toward achieving better health outcomes. 15 exercise sessions performed by 5 CVD patients and 9 sessions from 3 regularly active individuals were monitored, and heart rate (HR) data were acquired. A model based on the HR dynamics during exercising at different intensities was built, and simulations were performed to assess performance in different scenarios of exercise selection. Our results show that the application of simple rules in exercise selection, which consider both the HR and the beneficial HR zones of individuals, can lead to beneficial execution of exercise programs (%time spent in beneficial HR zones: 60.6±27.5 for CVD patients). Personalized guidance during exercise has the potential to significantly contribute in the beneficial execution of exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation programs. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2018.

Center-embedding is difficult to process and is known as a rare syntactic construction across languages. In this paper we describe a method to incorporate this assumption into the grammar induction tasks by restricting the search space of a model to trees with limited center-embedding. The key idea is the tabulation of left-corner parsing, which captures the degree of center-embedding of a parse via its stack depth. We apply the technique to learning of famous generative model, the dependency model with valence (Klein and Manning, 2004). Cross-linguistic experiments on Universal Dependencies show that often our method boosts the performance from the baseline, and competes with the current state-of-the-art model in a number of languages. © 2016 Association for Computational Linguistics

The aim of this one-day workshop is to share existing research, discuss common practices, and to develop new strategies and tools for designing for social justice in HCI. This workshop will bring together a set of HCI scholars, designers, and community members to discuss social justice perspectives on interaction design and technology. We will explore theoretical and methodological approaches in and around HCI that can help us generatively consider issues of power, privilege, and access in their complexity. We will discuss the challenges associated with taking a justice approach in HCI, looking toward existing practices we find both productive and problematic. This workshop will bridge current gaps in research and practice by developing concrete strategies for both designing and evaluating social change oriented work in HCI, where agendas are made clear and researchers are held accountable for the outcomes of their work by members of their field site and the research community. © 2016 Authors.

Most sentiment analysis researches are done with the help of supervised machine learning techniques. Analyzing sentiment for these English text reviews is a non-trivial task in order to gauge public perception and acceptance of a particular issue being addressed. Nevertheless, there are not many studies conducted on analyzing sentiment of Malay news headlines due to lack of resources and tools. The Malay news headlines normally consist of a few words and are often written with creativity to attract the readers’ attention. This paper proposes a standard framework that investigates factors affecting sentiment prediction of Malay news headlines using machine learning approaches. It is important to investigate factors (e.g., types of classifiers, proximity measurements and number of Nearest Neighbors, k) that influence the prediction performance of the sentiment analysis as it helps to study and understand the parameters that can be tuned to optimize the prediction performance. Based on the results obtained, Support Vector Machine and Naïve Bayes classifiers were capable to obtain higher accuracy compared to the k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN) classifier. In term of proximity measurement and number of Nearest Neighbors, k, the k-NN classifier achieved higher prediction performance when the Cosine similarity is applied with a small value of k (e.g., 3 and 5), compared to the Euclidean distance because it measures can be affected by the high dimensionality of the data. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2016.

In learning relational data, the Dynamic Aggregation of Relational Attributes algorithm is capable to transform a multi-relational database into a vector space representation, in which a traditional clustering algorithm can then be applied directly to summarize relational data. However, the performance of the algorithm is highly dependent on the quality of clusters produced. A small change in the initialization of the clustering algorithm parameters may cause adverse effects to the clusters quality produced. In optimizing the quality of clusters, a Genetic Algorithm is used to find the best combination of initializations in order to produce the optimal clusters. The proposed method involves the task of finding the best initialization with respect to the number of clusters, proximity distance measurements, fitness functions, and classifiers used for the evaluation. Based on the results obtained, clustering coupled with Euclidean distance is found to perform better in the classification stage compared to using clustering coupled with Cosine similarity. Based on the findings, the cluster entropy is the best fitness function, followed by multi-objectives fitness function used in the genetic algorithm. This is most probably because of the involvement of external measurement that takes the class label into consideration in optimizing the structure of the cluster results. In short, this paper shows the influence of varying the initialization values on the predictive performance. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2016.
