Virtual reality based preoperative planning for Minimally Invasive Vascular Intervention is useful, not only for increasing the success rate of operation, but also used as a training tool for improving doctors' skills. In this paper we present an interactive 3D preoperative planning and training system with haptic device. In this system, we present an intelligent trajectory planning algorithm for searching an optimal path automatically along the centerline in two ways: from the suitable inserting point to the specific target location or to the most of objectives. Also, for the purpose of interactive training, we connect the haptic device to the end of guide wire and propose an algorithm that enables the simulator to model guide wire and catheter insertions realistically through essential operations i.e. pushing, pulling and twisting actions. We demonstrate experiment results to show that the 3D preoperative planning and training system is usable for simulating guide wire insertion procedures with complex blood vessel structures.

A virtual reality (VR) based training system for Minimally Invasive Vascular Surgery can be a very useful training tool for improving skills and reducing errors in operation. Computer vision techniques have the potential to be incorporated into a VR based training system for developing low cost, high accuracy and flexible systems in this area. In this paper, we present an interactive 3D training system that uses stereo vision to capture hand movements as the input operations for the system. The standard operations i.e. pushing, pulling and twisting are captured with stereo vision based on the improved Camshift tracking algorithm and parallel alignment model theory to acquire hand gestures information. We present a new approach to calculate virtual pushing/pulling force and turning angle as extra inputs for understanding these essential operations. In addition, an algorithm that enables the simulator to model guide wire and catheter insertions realistically is presented through these basic actions. The experiment results demonstrate that stereo vision based training system is useful and effective for simulating guide wire insertion procedures with low system cost and flexible operations.

Mobile cloud is a machine-to-machine service model, where a mobile device can use the cloud for searching, data mining, and multimedia processing. To protect the processed data, security services, i.e., encryption, decryption, authentications, etc., are performed in the cloud. In general, we can classify cloud security services in two categories: Critical Security (CS) service and Normal Security (NS) service. CS service provides strong security protection such as using longer key size, strict security access policies, isolations for protecting data, and so on. The CS service usually occupies more cloud computing resources, however it generates more rewards to the cloud provider since the CS service users need to pay more for using the CS service. With the increase of the number of CS and NS service users, it is important to allocate the cloud resource to maximize the system rewards with the considerations of the cloud resource consumption and incomes generated from cloud users. To address this issue, we propose a Security Service Admission Model (SSAM) based on Semi-Markov Decision Process to model the system reward for the cloud provider. We, first, define system states by a tuple represented by the numbers of cloud users and their associated security service categories, and current event type (i.e., arrival or departure).We then derive the system steady-state probability and service request blocking probability by using the proposed SSAM. Numerical results show that the obtained theoretic probabilities are consistent with our simulation results.

The degradation of solar photovoltaic module is associated with the outdoor weather condition at the product's use location. In this paper we propose a practical method to integrate this auxiliary information into the reliability prediction. Multi-year field data of degradation measurements of PV modules installed in Mesa, Arizona, are analyzed. Temperature is found to be a significant factor that influences the PV degradation process.

Cognitive Radio (CR) promises to provide better spectrum utilization and increase the availability of (on demand) broadband access to the Network of the Future. CR relies on devices that can sense their (radio) environment, understand it, and model it, so that they can exploit the spectrum through appropriate transmission parameters (in the space, time, and frequency domains) that do not interfere with legacy and/or licensed devices using the same spectrum in the same general area. According to the CR paradigm, the use of the spectrum that is not used by primary (licensed) users is opportunistic. Secondary users sense the spectrum and decide to use it on their own, possibly following additional rules and protocols. Because multiple such CR devices (secondary users) can find themselves in the same area and compete for the same spectrum, the question that arises is whether these devices behave "fairly" and appropriately. The opportunities are there for competing CR devices to try to grab more resources through the spreading of misinformation and "impersonation" of licensed devices.

Multi-layered social networks reflect complex relationships existing in modern interconnected IT systems. In such a network each pair of nodes may be linked by many edges that correspond to different communication or collaboration user activities. Multi-layered degree centrality for multi-layered social networks is presented in the paper. Experimental studies were carried out on data collected from the real Web 2.0 site. The multi-layered social network extracted from this data consists of ten distinct layers and the network analysis was performed for different degree centralities measures. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper is aimed at educational technology specialists who work with multicultural and international projects in developing countries. Educational technology is increasingly portrayed as a cure for the developing countries' educational challenges. But as countries differ much from each other, and as developing regions differ in many ways from industrialized regions, naïve technology transfer just does not work. We propose a tentative framework for a systemic view of educational technology in developing regions. In that framework, we present 100 pedagogical, socioeconomic, and technical considerations that educational technology developers may need to re-think in projects in developing regions. We propose further research on developing the current framework into a proper analysis tool.

During the past few years much effort has been put into developing interoperable grid models suitable of defining a decentralized control setting. Such environments may define new rules and actions to internal Virtual Organisation (VO) members and therefore posing new challenges towards to an extended cooperation model of grids. Particularly, VO members' knowledge may be expressed in the form of intelligent agents thus providing a more autonomous solution of communicating members. Herein we present a mobile agent middleware for Grid interoperable infrastructures. Facing the enlarging scale of Grid, the proposed middleware aims to extend the knowledge of a specific neighbouring of Grid members (VO) in relation to the addresses and the physical resources of known and unknown nodes which may join the Grid VO. The internal data are structured in a rational sequence and stored within a public profile of each member called metadata snapshot profile. The middleware is designed by employing the Java Agent Development (JADE) framework in which mobile agents are travelling throughout the domain and by collecting and updating internal data they extend the size of the VO. The interoperable standard is achieved by using the Critical Friends Community (CFC) model, as the mean to fulfil the inter-cooperation model.

Service-oriented architecture and cloud computing have become the prevalent computing paradigm. In this paradigm, computing resources can be accessed like other utility services available in today's society. In the meantime, robotics applications are joining the trend. More and more robot applications are shifting from manufacture to non-manufacture and service industries. However, for the on-demand supply of the large-scale heterogeneous robots, It is still a problem have not yet been studied, including the fundamental management and efficiency issues in using of these resources. In this paper, we design a framework of "Robot Cloud Center" (RCC) following the general cloud computing paradigm to address the current limitations in capacity and versatility of robotic applications. In this framework, a robot can be provided as a service just like a public utility service so that everyone can access the powerful robotic services easily, efficiently, and cheaply. Based on a given scenario, a robot scheduling algorithm in RCC is proposed to take advantage of the heterogeneous robot resources to meet the end user's requirement with the minimum cost.
