Information is one of the most valuable resources in today's society, therefore the process of information seeking in electronic environments is one of the most crucial processes that can help a citizen to achieve a better quality of life. However, access to information in electronic forms is so far difficult for blind people, but new publicly available electronic environments, particularly the World Wide Web (WWW), provide great potential to overcome the difficulties that blind people have in accessing information. In this paper, we present BrowserTree, a specialised voice web browser that we have designed and developed for blind users of the WWW. BrowserTree offers to an unsighted user all the facilities (e.g. make bookmarks, follow links) that a sighted user has using a "normal" web browser. BrowserTree's main difference in comparison to other specialised voice web browsers is our effort to provide a "reading mode" which allows an unsighted user to browse a large WWW document at a "concept" level utilising existing structure of a web page. Using this reading mode the user can acquire quicker a better outlook-overview of the web page under examination.

In software/content development in intercultural environments, collaboration among participants and effective administration are crucial for overall successful projects. Various tools are used to achieve the collaboration and the administration of the project: no single groupware is sufficient for both collaboration support and management. Therefore, interoperability among various tools employed in one project is essential for efficient collaboration. To establish semantic interoperability of collaboration tools, we have designed an RDF tag set that can function as vocabulary to describe information interoperably among the tools. In this paper, we propose a tag set to describe information in intercultural projects and show how the data in collaboration tools and project management tools are integrated with those semantic tags. With the tag set and the supporting method, it is expected that the members and the administrators do not have to pay much efforts to keep the collaboration status.

We consider the problem of approximately counting integral flows in a network. We show that there is an fpras based on volume estimation if all capacities are sufficiently large, generalising a result of Dyer, Kannan and Mount (1997). We apply this to approximating the number of contingency tables with prescribed cell bounds when the number of rows is constant, but the row sums, column sums and cell bounds may be arbitrary, We provide an fpras for this problem via a combination of dynamic programming and volume estimation. This generalises an algorithm of Cryan and Dyer (2002) for standard contingency tables, but the analysis here is considerably more intricate. Copyright 2005 ACM.

This paper describes the use of empathic agents in the development of an interactive pedagogical drama for the recognition and treatment of depression in adolescents. The primary aim of our work is to provide a clearer understanding of depression, and the way in which sufferers. individual responses to external factors have a negative impact on their emotions. A review of current research into depression and its treatment is presented followed by a review of contemporary computer-based forms of treatment. Finally, we try to bring together these different lines of research and present the hypothesis that the use of empathic interaction by social agents can provide a useful forum for those suffering depressive episodes to obtain treatment. We conclude by presenting the development of a pre-scripted prototype along with proposed testing and evaluation strategies and a discussion of our findings.

As microarchitectural and system complexity grows, comprehending system behavior becomes increasingly difficult, and often requires obtaining and sifting through voluminous event traces or coordinating results from multiple, non-localized sources. Owl is a proposed framework that overcomes limitations faced by traditional performance counters and monitoring facilities in dealing with such complexity by pervasively deploying programmable monitoring elements throughout a system. The design exploits reconfigurable or programmable logic to realize hardware monitors located at event sources, such as memory buses. These monitors run and writeback results autonomously with respect to the CPU, mitigating the system impact of interrupt-driven monitoring or the need to communicate irrelevant events to higher levels of the system. The monitors are designed to snoop any kind of system transaction, e.g., within the core, on a bus, across the wire, or within I/O devices. Copyright 2005 ACM.

In this paper, we compare the performance of SBOD and MBOD architectures for storage systems using a command profile based on the Storage Performance Council (SPC-1) Benchmark. The performance comparisons include changes in the strip size, in the number of disks and in the intra-enclosure transmission rate (2Gbps and 4Gbps). We show that performance is maximised with 16kbyte strips and that SBOD performance is up to 120% better than MBOD for large strips;the MBOD becoming bandwidth limited at 2Gbps. We also show that an SBOD with an intra-enclosure transmission rate of 2Gbps matches the performance achievable by 4Gbps MBOD/SBOD when loaded with SPC-1 traffic.

In this paper, basic principles are presented and an algorithm for extracting document content summary for Greek language, by using statistic method. The algorithm presented is based on grammatical rules and semantic information dedicated for Greek language. The algorithm has been tested on a variety of news articles and produces satisfactory results for a variety of thematic subjects. Apart from the algorithm, a test case is presented to validate its performance

The paper studies the packet delay distribution of the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) protocol. DCF treats packets in an unfair manner. Results indicate that, in large networks, most packets have very low time delays, some packets have delays close to the average value and a small number of packets experience extremely high delays. We study the DCF delay distribution by developing a mathematical model that calculates the important properties of the constituent curves of the delay distribution curve, namely the probability that a packet is successfully transmitted from a particular backoff stage and the average delay of the successfully transmitted packets from this backoff stage. The model is simple, gives an insight into the internal mechanisms of DCF and applies to both basic and RTS/CTS access mechanisms. The accuracy of the analytical model is verified by simulations. Analytical results are presented that explore the effect of network size and of the initial contention window size on the fairness of DCF regarding the distribution of packet delays.
