Person re-identification concerns about the problem of recognizing people across space (captured by different cameras) and/or over time gaps. Though recently the literature on it grows rapidly, all the proposed solutions have treated it as a normal classification or ranking problem. In this paper, however, we argue that it is in fact a natural transfer learning problem, thus it's valuable and also necessary to investigate how the progress on transfer learning could benefit the research on it. We present so far the first study on justifying the effectiveness of a representative transfer learning methodology: feature-based inductive transfer learning, for person re-identification. Extensive experiments on standard datasets with typical methods result in several important findings.

Background: Despite the number of Web effort estimation techniques investigated, there is no consensus as to which technique produces the most accurate estimates, an issue shared by effort estimation in the general software estimation domain. A previous study in this domain has shown that using ensembles of estimation techniques can be used to address this issue. Aim: The aim of this paper is to investigate whether ensembles of effort estimation techniques will be similarly successful when used on Web project data. Method: The previous study built ensembles using solo effort estimation techniques that were deemed superior. In order to identify these superior techniques two approaches were investigated: The first involved replicating the methodology used in the previous study, while the second approach used the Scott-Knott algorithm. Both approaches were done using the same 90 solo estimation techniques on Web project data from the Tukutuku dataset. The replication identified 16 solo techniques that were deemed superior and were used to build 15 ensembles, while the Scott-Knott algorithm identified 19 superior solo techniques that were used to build two ensembles. Results: The ensembles produced by both approaches performed very well against solo effort estimation techniques. With the replication, the top 12 techniques were all ensembles, with the remaining 3 ensembles falling within the top 17 techniques. These 15 effort estimation ensembles, along with the 2 built by the second approach, were grouped into the best cluster of effort estimation techniques by the Scott-Knott algorithm. Conclusion: While it may not be possible to identify a single best technique, the results suggest that ensembles of estimation techniques consistently perform well even when using Web project data.

This paper presents a study of and triboson production using events from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb . The production cross-section is determined using a final state containing an electron, a muon, a photon, and neutrinos ( ). Upper limits on the production cross-section of the final state and the and final states containing an electron or a muon, two jets, a photon, and a neutrino ( or ) are also derived. The results are compared to the cross-sections predicted by the Standard Model at next-to-leading order in the strong-coupling constant. In addition, upper limits on the production cross-sections are derived in a fiducial region optimised for a search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The results are interpreted in the context of anomalous quartic gauge couplings using an effective field theory. Confidence intervals at 95% confidence level are derived for the 14 coupling coefficients to which and production are sensitive.

Over 50 million persons worldwide are affected by epilepsy. It can affect equally young babies as well as old people. Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterized by the neurobiological, cognitive, psychological and social consequences. It is known for sudden, unexpected transitions from normal to pathological behavioral states called epileptic seizures. Epilepsy poses a significant burden to society due to associated healthcare cost to treat and control the unpredictable and spontaneous occurrence of seizures. There is a need for a quick screening process that could help neurologists diagnose and determine the patient's treatment. Electroencephalogram has been traditionally used to diagnose patients by evaluating those brain functions that might correspond to epilepsy. This research focuses on developing new classification technique and the prediction of pre-ictal states that announce epileptic seizures, from the online EEG data analysis. The idea is to place electrodes on critical regions on the patient's head that would wirelessly communicate with the EEG recorder and the unit that performs online automated pre-ictal state detection based on obtained EEG signal. The patient should get timely alert about the possible seizure attack so that she/he can stop with its activities and take safety precautions. © 2013 IEEE.

The author's unique characteristic is determined by the variation of generated features from feature extraction process. Different sets of features produced are based on different feature extraction methods (local or global). Thus, the process has led to the production of high dimensional datasets that contributing to many irrelevant or redundant features. The main problem however is to find a way to identify the most significant features. The features ranking method using Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) is proposed to find the significance of each feature and give ranking to the features. This study presents the Higher-Order United Moment Invariant (HUMI) as the global feature extraction methods. The combinations of features with the higher ranking are discretized and used as the subsets of features to identify the writer. The result demonstrates that the average classification accuracy of five classifiers by using just the combination of two most significant features have yielded a better performance than using all features.

Current data mining and statistical methods to extract patterns and relationships in microbiomic data are often based on several assumptions such as Euclidean, linear, continuous and metric space which may not be the true space of microbiomic data. For example, the microbial profiles (functional and taxonomic classifications) are often correlated in a hierarchical style. These assumptions prevent discovering the true relationships in microbiomic data analysis. Thus, it is urgent to develop new computational methods to overcome these assumptions and consider the microbiomic data properties in the analysis procedure. In this study, we will propose novel variable selection method based on manifold-constrained regularization (McRe). Considering the nonlinear and correlation structure of data, McRe get improved results in simulation data. The method is also applied to a microbiomic dataset.

Computer networks support many of the services that our society relies on. Therefore, ensuring their resilience to faults and challenges, such as attacks, is critical. To do this can require the execution of resilience strategies that perform dynamic reconfiguration of networks, including resilience-specific functionality. It is important that resilience strategies are evaluated prior to their execution, for example, to ensure they will not exacerbate an on-going problem. To facilitate this activity, we have developed a toolset that supports the evaluation of resilience strategies that are specified as event-driven policies. The toolset couples the Ponder2 policy-based management framework and the OMNeT++ simulation environment. In this paper, we discuss the network resilience problem and motivate simulation as a suitable way to evaluate resilience strategies. We describe the toolset we have developed, including its architecture and the implementation of a number of resilience mechanisms, and its application to evaluating strategies that detect and mitigate Internet worm behaviour.

This technical demonstration presents PReSET, a toolset for the simulation and evaluation of network resilience strategies. The toolset is based on an integration between the Ponder2 policy framework and the OMNeT++ simulator. It permits the offline evaluation of policy-based strategies that perform dynamic reconfiguration of resilience mechanisms to contain malicious attacks and other challenges to a network.
