Mobile technology is becoming increasingly widespread in museums and cultural heritage sites, and many institutions have already developed applications that can be downloaded on mobile phones. Amongst these, iPhone Applications are certainly the most popular. The research briefly presented here describes the phases of the development of an iPhone application to interactively present the story of the people and places depicted on the Summer War of Osaka byo̅bu (traditional Japanese wooden folding screens) currently displayed at Osaka Castle Museum, Osaka City, Japan. The iPhone application will also be integrated with the Tiled Display Wall system of the Knowledge Creating Communication Research Center of NICT (Kyoto) to test various interaction functionalities.

Background: It has been apparent in the last few years that small non coding RNAs (ncRNA) play a very significant role in biological regulation. Among these microRNAs (miRNAs), 22-23 nucleotide small regulatory RNAs, have been a major object of study as these have been found to be involved in some basic biological processes. So far about 706 miRNAs have been identified in humans alone. However, it is expected that there may be many more miRNAs encoded in the human genome. In this report, a "context-sensitive" Hidden Markov Model (CSHMM) to represent miRNA structures has been proposed and tested extensively. We also demonstrate how this model can be used in conjunction with filters as an ab initio method for miRNA identification. Results: The probabilities of the CSHMM model were estimated using known human miRNA sequences. A classifier for miRNAs based on the likelihood score of this "trained" CSHMM was evaluated by: (a) cross-validation estimates using known human sequences, (b) predictions on a dataset of known miRNAs, and (c) prediction on a dataset of non coding RNAs. The CSHMM is compared with two recently developed methods, miPred and CID-miRNA. The results suggest that the CSHMM performs better than these methods. In addition, the CSHMM was used in a pipeline that includes filters that check for the presence of EST matches and the presence of Drosha cutting sites. This pipeline was used to scan and identify potential miRNAs from the human chromosome 19. It was also used to identify novel miRNAs from small RNA sequences of human normal leukocytes obtained by the Deep sequencing (Solexa) methodology. A total of 49 and 308 novel miRNAs were predicted from chromosome 19 and from the small RNA sequences respectively Conclusion: The results suggest that the CSHMM is likely to be a useful tool for miRNA discovery either for analysis of individual sequences or for genome scan. Our pipeline, consisting of a CSHMM and filters to reduce false positives shows promise as

This paper describes the application hosting services (AHS) that is one of software component of multiple grid environments middleware developed by RENKEI (REsources liNKage for E-scIence) project. The purpose of this middleware realizing the federate/share resources (computers, storages, databases and applications) distributed among multiple grid environments, such as research laboratories, national computer centers and international grids etc, AHS provides repository of application information to the research community created by grid virtual organization (VO). Community members can share the applications and their execution environment on the multiple grid environments.

Many areas of science are seeing a data deluge coming from new instruments, myriads of sensors and exponential growth in electronic records. We take two examples - one the analysis of gene sequence data (35339 Alu sequences) and other a study of medical information (over 100,000 patient records) in Indianapolis and their relationship to Geographic and Information System and Census data available for 635 Census Blocks in Indianapolis. We look at initial processing (such as Smith Waterman dissimilarities), clustering (using robust deterministic annealing) and Multi Dimensional Scaling to map high dimension data to 3D for convenient visualization. We show how scaling pipelines can be produced that can be implemented using either cloud technologies or MPI which are compared. This study illustrates challenges in integrating data exploration tools with a variety of different architectural requirements and natural programming models. We present preliminary results for end to end study of two complete applications.

Allowing robots to communicate naturally with humans is an important goal for social robotics. Most approaches have focused on building high-level probabilistic cognitive models. However, research in cognitive science shows that people often build common ground for communication with each other by seeking and providing evidence of understanding through behaviors like mimicry. Predictive State Representations (PSRs) allow one to build explicit, low-level models of the expected outcomes of actions, and are therefore well-suited for tasks that require providing such evidence of understanding. Using human-robot shadow puppetry as a prototype interaction study, we show that PSRs can be used successfully to both model human interactions, and to allow a robot to learn on-line how to engage a human in an interesting interaction.

Pendaphonics is a tangible physical-digital-sonic environment and interactive system that engages users in individual, collaborative, group, and distributed interactive experiences. The development of this system, as an element of urban revitalization and as a trans-disciplinary research endeavor, presents strategies for the design and evaluation of low-cost, flexible, and distributed tangible interaction architectures for public engagement, expression, and performance. Pendaphonics is installed in a public media arts space, where over 200 people experienced it during the environment's opening event. Internationally, interaction laboratories at five research universities are advancing explorations of Pendaphonics. This paper presents the development process and findings from observation and evaluation of people using Pendaphonics;diverse social interaction patterns among performers and the general public are discussed. In particular, we identify the repeated and sustained invitation to interact - created by the cyclic motion of a pendulum's simple harmonic oscillation - as a new tangible interaction modality for human computer interaction, in 3D physical-digital-sonic environments. An investigation of this and related elements of Pendaphonics' large-scale tangible interaction scenarios are articulated, along with descriptions of the system's broad potential as a compositional and choreographic tool;an educational exhibit and classroom manipulative;and as an interface that facilitates playful interaction, exploration, discovery and creativity. Pendaphonics is a tangible physical-digital-sonic environment and interactive system that motivates children and adults to be physically active and explorative. The development of this system presents a strategy for the design and evaluation of a low-cost, flexible, large scale tangible system that is engaging for children and adults alike. Pendaphonics has been installed in a public new media arts space, where over 200 people have interacted with it. Research literature has argued the need for a methodology to measure security assurance levels of a system as vital in order to maintain and improve the overall system security. Building on our close examination of the existing approaches for IT Information assurance, this paper proposes a riskbased security assurance metrics and aggregation techniques to be incorporated in a methodology for the evaluation of IT systems security assurance.
