High blood pressure is a highly heritable and modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. We report the largest genetic association study of blood pressure traits (systolic, diastolic and pulse pressure) to date in over 1 million people of European ancestry. We identify 535 novel blood pressure loci that not only offer new biological insights into blood pressure regulation but also highlight shared genetic architecture between blood pressure and lifestyle exposures. Our findings identify new biological pathways for blood pressure regulation with potential for improved cardiovascular disease prevention in the future.

Nowadays systems administrators are facing with huge challenges in securing and protecting information systems. Intrusions attempts are increasing and becoming more sophisticated by days leading to the common presumption that any information systems can be hacked into, no matter what level of security measures are being taken. Systems administrators are also relying heavily on security tools to secure their computer systems and security tools can be out-dated overtime. Therefore from digital forensics perspectives, preparing the systems in advance with the presumption that the information systems will be hacked, and taking all the necessary steps to ensure preservation of key evidences, can lead to successful legal prosecutions. The Authors proposed a simplified Digital Forensic Readiness Model as a framework that can be used to prepare any appropriate computer system forensically and increase its readiness at the same time.

Disaster-based failures can seriously disrupt any communication network, making its services unavailable. Such disruptions may be caused by natural disasters, technology-related failures, or malicious attacks, and they are observably increasing in number, intensity and scale. When network services that are a part of critical infrastructure become unavailable, commercial and/or societal problems are inevitable. The issue of limiting the impact of disaster-based failures needs to be urgently addressed due to the lack of suitable mechanisms deployed in the current networks. The COST CA15127 (RECODIS) Action will fill this gap by developing appropriate solutions to provide cost-efficient resilient communications in the presence of disaster-based disruptions considering both existing and emerging communication network architectures. It will be driven by researchers from academia and industry in strong cooperation with governmental bodies. In this paper, we highlight the objectives of RECODIS, its structure, as well as planned outcomes.

This research proposal proposes the examination of user attitudes about the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE). The XSEDE project supports basic research with a common system for making use of national cyberinfrastructure. The systems and infrastructure that make XSEDE useful for researchers are part of an actor network: these systems are socially constructed and they play their own part in the work of XSEDE, and in turn have an effect on the progress of basic research. I have completed previous work on the user relationships in the predecessor to XSEDE, the TeraGrid, and currently carry out participant observation with the management groups of the XSEDE project. By understanding the barriers to adoption of XSEDE by new researchers and new scientific domains, I hope to explore the linkage between resources (in this case computational resources) and scientific outputs.

Interaction design (IxD) research cuts through many domains of HCI yet remains distinctive. There are convincing arguments that Research through Design (RtD) is a valid research method in the concerned field. Important to these arguments is how RtD allows IxD researchers to actually do design as an empirical method to gain knowledge, rather than aligning with the user study tradition. First-order knowledge is crucial to design practice, but it should not overshadow the need for the IxD research community to articulate the many forms of design knowledge that can be extracted from design processes.

Although it is widely accepted that robots will be used in everyday contexts in near future, many people feel anxious and hold negative attitudes toward robots. This negative reaction might be stronger when users come into direct physical contact with them, particularly when touch is required between robots and humans, (e.g., when using robots as assistants to help elderly people at home). Intergroup contact research in social psychology has proposed various forms of contact as a means to reduce negative feelings toward outgroup members. The present study examined how Contact Type (Actual vs. Imagined) and Contact Modality (Look vs. Touch) with a NAO robot would impact attitudes toward NAO compared to a no-contact control condition. Results showed that nearly any type of contact effectively reduced negative emotions compared to the control condition. However, for participants with preexisting negative emotions toward robots, contact sometimes produced more negative attitudes. We discuss these findings and the resulting implications for future research.

In bacterial populations, cells are able to cooperate in order to yield complex collective functionalities. Interest in population-level cellular behaviour is increasing, due to both our expanding knowledge of the underlying biological principles, and the growing range of possible applications for engineered microbial consortia. The ability of cells to interact through small signalling molecules (a mechanism known as quorum sensing) is the basis for the majority of existing engineered systems. However, horizontal gene transfer (or conjugation) offers the possibility of cells exchanging messages (using DNA) that are much more information-rich. The potential of engineering this conjugation mechanism to suit specific goals will guide future developments in this area. Motivated by a lack of computational models for examining the specific dynamics of conjugation, we present a simulation framework for its further study. A distributed mobile cloud service model called "POEM" is presented to manage the mobile cloud resource and compose mobile cloud applications. POEM provides the following salient features: (a) it considers resource management not only between mobile devices and clouds, but also among mobile devices, (b) it utilizes the entire mobile cloud system as the mobile application running platform, and as a result, the mobile cloud application development is significantly simplified and enriched, and (c) it addresses the interoperability issues among mobile devices and cloud resource providers to allow mobile cloud applications running cross various cloud virtual machines and mobile devices. The proposed POEM solution is demonstrated by using OSGi and XMPP techniques. Our performance evaluations demonstrate that POEM provides a true elastic application running environment for mobile cloud computing.

Gliomas are the most common primary brain malignancies, with different degrees of aggressiveness, variable prognosis and various heterogeneous histologic sub-regions, i.e., peritumoral edematous/invaded tissue, necrotic core, active and non-enhancing core. This intrinsic heterogeneity is also portrayed in their radio-phenotype, as their sub-regions are depicted by varying intensity profiles disseminated across multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) scans, reflecting varying biological properties. Their heterogeneous shape, extent, and location are some of the factors that make these tumors difficult to resect, and in some cases inoperable. The amount of resected tumor is a factor also considered in longitudinal scans, when evaluating the apparent tumor for potential diagnosis of progression. Furthermore, there is mounting evidence that accurate segmentation of the various tumor sub-regions can offer the basis for quantitative image analysis towards prediction of patient overall survival. This study assesses the state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) methods used for brain tumor image analysis in mpMRI scans, during the last seven instances of the International Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) challenge, i.e., 2012-2018. Specifically, we focus on i) evaluating segmentations of the various glioma sub-regions in pre-operative mpMRI scans, ii) assessing potential tumor progression by virtue of longitudinal growth of tumor sub-regions, beyond use of the RECIST/RANO criteria, and iii) predicting the overall survival from pre-operative mpMRI scans of patients that underwent gross total resection. Finally, we investigate the challenge of identifying the best ML algorithms for each of these tasks, considering that apart from being diverse on each instance of the challenge, the multi-institutional mpMRI BraTS dataset has also been a continuously evolving/growing dataset.
