The concerns over energy crisis and climate change caused by the excessive consumption of fossil fuels and the associated emission of greenhouse gases, have driven many countries to develop policies for an energy transition into zero-carbon energy sources, essentially aiming at decarbonizing their energy systems. Among various renewable sources, hydrogen has been hailed as an ideal alternative to provide secure, cost-effective, and non-polluting energy. In recent years, there has been noteworthy progress in hydrogen electrochemical conversion and utilization techniques and devices, including water electrolyzers, proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), etc. Each of these technologies has yielded a series of encouraging advances. To showcase these recent advances, Frontiers in Energy is launching a special issue titled “electrochemical conversion and utilization of hydrogen energy”.

Soil erosion is a prominent environmental problem in karst *** the spatiotemporal variability of soil erosion and the factors that influence soil erosion is of great significance for regional soil erosion prevention and ***,the mechanisms influencing the characteristic features of the karst basins,such as bedrock exposure and lithology,still need to be further *** study used GIS technology,the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation model,Getis–Ord Gi*,and partial least squares regression(PLSR)to identify the dominant factors influencing soil erosion and the spatiotemporal variability of soil erosion in 31 sub-basins of the Dabang River Basin(DRB),a typical karst area of Southwest China,from 2010 to *** results indicated that soil erosion in the DRB from 2010 to 2020 was generally decreasing,the mean soil erosion in the DRB in 2010,2015 and 2020 was 18.46,16.51 and 15.29 t ha^(-1)a^(-1),*** the study period,the area of slight erosion increased by 26.39%(706.54 km^(2)),while severe erosion enlarged by 26.36 km^(2).Spatially,the DRB was primarily affected by medium and slight soil *** hot spot areas of soil erosion(key control areas)were mainly concentrated in the central and southern parts of the basin,decreasing each year,and the area of soil erosion hot pots has decreased from 43.22%to 20.60%.PLSR decoupling results show that elevation,bedrock exposure,land use type,interbedded limestone and clastic rock,and vegetation coverage were identified as the key variables affecting soil erosion,explaining 52.8%of soil erosion variability,with a high value of the Variable Importance on Projection(VIP)more than *** results can be used as a reference for comprehensive control of soil erosion and water loss in the basin.

High efficient removal of antibiotics during nutriments recovery for biomass production poses a major technical challenge for photosynthetic microbial biofilm-based wastewater treatment since antibiotics are always co-exist with nutriments in wastewater and resist biodegradation due to their strong biotoxicity and *** this study,we make a first attempt to enhance metronidazole(MNZ)removal from wastewater using electrochemistry-activated binary-species photosynthetic biofilm of Rhodopseudomonas Palustris(***)and Chlorella vulgaris(***)by cultivating them under different applied *** results showed that application of external potentials of-0.3,0 and 0.2 V led to 11,33 and 26-fold acceleration in MNZ removal,respectively,as compared to that of potential *** extent of enhancement in MNZ removal was positively correlated to the intensities of photosynthetic current produced under different externally applied *** binary-species photoelectrogenic biofilm exhibited 18 and 6-fold higher MNZ removal rate than that of single-species of *** and ***,respectively,due to the enhanced metabolic interaction between *** of an external potential of 0V significantly promoted the accumulation of tryptophan and tyrosine-like compounds as well as humic acid in ex-tracellular polymeric substance,whose concentrations were 7.4,7.1 and 2.0-fold higher than those produced at potential free,contributing to accelerated adsorption and reductive and photosensitive degradation of MNZ.

This study examined the evolution of morphology and nanostructure of soot particles from the plasma-flame interaction for various gas flow *** current study used both optical diagnostic and sampling methods to explore the soot production and combustion *** particles were characterized at the same positions downstream from the flame zone by thermophoretic sampling and transmission electron ***,X-ray diffraction analysis,and thermogravimetric analysis were performed to study the nanostructure and oxidation reactivity of soot.A reduction in soot concentration was found with the plasma addition,which illustrated an inhibition effect of plasma on soot *** increased gas flow rate promoted soot concentration since a growing number of carbons participated in the combustion *** on the gas flow rate(carbon content)variation and plasma activation,either liquid-like soot material with irregularly shaped protrusions or chain-like structure,or a mixture of both,were generated from the diffusion *** soot produced by plasma-flame interaction also demonstrated a high correlation between nanostructure and *** soot from lower carbon content with plasma activation had a shorter fringe length and larger fringe tortuosity related to higher oxidation *** the contrary,soot from the highest carbon content without plasma-flame interaction exhibited prevalent fullerene-like nanostructures with evident large or small shells and also had a higher carbonization degree resulting in lower oxidation reactivity.
