This workshop is aimed at exploring the issues at the intersection of feminist thinking and human computer interaction. Both feminism and HCI have made important contributions to social science in the past several decades, but though their potential for overlap seem high, they have not engaged each other directly until recently. In this workshop we will explore diverse-and contentious-ways that feminist perspectives can support user research, design ideation and problem framing, sketching and prototyping, and design criticism and evaluation. The workshop will include fast-moving mini-panels and hands-on group exercises emphasizing feminist interaction criticism and design ideation.

Cloud platform provides an infrastructure for resource sharing, software hosting and service delivering in a pay-per-use approach. To test the cloud-based software systems, techniques and tools are necessary to address unique quality concerns of the cloud infrastructure such as massive scalability and dynamic configuration. The tools can also be built on the cloud platform to benefit from virtualized platform and services, massive resources, and parallelized execution. The paper makes a survey of representative approaches and typical tools for cloud testing. It identifies the needs for cloud testing tools including multi-layer testing, SLA-based testing, large scale simulation, and on-demand test environment. To address the needs, it investigates the new architecture and techniques for designing testing tools for the cloud and in the cloud. Tool implementations are surveyed considering different approaches including migrated conventional tools, research tools, commercial tools and facilities like benchmark and testbed. Based on the analysis of state-of-the-art practices, the paper further investigates future trend of testing tool research and development from both capability and usability perspectives.

This paper analyses different definitions of mobile learning which have been proposed by various researchers. The most distinctive features of mobile learning are extracted to propose a new definition for Mobile Educational Mixed Reality Games (MEMRG). A questionnaire and a quantifying scale are designed to assist the game developers in designing MEMRG. A new psycho-pedagogical approach to teaching is proposed for MEMRG. This methodology is based on the theme of ‘conversation’ between different actors of the learning community with the objective of building the architectural framework for MEMRG. © 2011, International Federation of Engineering Education Societies (IFEES). One of the most important objectives of a wireless network is to facilitate a prediction of users' mobility regardless of their point of attachment to the network. In indoor environments the effective users' motion prediction system and wireless localization technology play an important role in all aspects of people's daily lives. In this paper we propose an activity-based continuous-time Markov model to define and predict the human movement patterns. This model is a simple extension of an Activity based Mobility Prediction algorithm using Markov modeling (AMPuMM) technique. Both models are experimentally evaluated in realistic small university campus scenario. The obtained results show us the high efficiency of the jump methodology in the prediction of the students' activities in the indoor campus environment. © 2011 IEEE.

The ability to realize an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to improve driver safety has attracted huge interests from researchers this decade. Vehicular Communication covering vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to- infrastructure (V2I) communication supported by ITS provide ubiquitous internet connectivity among the vehicles to improve safety for drivers. In addition to carrying driver safety messages, such as emergency warning messages, accident alerts and road work messages, multi-hop routing carrying the information for driver's comfort such as long route traffic information, on road advertisements and parking assistance are also an important and challenging task in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET). This paper presents a multi-hop long range transmission of packets among the vehicles on the basis of reduced transmission hops by choosing the most suitable vehicle within the transmission range for packet transmission. The algorithm proposed in this paper, Fastest Multi-Hop Routing Scheme (FMHR) is evaluated based on incoming and outgoing throughput and compared with another multi-hop transmission algorithm [6] using different radio access technology. The simulation environment used for the evaluation of proposed algorithm is NCTUns-6.0.

