Privacy-preserving filtering, control and optimization for industrial cyber-physical systems

Industrial cyber-physical systems closely integrate physical processes with cyberspace, enabling real-time exchange of various information about system dynamics, sensor outputs, and control decisions. The connection between cyberspace and physical processes results in the exposure of industrial production information to unprecedented security risks. It is imperative to develop suitable strategies to ensure cyber security while meeting basic performance *** the perspective of control engineering, this review presents the most up-to-date results for privacy-preserving filtering,control, and optimization in industrial cyber-physical systems. Fashionable privacy-preserving strategies and mainstream evaluation metrics are first presented in a systematic manner for performance evaluation and engineering *** discussion discloses the impact of typical filtering algorithms on filtering performance, specifically for privacy-preserving Kalman filtering. Then, the latest development of industrial control is systematically investigated from consensus control of multi-agent systems, platoon control of autonomous vehicles as well as hierarchical control of power systems. The focus thereafter is on the latest privacy-preserving optimization algorithms in the framework of consensus and their applications in distributed economic dispatch issues and energy management of networked power systems. In the end, several topics for potential future research are highlighted.

A Semantic-Based Approach for Self-Configuring Smart Home Systems Using Feedback-Based Reinforcement Learning

As urban populations grow, smart home technology has become a key enabler for enhancing energy efficiency, comfort, and convenience in residential environments. However, existing smart home implementations often struggle to adapt to complex and dynamic user needs due to issues like device heterogeneity, rigid pre-set solutions, and limited interoperability. This paper presents a novel semantic-based self-configuring framework that captures the functional, operational, state, and characteristic perspectives of smart home devices, facilitating seamless interconnection and interoperability across heterogeneous devices. The proposed framework uses service entity, that is semantically modeled to act as a linker and mediator between applications and devices to enable dynamic scheduling and control based on application requests and user preferences. To enable continuous adaptation and learning, the proposed approach formulates the self-configuration problem as a Markov Decision Process (MDP), with parameters instantiated using semantic information and rules. A novel Feedback-based Reinforcement Learning approach is then proposed to adjust the reward function and state transition parameters based on user feedback. The performances of the proposed approach against a bench-marked fixed and rule-based mechanisms are demonstrated through simulation. © 2014 IEEE.

Harnessing Trend Theory to Enhance Distributed Proximal Point Algorithm Approaches for Multi-Area Economic Dispatch Optimization

This article proposes an approach to addressing the problem of minimum initial marking (MuIM) estimation for labeled Petri nets (LPNs). We introduce the important concept of a label synthesis net for LPNs and develop a method for predicting the minimum number of tokens. By using this prediction method, we develop an algorithm that has polynomial complexity in the length of the observed label sequence for estimating MuIMs. An illustrative example is provided to show the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed approach. Moreover, experimental results demonstrate its advantage over existing work. Finally, we provide a comparison of some representative studies in the literature for MuIM estimation. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

The self-supervised monocular depth estimation algorithm obtains excellent results in outdoor environments. However, traditional self-supervised depth estimation methods often suffer from edge blurring in complex textured regions and the loss of depth information in pixels within weakly-textured areas. To enhance the perception ability of the deep network for complex textured areas and the accuracy of depth estimation in weakly-textured regions, the following methods are proposed in this paper. First of all, the image activity measure (IAM) is used to segment the image features. Based on the multi-directional distribution of image contours, the network's perception ability has been improved, resulting in effective enhancement of depth estimation in complex regions. Furthermore, a new loss function called depth consistency loss (DCL) is proposed, which is based on recursive recurrent networks. The DCL aims to measure the similarity between the output images of the first-order network and the second-order network, and the network's constraint on weak-texture regions has been strengthened. By employing this approach, the accuracy of estimating depth information in weakly-textured regions can be enhanced. Through adequate experimentation on the public indoor datasets, the results show that our network outperforms the compared algorithms in terms of accuracy and visualization of predicted depth. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

