Efficient survivable mapping algorithm for logical topology in IP-over-WDM optical networks against node failure

The survivable mapping problem in an IP-over-WDM network with a logical graph and physical graph is the problem of finding a mapping of a logical network in a physical layer so that any failure in physical topology does not break the logical topology’s connection. Determining whether a survivable mapping against failure exists is an NP-complete problem, and therefore many heuristic algorithms have been proposed in the literature. In this paper, a heuristic mapping design strategy is proposed to enable the lightpaths to more efficiently endure a node failure. We individually consider the logical topology by building a Hamiltonian cycle and then deal with the mapping problem for disjoint physical paths. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can provide efficient survivable mapping in IP-over-WDM networks. The simulation shows that the survivability of previous methods (SNF and SMART-Node) is around 60–80%, but our proposed algorithm can build survivable mapping in all kinds of situations. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

The digital revolution has reshaped the global economy, especially e-commerce. Innovative technologies such as big data analytics, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing drive this transformation, enabling companies to make informed business decisions and influence consumers’ online purchasing behaviour. This study explores empirical evidence for the benefits of using big data analytics (BDA) to influence consumers’ online purchasing decisions in e-commerce. Primary data was collected via an online survey targeting 300 customers with online shopping experience on platforms that have adopted the digital technologies of BDA. Statistical methods used in this study included questionnaire design, reliability test, descriptive analysis, and multiple regression modelling and diagnostics. The findings indicate that the benefits of implementing BDA in e-commerce for information search, recommendation systems, consumer services, dynamic pricing, security and fraud detection are strongly associated with consumers’ online purchasing intentions. The study underscores the importance of businesses leveraging BDA, as the benefits significantly and positively impact consumers’ purchasing intentions in e-commerce while addressing security and fraud detection concerns that undermine its advantage. Nevertheless, we encourage all companies to leverage BDA implementation in their digital marketplace, which ultimately contributes to achieving e-commerce goals, such as increased market reach, cost reduction, and revenue growth. ©2024 IEEE.

ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot, offers coherent and useful replies based on analysis of large volumes of data. In this article, leading academics, scientists, distinguish researchers and engineers discuss the transformative effects of ChatGPT on modern education. This research discusses ChatGPT capabilities and its use in the education sector, identifies potential concerns and challenges. Our preliminary evaluation shows that ChatGPT perform differently in different subject areas including finance, coding, maths, and general public queries. While ChatGPT has the ability to help educators by creating instructional content, offering suggestions and acting as an online educator to learners by answering questions, transforming education through smartphones and IoT gadgets, and promoting group work, there are clear drawbacks in its use, such as the possibility of producing inaccurate or false data and circumventing duplicate content (plagiarism) detectors where originality is essential. The often reported "hallucinations" within GenerativeAI in general, and also relevant for ChatGPT, can render its use of limited benefit where accuracy is essential. What ChatGPT lacks is a stochastic measure to help provide sincere and sensitive communication with its users. Academic regulations and evaluation practices used in educational institutions need to be updated, should ChatGPT be used as a tool in education. To address the transformative effects of ChatGPT on the learning environment, educating teachers and students alike about its capabilities and limitations will be crucial. © 2023 The Authors

Facial expression recognition is an area of growing interest in computer vision research. Achieving a balance between learning subtle facial features and reducing memory consumption presents a persistent challenge, resulting in hardly to deploy model on portable mobile devices restricted by hardware resources. To overcome this issue, we propose a spatial attention module on lightweight backbone, named the cross-direction attention network (CDAN). The proposed model achieves enhanced fine-grained feature learning and used less memory consumption through cross-learning in both vertical and horizontal directions without complicated artificial feature technology. This study proposes a novel spatial attention model, which contributes an innovative approach for future research in this field. Based on the experimental outcomes, it can be concluded that the proposed model achieves state-of-the-art performance on the AffectNet dataset.