The growing body of sustainable HCI shows that new interfaces may increase awareness and motivate action for environmental impact. Most of this research has been aimed at consumer decision-making, leaving out many professional domains. This workshop broadens the scope of HCI research to consider new user groups including professional users, educators, designers and engineers, governments and NGO's. We propose a broad approach to sustainable HCI for emerging domains: visible - actionable - sustainable. In order to effect sustainable change, new interfaces need to make issues visible in order to promote actionable decisions towards socially and environmentally sustainable ends. These approaches can support sustainable decision-making in product design and a variety of sectors. This workshop will gather interdisciplinary case studies to help identify emerging domains of where sustainable interaction design could provide important social and environmental benefit. The expected outcome is the start of a pattern language for sustainability solutions to the most promising application domains. Patterns are named solutions to recurring problems with enough flexibility to be applied in new contexts. Pattern languages have been developed for architecture and urban planning, object-oriented programming, change management, HCI, and pedagogy. We choose to structure the workshop around the concepts and techniques of pattern languages because because they focus the attention of the community on creating and sharing expertise on what works in general and in a form and format that is useful to designers who are working on specific solutions for specific contexts. The workshop will consider submissions to inform a pattern language from a number of potential application domains for sustainable interaction design including professional users, education, food and drink, marketing and sales, governments, NGOs, designers and engineers.

MicroRNAs, by regulating the expression of hundreds of target genes, play critical roles in developmental biology and the etiology of numerous diseases, including cancer. As vast amounts of microRNA expression profile data are now publicly available, the integration of those data sets with gene expression profiles represents an extremely active area of life science research. However, the ability to conduct genome wide microRNA-mRNA (gene) integration currently requires sophisticated, high-end informatics tools, significant expertise in bioinformatics and computer science to carry out the complex integration analysis. In addition, increased computing infrastructure capabilities are essential in order to accommodate large data sets. In this study, we have extending BioVLAB cloud workbench to develop an environment for the integrated analysis of microRNA and mRNA expression data, named BioVLAB-MMIA. The workbench facilitates computations on the Amazon EC2 and S3 resources orchestrated by XBaya Workflow Suite. The advantages of BioVLAB-MMIA over the web-based MMIA system include: 1) readily expanded as new computational tools become available; 2) easily modifiable by re-configuring graphic icons in the workflow; 3) on-demand cloud computing resources can be used on an as needed basis; 4) distributed orchestration supports complex and long running workflows asynchronously.

The utility computing model introduced by cloud computing combined with the rich set of cloud infrastructure services offers a very viable alternative to traditional servers and computing clusters. MapReduce distributed data processing architecture has become the weapon of choice for data-intensive analyses in the clouds and in commodity clusters due to its excellent fault tolerance features, scalability and the ease of use. Currently, there are several options for using MapReduce in cloud environments, such as using MapReduce as a service, setting up one's own MapReduce cluster on cloud instances, or using specialized cloud MapReduce runtimes that take advantage of cloud infrastructure services. In this paper, we introduce AzureMapReduce, a novel MapReduce runtime built using the Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure services. AzureMapReduce architecture successfully leverages the high latency, eventually consistent, yet highly scalable Azure infrastructure services to provide an efficient, on demand alternative to traditional MapReduce clusters. Further we evaluate the use and performance of MapReduce frameworks, including AzureMapReduce, in cloud environments for scientific applications using sequence assembly and sequence alignment as use cases. © 2010 IEEE.

Greece, via its PRODEX membership intends to meaningfully participate to the instrument development of a flagship ESA mission, the Solar Orbiter (SolO). This involvement pertains to hardware development for SolO's Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-rays (STIX), namely, STIX's movable attenuator. SolO will allow close-up and high-latitude studies of our mother star, the Sun, based mostly on remote-sensing measurements (imaging). STIX is a critical SolO instrument, enabling one of its major science goals: understanding and acceleration of electrons at the Sun and their transport into interplanetary space. The attenuator, or shutter, that will be developed by the Greek team, is a critical component of the STIX instrument. Attenuators are dictated by the substantial dynamical range of incident X-ray fluxes from solar flares: the largest X-ray flares can give as many as 10 5 more count rates in X-ray photons compared to those of the smallest microflare that STIX can detect. lt is proposed that two mechanisms are developed for a comparative study. First, a mechanism based on sensitive Shape Memory Alloy actuators and, second, one based on a piezoelectric actuator module. Both mechanisms will be designed and manufactured and then tested in vacuum and alternating high-low temperature conditions. Evaluation of reliability and accuracy in assembly and operation will follow. A vibrating table will be used for the dynamical analysis of the mechanism and independent strength tests of the various parts of the mechanism will follow.