With growing awareness of privacy protection, Federated Learning (FL) in vehicular network scenarios effectively addresses privacy concerns, leading to the development of Federated Vehicular Networks (FVN). In FVN, vehicles maintain a global model by transmitting local models and iterative processing, resulting in significant communication overhead. In the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), as the majority of the spectrum resources are allocated to Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication, vehicles engaged in FL encounter uplink interference when these resources are reused. This compromises the efficacy of FL vehicle communication. To address this issue, we propose FedCDC, a new Federated learning framework with adaptive weight Clustering with knowledge Distillation and Channel sharing-based resource allocation. First, we implement a communication compression strategy based on clustering and distillation to alleviate transmission load. Then, we develop a resource allocation strategy to maximize the Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) for both FL vehicles and V2V groups, which investigates two critical components: channel pairing and power coordination. We formulate the optimization issue as a multi-objective optimization problem that is solved offline using the MIDACO solver. Due to the dynamic characteristics of FVN, we employ a Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MADDPG) to enhance efficiency. Finally, extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach significantly reduces data transmission and offers an efficient resource coordination plan, thus improving FL communication efficiency and ensuring the Quality of Service (QoS) for both V2V groups and FL vehicles. © 2014 IEEE.

Containers are widely embraced in the era of cloud computing due to their lightweight, flexible, and easy-to-deploy nature. Nevertheless, their shared kernel characteristics render them susceptible to potential security risks. This paper proposes an anomaly detection method for containers based on system call sequences, employing the attention mechanism and convolutional neural networks. The method utilizes data generated by running container processes to detect anomalies in process behavior. It was validated using publicly available datasets and real-world attack data. The results demonstrate the method’s capability to detect anomalies in the behavior of in-container processes, outperforming comparative methods such as Random Forest and LSTM in metrics such as precision and accuracy. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Quantum anonymous selection and its applications

In this paper, we introduce what we believe to be a novel cryptographic primitive in secure multiparty computation, called anonymous selection (AS). This cryptographic primitive involves the random and anonymous selection of one participant from a group, ensuring that no one, except the selected individual, can identify who has been chosen. The AS concept holds significant potential for simplifying complex cryptographic tasks by enabling their implementation in a sequential manner rather than a synchronous one. To develop an efficient and practical AS protocol, we first propose two new primitive protocols: a measurement-device-independent (MDI) quantum secure multiparty XOR protocol and an MDI quantum collision detection protocol. Leveraging these protocols, we construct an innovative quantum AS protocol that achieves information-theoretic security under the semi-honest model. Furthermore, we explore the practical applications of the quantum AS protocol and present a feasible quantum protocol for secure multiparty logical multiplication. Our theoretical analysis and simulation experiments collectively demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed quantum protocols. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement.

Cross-Domain Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Anonymous Communications Based on Classical Blockchain

How to guarantee the anonymity of the sender and the receiver is a fundamental privacy requirement in various novel applications. However, there are still some practically intractable problems to implement anonymous communications over long distances in current classical/quantum networks. In this paper, we first design a novel hybrid network architecture for cross-domain anonymous communications, which consists of multiple separated ring quantum networks combined with a classical blockchain (i.e., classical network). The hybrid network integrates good advantages of classical networks and quantum networks, especially in terms of security and privacy. Furthermore, we present two practical and feasible measurement-device-independent quantum anonymous communication protocols for transmitting (sharing) a classical message from a sender in one domain to a remote receiver (multiple remote receivers) in another domain based on the hybrid network. Compared with related protocols, proposed quantum protocols have better feasibility and scalability. © 2013 IEEE.

Multi-scale network for single image deblurring based on ensemble learning module

In this paper, we have identified two primary issues with current multi-scale image deblurring methods. On the one hand, the blurring scale is ignored. On the other hand, the context information of images is not fully utilized, and the spatial detail information of images is lost. To better solve the above problems, on top of that, this paper proposes a multi-scale network for single image deblurring. The designed network contains two parts: 1) Ensemble Learning Model: The Weak Learning Model in this module connects multiple weak learners in series to increase network depth. Moreover, through multi-scale feature ensemble module, the output features and intermediate features of different weak learner are integrated, and finally strong learner is used to enhance the features with semantic information at different scales;2) Spatial Feature Enhancement Module: This module can preserve spatial detail information of images and compensate for the disadvantages of losing image spatial details due to continuous downsampling in the Ensemble Learning Model structure. Our proposed deblurring model has been extensively evaluated on several benchmark datasets, and the model achieves superior performance compared to the most advanced deblurring methods. In particular, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity index measure (SSIM) values are 33.57 dB and 0.965 on the GoPro dataset, respectively, with PSNR and SSIM improving by 0.49 dB and 0.002 over NAFNet, and 0.65 dB and 0.004 over Restormer. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.
