Requirements Engineering (RE) studies have demonstrated that requirements errors affect the quality of software developed, making software requirements critical determinants of software quality. Requirements Engineering Process Improvement (REPI) models have been provided by different authors to improve the RE process. However, little success has been achieved in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) software companies especially in transitional countries such as Uganda. This study reports on an exploratory study which provides insights into current RE practices in four Ugandan SME software companies, critical success factors and challenges that impede REPI. As a result a Systematic Approach to REPI has been designed following the design science approach. It provides guidelines and steps for SMEs in improving their RE processes. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Cloud computing and SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) received significant attention recently. Testing SaaS applications is important because many mission-critical applications will be deployed on the cloud. However, to the best of our knowledge, testing framework designed specifically for SaaS applications is not developed. The issue of testing the scalability of SaaS applications remains untouched. This paper discusses the unique features and challenges in testing SaaS applications, and proposes scalability metrics that can be used to test the scalability of SaaS applications. © 2011 IEEE.

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) often adopts multi-tenancy architecture (MTA). However, building a MTA SaaS application requires significant effort, either from scratch or using existing platforms such as *** or Google App Engine. This paper introduces EasySaaS - a SaaS development framework designed to simplify SaaS development. EasySaaS provides two alternatives to build a SaaS application. First alternative allows tenants to publish their application specifications with their requirements, as well as test scripts and let the SaaS providers customize their SaaS solutions to meet tenants' requirements. The second alternative allows tenants to compose the application using templates provided in EasySaaS. This framework alleviates the workload of tenant developers, and provides an easy approach for customization according to tenants' requirements in a collaborative manner. Most services in the platform is domain independent as the domain knowledge are stored in ontology to support cross-domain development. © 2011 IEEE.

Today, CUDA is the de facto standard programming framework to exploit the computational power of graphics processing units (GPUs) to accelerate various kinds of applications. For efficient use of a large GPU-accelerated system, one important mechanism is checkpoint-restart that can be used not only to improve fault tolerance but also to optimize node/slot allocation by suspending a job on one node and migrating the job to another node. Although several checkpoint-restart implementations have been developed so far, they do not support CUDA applications or have some severe limitations for CUDA support. Hence, we present a checkpoint-restart library for CUDA that first deletes all CUDA resources before checkpointing and then restores them right after checkpointing. It is necessary to restore each memory chunk at the same memory address. To this end, we propose a novel technique that replays memory-related API calls. The library supports both CUDA runtime API and CUDA driver API. Moreover, the library is transparent to applications;it is not necessary to recompile the applications for checkpointing. This paper demonstrates that the proposed library can achieve checkpoint-restart of various applications at acceptable overheads, and the library also works for MPI applications such as HPL. © 2011 IEEE.

Mobile cloud is a machine-to-machine service model, where a mobile device can use the cloud for searching, data mining, and multimedia processing. To protect the processed data, security services, i.e., encryption, decryption, authentications, etc., are performed in the cloud. In general, we can classify cloud security services in two categories: Critical Security (CS) service and Normal Security (NS) service. CS service provides strong security protection such as using longer key size, strict security access policies, isolations for protecting data, and so on. The CS service usually occupies more cloud computing resources, however it generates more rewards to the cloud provider since the CS service users need to pay more for using the CS service. With the increase of the number of CS and NS service users, it is important to allocate the cloud resource to maximize the system rewards with the considerations of the cloud resource consumption and incomes generated from cloud users. To address this issue, we propose a Security Service Admission Model (SSAM) based on Semi-Markov Decision Process to model the system reward for the cloud provider. We, first, define system states by a tuple represented by the numbers of cloud users and their associated security service categories, and current event type (i.e., arrival or departure).We then derive the system steady-state probability and service request blocking probability by using the proposed SSAM. Numerical results show that the obtained theoretic probabilities are consistent with our simulation results. © 2011 IEEE.

A virtual reality (VR) based training system for Minimally Invasive Vascular Surgery can be a very useful training tool for improving skills and reducing errors in operation. Computer vision techniques have the potential to be incorporated into a VR based training system for developing low cost, high accuracy and flexible systems in this area. In this paper, we present an interactive 3D training system that uses stereo vision to capture hand movements as the input operations for the system. The standard operations i.e. pushing, pulling and twisting are captured with stereo vision based on the improved Camshift tracking algorithm and parallel alignment model theory to acquire hand gestures information. We present a new approach to calculate virtual pushing/pulling force and turning angle as extra inputs for understanding these essential operations. In addition, an algorithm that enables the simulator to model guidewire and catheter insertions realistically is presented through these basic actions. The experiment results demonstrate that stereo vision based training system is useful and effective for simulating guidewire insertion procedures with low system cost and flexible operations. © 2011 IEEE.

As cloud services proliferate, it becomes difficult to facilitate service composition and testing in clouds. In traditional service-oriented computing, service composition and testing are carried out independently. This paper proposes a new approach to manage services on the cloud so that it can facilitate service composition and testing. The paper uses service implementation selection to facilitate service composition similar to Google's Guice and Spring tools, and apply the group testing technique to identify the oracle, and use the established oracle to perform continuous testing for new services or compositions. The paper extends the existing concept of template based service composition and focus on testing the same workflow of service composition. In addition, all these testing processes can be executed in parallel, and the paper illustrates how to apply service-level MapReduce [1] technique to accelerate the testing process.

Virtual reality based preoperative planning for Minimally Invasive Vascular Intervention is useful, not only for increasing the success rate of operation, but also used as a training tool for improving doctors' skills. In this paper we present an interactive 3D preoperative planning and training system with haptic device. In this system, we present an intelligent trajectory planning algorithm for searching an optimal path automatically along the centerline in two ways: from the suitable inserting point to the specific target location or to the most of objectives. Also, for the purpose of interactive training, we connect the haptic device to the end of guide wire and propose an algorithm that enables the simulator to model guide wire and catheter insertions realistically through essential operations i.e. pushing, pulling and twisting actions. We demonstrate experiment results to show that the 3D preoperative planning and training system is usable for simulating guide wire insertion procedures with complex blood vessel structures. © 2011 IEEE.

In a tupical cloud environment, services wait to serve users' request. If a service receives more requests than it can handle, it needs to acquire additional resources. This paper proposes a new service replications that allows a cloud to adjust its service instance deployments in response to existing and projected service request loads. This approach is called Service-Level MapReduce (SLMR) because itis based on MapReduce, a parallel processing mechanism commonly used in cloud environments such as GAE (Google App Engin. SLMRincludes dynamic service replication and pre-deployed service replication. Furthermore, a passive SLMR approach that depends on the cloud management service (CMS) and an active SLMR approach that does not need the support from CMS will be introduced.

Enabling intuitive interaction in system design remains an art more than a science. This difficulty is exacerbated when the diversity of device and end user group is considered. In this paper, it is argued that conventional interaction modalities are unsuitable in many circumstances and that alternative modalities need be considered. Specifically the case of implicit interaction is considered, and the paper discusses how its use may lead to more satisfactory experiences. Specifically, harnessing implicit interaction in conjunction with the traditional explicit interaction modality, can enable a more intuitive and natural interactive experience. However, the exercise of capturing and interpreting implicit interaction is problematic and is one that lends itself to the adoption of AI techniques. In this position paper, the potential of lightweight intelligent agents is proposed as a model for harmonising the explicit and implicit components of an arbitrary interaction. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.