Virtual Reality (VR) stands out as a rapidly evolving wearable technology. However, findings from previous studies reveal that existing VR models exhibit a significant deficiency in addressing the visual interaction requirements of the hearing-impaired (HI) population. While some studies focus on developing VR for HI individuals and incorporating assistive technology (AT) concepts, however, the integration of AT, empathic design (ED), and visual interaction (VI) principles remain underexplored. This study addresses the gap by proposing a fusion VR model that prioritizes the needs of HI individuals. The challenges faced by the HI, such as difficulties in visually utilizing sign language, gestures, body language, and lip sync, underscore the importance of adopting AT, ED, and VI design principles. Through a rapid review approach, this paper strengthens the research foundation and outlines a conceptual framework for the development of a fusion VR model. This study aligns with the 12th Malaysian Plan's Pillar 5, emphasizing the empowerment of specific target groups, and supports SDG 10 by promoting social equality for the HI. The proposed fusion VR model aims to enhance existing designs by integrating AT, ED, and VI principles, providing a valuable reference for researchers in the field.

DebIE: A platform for implicit and explicit debiasing of word embedding spaces

Recent research efforts in NLP have demonstrated that distributional word vector spaces often encode stereotypical human biases, such as racism and sexism. With word representations ubiquitously used in NLP models and pipelines, this raises ethical issues and jeopardizes the fairness of language technologies. While there exists a large body of work on bias measures and debiasing methods, to date, there is no platform that would unify these research efforts and make bias measuring and debiasing of representation spaces widely accessible. In this work, we present DEBIE, the first integrated platform for (1) measuring and (2) mitigating bias in word embeddings. Given an (i) embedding space (users can choose between the predefined spaces or upload their own) and (ii) a bias specification (users can choose between existing bias specifications or create their own), DEBIE can (1) compute several measures of implicit and explicit bias and modify the embedding space by executing two (mutually composable) debiasing models. Quantum Self-Attention Neural Network (QSANN) has demonstrated remarkable potential. However, it is limited to measuring only partial information from qubits, thereby restricting its information extraction capability. Moreover, the measurement process requires multiple measurements for each qubit, leading to inefficiency in utilizing the feature space. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a novel approach called Positive Operator-Valued Measure based Quantum Self-Attention Neural Network (POVM-QSANN). It leverages POVM operators as observables, enabling the extraction of comprehensive QKV (Query-Key-Value) feature vectors from each qubit. This innovative mechanism significantly enhances information extraction capability and efficiently utilizes the feature space. The experimental results underscore the considerable advancements of POVM-QSANN on MC and RP datasets. Particularly noteworthy is its remarkable accuracy increase of 9.68% compared to QSANN on the RP dataset.

In this article, we introduce two new approaches for solving variational inequalities without monotonicity. The first algorithm simplifies the projection region of each iteration in Ye and He [Comput. Optim. Appl., 60 (2015), 141-150], that is, it becomes the intersection of multiple half-spaces and no longer needs to be intersected with the feasible set. By a selection technique, the second algorithm replaces the projection on the common region of the feasible set and multiple half-spaces with a specific half-spaces in each iteration. The strong convergence of these two algorithms have been demonstrated under the assumption that the Minty variational inequality has a solution. Finally, some numerical examples are given to illustrate the advantages of the proposed algorithms. © 2023, Politechnica University of Bucharest. All rights reserved.

Let TX be the full transformation monoid over a finite set X, and fix some a ∈ TX of rank r. The variant TXa has underlying set TX, and operation f ★ g = fag. We study the congruences of the subsemigroup P = Reg(TXa) consisting of all regular elements of TXa, and the lattice Cong(P) of all such congruences. Our main structure theorem ultimately decomposes Cong(P) as a specific subdirect product of Cong(Tr), and the full equivalence relation lattices of certain combinatorial systems of subsets and partitions. We use this to give an explicit classification of the congruences themselves, and we also give a formula for the height of the lattice. © 2024, CC BY.
