Predictive pre-fetcher, which predicts future data access events and loads the data before users requests, has been widely studied, especially in file systems or web contents servers, to reduce data load latency. Especially in scientific data visualization, pre-fetching can reduce the IO waiting time. In order to increase the accuracy, we apply a data mining technique to extract hidden information. More specifically, we apply a data mining technique for discovering the hidden contexts in data access patterns and make prediction based on the inferred context to boost the accuracy. In particular, we performed Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis (PLSA), a mixture model based algorithm popular in the text mining area, to mine hidden contexts from the collected user access patterns and, then, we run a predictor within the discovered context. We further improve PLSA by applying the Deterministic Annealing (DA) method to overcome the local optimum problem. In this paper we demonstrate how we can apply PLSA and DA optimization to mine hidden contexts from users data access patterns and improve predictive pre-fetcher performance.

In cloud computing, security is an important issue due to the increasing scale of users. Current approaches to access control on clouds do not scale well to multi-tenancy requirements because they are mostly based on individual user IDs at different granularity levels. However, the number of users can be enormous and causes significant overhead in managing security. RBAC (Role-Based Access Control) is attractive because the number of roles is significantly less, and users can be classified according to their roles. This paper proposes a RBAC model using a role ontology for Multi-Tenancy Architecture (MTA) in clouds. The ontology is used to build up the role hierarchy for a specific domain. Ontology transformation operations algorithms are provided to compare the similarity of different ontology. The proposed framework can ease the design of security system in cloud and reduce the complexity of system design and implementation.

Humour classification is one of the most interesting and difficult tasks in text classification. Humour is subjective by nature, yet humans are able to promptly define their preferences. Nowadays people often search for humour as a relaxing proxy to overcome stressful and demanding situations, having little or no time to search contents for such activities. Hence, we propose to aid the definition of personal models that allow the user to access humour with more confidence on the precision of his preferences. In this paper we focus on a Support Vector Machine (SVM) active learning strategy that uses specific most informative examples to improve baseline performance. Experiments were carried out using the widely available Jester jokes dataset, with encouraging results on the proposed framework.

Control of physiological states such as mean arterial pressure (MAP) has been successfully achieved using single drug by different control algorithms. Multi-drug delivery demonstrates a significantly challenging task as compared to control with a single-drug. Also the patient's sensitivity to the drugs varies from patient to patient. Therefore, the implementation of adaptive controller is very essential to improve the patient care in order to reduce the workload of healthcare staff and costs. This paper presents the design and implementation of the model reference adaptive controller (MRAC) to regulate mean arterial pressure and cardiac output by administering vasoactive and inotropic drugs that are sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and dopamine (DPM) respectively. The proposed adaptive control model has been implemented, tested and verified to demonstrate its merits and capabilities as compared to the existing research work. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

We propose "Iroha Pad", a waka composing and playing interface using the anagram of the iroha poem that is a Japanese traditional pangram. This system supports users who have less literacy of Japanese literature for composing and appreciation of a waka. Users anagrammatize the iroha poem on 8 by 8 grid and make phrases of a waka like playing a puzzle. A waka is composed by arranging made phrases according to traditional waka styles. Each character of the composed waka is assigned a musical note of Japanese traditional musical scales. Users can appreciate the composed waka by playing sounds of characters of the composed waka like playing musical instruments. © 2011 IEEE.

Cloud computing and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) are being widely applied. In the near future, there will be many cloud services providing similar services. One of the issues is to dispatch service requests to available services dynamically so that service requests can be served in the most effective and efficient way. This paper proposes an algorithm that efficiently serves requests for services by predicting the number of services needed. Furthermore, a cloud architectural framework to support the algorithm and prediction model is introduced. The paper also presents a simulation study to validate the algorithm proposed. © 2011 IEEE.

The name ambiguity problem is a challenge in many areas, especially in the field of bibliographic digital libraries. For example, in services that use citation data to compute the impact of authors, ambiguous names lead to biased measures. The problem is amplified where names are collected from heterogeneous sources, including crowdsourced annotations. This is the case in the Scholarometer system, which cross-correlates author names in user queries with those retrieved from bibliographic data. The uncontrolled nature of user-generated annotations is very valuable, but creates the need to detect ambiguous names. In this paper, we propose an approach to detect ambiguous names at query time, which makes it applicable in the context of a social computing application. We explore two kinds of heuristic features based on citations and crowdsourced topics. Our approach can detect ambiguous author names in crowdsourced scholarly data with an accuracy of 75%. © 2011 IEEE.
