Traffic flow cannot be predicted solely based on historical data due to its high dynamics and sensitivity to emergency situations. In this paper, a real traffic data collected from 2011 to 2014 is used, and an adaptive prediction model based on a variant of Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), namely On-line Sequential ELM with forgetting mechanism, is built. The model has the capability of updating itself using incoming data, and adapts to the changes in real time. However, limitations, such as the requirements of large number of neurons and dataset size for initialization, are discovered in practice. To improve the applicability, another scheme involving sequential updating and network reconstruction is proposed. The experimental results show that, compared with the previous method, the proposed one has better performance in time while achieving the similar accuracy.

Forgery detection of official documents is a continuous challenge encountered by documents’ forensic experts. Among the most common counterfeited documents we may find citizen cards, passports and driving licenses. Forgers are increasingly resorting to more sophisticated techniques to produce fake documents, trying to deceive criminal polices and hamper their work. Having an updated past counterfeited documents image catalogue enables forensic experts to determine if a similar technique or material was already used to forge a document. Thus, through the modus operandi characterization is possible to obtain more information about the source of the counterfeited document. In this paper we present an information system to manage counterfeited documents images that includes a two-fold approach: (i) the storage of images of past counterfeited documents seized by questioned documents forensic experts of the Portuguese Scientific Laboratory in a structured database; and (ii) the automation of the counterfeit identification by comparing a given fraudulent document image with the database images of previously catalogued counterfeited documents. In general, the proposed information system aims to smooth the counterfeit identification and to overcome the error prone, manual and time consuming tasks carried on by forensic experts. Hence, we have used a scalable algorithm under the OpenCV framework, to compare images, match patterns and analyse textures and colours. The algorithm was tested on a subset of counterfeited Portuguese citizen cards, presenting very promising results.

Incomplete Sparse Approximate Inverses (ISAI) have recently been shown to be an attractive alternative to exact sparse triangular solves in the context of incomplete factorization preconditioning. In this paper we propose a batched GPU-kernel for the efficient generation of ISAI matrices. Utilizing only thread-local memory allows for computing the ISAI matrix with very small memory footprint. We demonstrate that this strategy is faster than the existing strategy for generating ISAI matrices, and use a large number of test matrices to assess the algorithm's efficiency in an iterative solver setting.

The idea of images as a foundational mode of creating and articulating knowledge about interactivity has been gaining traction in HCI and interaction design. The use of photography and imagery has been the foundation of traditional schools of design. In HCI, the centrality of visual form has been advanced by Goldsmiths at the University of London under the stewardship of William Gaver. The HCI researchers at the university believe that everyone can participate in making images a foundational mode of creating and articulating knowledge about interactivity.

Learners at tertiary institutions struggle with writing objectoriented programs in complex object-oriented programming (OOP) languages. This paper describes a study that sought to improve learners' understanding of programming in the domain of OOP. This was done through the use of a visual programming environment (VPE) called Alice, which was designed to help novice programmers learn OOP concepts, whilst creating animated movies and video games. A questionnaire was administered to obtain quantitative and qualitative data regarding learners' understanding of OOP and their experience with the Alice environment. Findings indicate that learners spend insufficient time on programming exercises and struggle with problem-solving, applying OOP concepts, and abstraction. However, the use of Alice addressed challenges faced by experiment participants within the object-oriented domain and improved their motivation to learn OOP. Further results revealed that the test and exam performance of learners who used Alice, was not statistically better than those of similar learners who were not exposed to the Alice intervention. © 2015 ACM.

Trees can differ enormously in their crown architectural traits, such as the scaling relationships between tree height, crown width and stem diameter. Yet despite the importance of crown architecture in shaping the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems, we lack a complete picture of what drives this incredible diversity in crown shapes. Using data from 374,888 globally distributed trees, we explore how climate, disturbance, competition, functional traits, and evolutionary history constrain the height and crown width scaling relationships of 1914 tree species. We find that variation in height-diameter scaling relationships is primarily controlled by water availability and light competition. Conversely, crown width is predominantly shaped by exposure to wind and fire, while also covarying with functional traits related to mechanical stability and photosynthesis. Additionally, we identify several plant lineages with highly distinctive stem and crown forms, such as the exceedingly slender dipterocarps of Southeast Asia, or the extremely wide crowns of legume trees in African savannas. Our study charts the global spectrum of tree crown architecture and pinpoints the processes that shape the 3D structure of woody ecosystems.

Hand tracking systems are becoming increasingly popular as a fundamental HCI approach. The trajectory of moving hand can be estimated through smoothing the position coordinates collected from continuous localization. Therefore, hand localization is a key component of any hand tracking systems. This paper presents EchoLoc, which locates the human hand by leveraging the speaker array in Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) devices (i.e., a smart phone plugged with a stereo speaker). EchoLoc measures the distance from the hand to the speaker array via the Time Of Flight (TOF) of the chirp. The speaker array and hand yield a unique triangle, therefore, the hand can be localized with triangular geometry. We prototype EchoLoc on iOS as an application, and find it is capable of localization with the average resolution within five centimeters of 73% and three centimeters of 48%.

This survey explores Procedural Content Generation via Machine Learning (PCGML), defined as the generation of game content using machine learning models trained on existing content. As the importance of PCG for game development increases, researchers explore new avenues for generating high-quality content with or without human involvement;this paper addresses the relatively new paradigm of using machine learning (in contrast with search-based, solver-based, and constructive methods). We focus on what is most often considered functional game content such as platformer levels, game maps, interactive fiction stories, and cards in collectible card games, as opposed to cosmetic content such as sprites and sound effects. In addition to using PCG for autonomous generation, co-creativity, mixed-initiative design, and compression, PCGML is suited for repair, critique, and content analysis because of its focus on modeling existing content. We discuss various data sources and representations that affect the generated content. Multiple PCGML methods are covered, including neural networks: long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, autoencoders, and deep convolutional networks;Markov models: n-grams and multi-dimensional Markov chains;clustering;and matrix factorization. Finally, we discuss open problems in PCGML, including learning from small datasets, lack of training data, multi-layered learning, style-transfer, parameter tuning, and PCG as a game mechanic. Cloud forensics introduce processes for resolving incidents occurring in cloud computing environments. However, designing cloud services capable to assist a cloud investigation process is of vital importance and recent research efforts concentrate on these directions. In addition, digital forensics methods cannot support a cloud investigation since cloud environments introduce many differences compared to traditional IT environments. This paper moves current research one step further by identifying the major concepts, actors and their relationships that participating in a cloud forensics process through the introduction of a new meta-model. The paper presents a running example as well for better understanding the suggested concepts. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.
