We propose a new item-ranking method that is reliable and can efficiently identify high-quality items from among a set of items in a given category using their review-scores which were rated and posted by users. Typical ranking methods rely only on either the number of reviews or the average review score. Some of them discount outdated ratings by using a temporal-decay function to make a fair comparison between old and new items. The proposed method reflects trust levels by incorporating a trust discount factor into a temporal-decay function. We first define the MTDF (Multinomial with Trust Discount Factor) model for the review-score distribution of each item built from the observed review data. We then bring in the notion of z-score to accommodate the trust variance that comes from the number of reviews available, and propose a z-score version of MTDF model. Finally we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method using the MovieLens dataset, showing that the proposed ranking method can derive more reasonable and trustable rankings, compared to two naive ranking methods and the pure z-score based ranking method. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

A search for long-lived, massive particles predicted by many theories beyond the Standard Model is presented. The search targets final states with large missing transverse momentum and at least one high-mass displaced vertex with five or more tracks, and uses 32.8 fb−1 of s=13 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The observed yield is consistent with the expected background. The results are used to extract 95% C.L. exclusion limits on the production of long-lived gluinos with masses up to 2.37 TeV and lifetimes of O(10−2)−O(10) ns in a simplified model inspired by split supersymmetry.

A search for pair production of the supersymmetric partners of the Higgs boson (higgsinos H˜) in gauge-mediated scenarios is reported. Each higgsino is assumed to decay to a Higgs boson and a gravitino. Two complementary analyses, targeting high- and low-mass signals, are performed to maximize sensitivity. The two analyses utilize LHC pp collision data at a center-of-mass energy s=13 TeV, the former with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 and the latter with 24.3 fb−1, collected with the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. The search is performed in events containing missing transverse momentum and several energetic jets, at least three of which must be identified as b-quark jets. No significant excess is found above the predicted background. Limits on the cross section are set as a function of the mass of the H˜ in simplified models assuming production via mass-degenerate higgsinos decaying to a Higgs boson and a gravitino. Higgsinos with masses between 130 and 230 GeV and between 290 and 880 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level. Interpretations of the limits in terms of the branching ratio of the higgsino to a Z boson or a Higgs boson are also presented, and a 45% branching ratio to a Higgs boson is excluded for mH˜≈400 GeV.

Many extensions of the Standard Model predict new resonances decaying to a Z, W, or Higgs boson and a photon. This paper presents a search for such resonances produced in pp collisions at s=13 TeV using a data set with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The Z/W/H bosons are identified through their decays to hadrons. The data are found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectation in the entire investigated mass range. Upper limits are set on the production cross section times branching fraction for resonance decays to Z/W+γ in the mass range from 1.0 to 6.8 TeV and for the first time into H+γ in the mass range from 1.0 to 3.0 TeV.

A search for the supersymmetric partners of quarks and gluons (squarks and gluinos) in final states containing hadronic jets and missing transverse momentum, but no electrons or muons, is presented. The data used in this search were recorded in 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS experiment in s=13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1. The results are interpreted in the context of various models where squarks and gluinos are pair produced and the neutralino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. An exclusion limit at the 95% confidence level on the mass of the gluino is set at 2.03 TeV for a simplified model incorporating only a gluino and the lightest neutralino, assuming the lightest neutralino is massless. For a simplified model involving the strong production of mass-degenerate first- and second-generation squarks, squark masses below 1.55 TeV are excluded if the lightest neutralino is massless. These limits substantially extend the region of supersymmetric parameter space previously excluded by searches with the ATLAS detector.

A search is presented for the direct pair production of the stop, the supersymmetric partner of the top quark, that decays through an R-parity-violating coupling to a final state with two leptons and two jets, at least one of which is identified as a b-jet. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV, collected in 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. No significant excess is observed over the Standard Model background, and exclusion limits are set on stop pair production at a 95% confidence level. Lower limits on the stop mass are set between 600 GeV and 1.5 TeV for branching ratios above 10% for decays to an electron or muon and a b-quark.

A measurement of the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of dijet azimuthal decorrelations is presented, using the quantity RΔϕ. The quantity RΔϕ specifies the fraction of the inclusive dijet events in which the azimuthal opening angle of the two jets with the highest transverse momenta is less than a given value of the parameter Δϕmax. The quantity RΔϕ is measured in proton-proton collisions at s=8 TeV as a function of the dijet rapidity interval, the event total scalar transverse momentum, and Δϕmax. The measurement uses an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb−1 collected with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Predictions of a perturbative QCD calculation at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling with corrections for nonperturbative effects are compared to the data. The theoretical predictions describe the data in the whole kinematic region. The data are used to determine the strong coupling αS and to study its running for momentum transfers from 260 GeV to above 1.6 TeV. Analysis that combines data at all momentum transfers results in αS(mZ)=0.1127−0.0027+0.0063.

While classical information retrieval and recommendation can provide users effective information access, for scientific documents, i.e., scientific publications, however, understanding the content of scientific publications remains daunting, i.e., Information Access # Information Understanding. In order to help students and junior scholars better understand the essence of scientific topics discussed in scholarly papers, we propose an innovative approach to recommend high-quality open educational resources (OER), such as presentation slides, tutorials, video lectures, project source code, and Wikipedia pages, collected from a number of social media systems. The proposed new system - OER-based Collaborative PDF Reader (OCPR) - captures students' emerging implicit/explicit information needs when reading a scientific paper, while recommending OERs to assist them better understand the target paper. Parallelization of extracting connected subgraphs with common itemsets

This paper proposes a parallel algorithm to extract all connected subgraphs, each of which shares a common itemset whose size is not less than a given threshold, from a given graph in which each vertex is associated to an itemset. We also propose implementations of this algorithm using the task-parallel language Tascell. This kind of graph mining can be applied to analysis of social or biological networks. We have already proposed an efficient sequential search algorithm called COPINE for this problem. COPINE reduces the search space of a dynamically growing tree structure by pruning its branches corresponding to the following subgraphs;already visited, having itemsets smaller than the threshold, and having already-visited supergraphs with identical itemsets. For the third pruning, we use a table associating already-visited subgraphs and their itemsets. To avoid excess pruning in a parallel search where a unique set of subtrees (tasks) is assigned to each worker, we should put a certain restriction on a worker when it is referring to a table entry registered by another worker. We designed a parallel algorithm as an extension of COPINE by introducing this restriction. A problem of the implementation is how workers efficiently share the table entries so that a worker can safely use as many entries registered by other workers as possible. We implemented two sharing methods: (1) a victim worker makes a copy of its own table and passes it to a thief worker when the victim spawns a task by dividing its task and assigns it to the thief, and (2) a single table controlled by locks is shared among workers. We evaluated these implementations using a real protein network. As a result, the single table implementation achieved a speedup of approximately a factor four with 16 workers. © 2014 Information Processing Society of Japan.
