To create an understanding of enterprises and the ways they do business, a starting point could be to identify the main actors and the values transferred between them. Business models are created in order to make clear who the business actors are in a business case and to make their relations explicit. The relations are formulated in terms of values exchanged between the actors. The purpose of the work reported in this paper is to create a better understanding of business models by identifying basic notions used in such models. It does so by constructing a common ontology based on three established business model ontologies: e3-value, REA, and BMO. By means of a careful analysis of these ontologies a conceptual schema is created that defines the common concepts. An example is worked out that explains how the common ontology should be understood.

Recently, large-scale protein-protein interactions were recovered using the similar two-hybrid system for the model systems. This information allows us to investigate the protein interaction network from a systematic point of view. However, experimentally determined interactions are susceptible to errors. A previous assessment estimated that only ~10% of the interactions can be supported by more than one independent experiment, and about half of the interactions may be false positives. These false positives might unnecessarily link unrelated proteins, resulting in huge apparent interaction clusters, which complicate elucidation for the biological importance of these interactions. Address this problem, we present an approach to integrate, assess and characterize all available protein-protein interactions in model organisms yeast and fly. We first integrate all available protein-protein interaction databases of yeast and fly, and merge all the datasets. We then use machine learning techniques to score the reliability for each interaction, and to rigorously validate the scoring scheme of yeast protein-protein interactions from different aspects. Our results show that this scoring scheme provides a good basis for selecting reliable protein-protein interaction dataset

The Huai River basin, in China is subjected to strong human pressure, and is geographically, meteorologically, and therefore hydrologically, very heterogeneous;it faces severe water management problems, concerning flooding and irrigation in particular. The Chinese local authorities are responsible for the management of the basin and the design of the infrastructure;a comprehensive water resources assessment using remote sensing technology and integrated hydrological modelling could be a great help to find long term solutions to the pending problems. In this paper, an attempt at developing such a complete water resources assessment is proposed, focusing first on a sub-catchment, the Shiguanhe watershed, which is well representative of the heterogeneity of the whole Huai river basin. The tools for this assessment are described here, both in hydrological modeling and in remote sensing. Meanwhile, a first attempt at modelling the Shiguanhe basin will help to define future developments that would allow these tools to be adapted to the Huai River basin and its complex hydraulic system, including many dams and irrigation channels. For this purpose, the MODCOU model was used;it is a distributed hydrological model using a conceptual reservoir-based approach. The processing of a digital elevation model first serves as a basis to build the structure that MODCOU needs;the model is then run with basic land-use and meteorological data, which might later be made more accurate through remote sensing data processing. A new function was developed within the MODCOU model to take the large artificial reservoirs into account. The first results provided a reasonable agreement between the measured and calculated flow at the outlet of the basin, and also showed the attention that has to be paid to the complex irrigation system, and to additional improvements that are required to accurately model such a complex system.

There is a "folk belief" that certain personalities fit with particular systems development roles: however, there is little evidence to confirm this supposition. As part of a larger study an XP development team was investigated using a repertory grid approach (this is discussed in detail) to determine whether coherent personalities and characteristics emerge for different roles. The results, which are inevitably limited, suggest that this is the case. Further work remains to be done to build a large corpus of data for future analysis before firm mappings can be made between appropriate personality characteristics and software development roles. Within academic programmes real-life learning experiences can be provided in a number of ways: Internships/placements, group projects and individual projects. A comparison is made between the mechanisms that can be employed in programmes with a duration of several years compared with intensive taught masters programmes which have a total duration of 12 to 14 months. Details are presented of the range of taught masters programmes in computing that are offered at the University of Sunderland with emphasis on practical parameters and assessment. Actual problems and challenges that have had to be addressed in a changing academic climate are detailed. Finally some overall conclusions and outstanding questions are presented.
