Orthodontic craniometric landmarks provide critical information in oral and maxillofacial imaging diagnosis and treatment planning. The Dent-landmark, defined as the odontoid process of the epistropheus, is one of the key landmarks to construct the midsagittal reference plane. In this paper, we propose a learning-based approach to automatically detect the Dent-landmark in the 3D cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) dental data. Specifically, a detector is learned using the random forest with sampled context features. Furthermore, we use spacial prior to build a constrained search space other than use the full three dimensional space. The proposed method has been evaluated on a dataset containing 73 CBCT dental volumes and yields promising results.

Energy consumption is becoming a growing concern in data centers. Many energy-conservation techniques have been proposed to address this problem. However, an integrated method is still needed to evaluate energy efficiency of storage systems and various power conservation techniques. Extensive measurements of different workloads on storage systems are often very time-consuming and require expensive equipments. We have analyzed changing characteristics such as power and performance of stand-alone disks and RAID arrays, and then defined MIND as a black box power model for RAID arrays. MIND is devised to quantitatively measure the power consumption of redundant disk arrays running different workloads in a variety of execution modes. In MIND, we define five modes (idle, standby, and several types of access) and four actions, to precisely characterize power states and changes of RAID arrays. In addition, we develop corresponding metrics for each mode and action, and then integrate the model and a measurement algorithm into a popular trace tool - blktrace. With these features, we are able to run different IO traces on large-scale storage systems with power conservation techniques. Accurate energy consumption and performance statistics are then collected to evaluate energy efficiency of storage system designs and power conservation techniques. Our experiments running both synthetic and real-world workloads on enterprise RAID arrays show that MIND can estimate power consumptions of disk arrays with an error rate less than 2%.

An aggregate signature scheme allows a public algorithm to aggregate n signatures of n distinct messages from n signers into a single signature. By validating the single resulting signature, one can be convinced that the messages have been endorsed by all the signers. Certificateless aggregate signatures allow the signers to authenticate messages without suffering from the complex certificate management in the traditional public key cryptography or the key escrow problem in identity-based cryptography. In this paper, we present a new efficient certificate less aggregate signature scheme. Compared with up-to-date certificate less aggregate signatures, our scheme is equipped with a number of attracting features: (1) it is shown to be secure under the standard computational Diffie-Hellman assumption in the random oracle model, (2) the security is proven in the strongest security model so far, (3) the signers do not need to be synchronized, and (4) its performance is comparable to the most efficient up-to-date schemes. These features are desirable in a mobile networking and computing environment where the storage/computation capacity of the end devices are limited, and due to the wireless connection and distributed feature, the computing devices are easy to be attacked and hard to be synchronized.

Wireless sensor networks generate volumes of scientific observations. However, gathered data is typically not published for use by other scientists. This paper analyses the reasons that so little sensor network data is published online in a usable form, and identifies gaps in currently available publication systems. To address these gaps we present WebSense, a lightweight and configurable web-based tool for sensor network researchers to publish their collected data. The design goals and implementation of WebSense are described and the system is evaluated against the goals. WebSense is available from http://***/.

Wireless sensor networks for environmental monitoring and agricultural applications often face long-range requirements at low bit-rates together with large numbers of nodes. Most existing wireless sensor networks use nodes with a short-range radio and use software protocols to schedule the nodes and co-ordinate multi-hop routing in order to minimise power usage. Nodes have a relatively small radio range up to a few hundred meters that is also affected by the crop growth stage and vegetation density [2]. Disadvantages of this approach include the complexity of software protocols required to co-ordinate the nodes' behaviour and the unreliable nature of the short range radio links that requires sophisticated fault tolerance mechanisms. An alternative design solution is to use low frequency, long-range radios to build a single-hop network of a base station with satellite sensing nodes [4]. This approach has the benefits of much simpler software protocols, and that transmissions in the 40 MHz band are expected to be more reliable in outdoor settings than short range transmission in the 433 MHz or 915 MHz band used by most existing sensor network radios.

The survey on software engineering excellence (SEE) was designed and conducted in 2005, 2006 and 2007 with Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan. In the survey the software engineering capability was measured from the seven viewpoints, i.e., deliverables, project management, quality assurance, process improvement, research and development, human development, and customer contacts. For the panel analysis, based on the SEE surveys we integrated 233 valid responses for the three years into a new database and identified 151 unique IT firms. In this paper we focus on the 76 independent vendors and investigate the relationships among the factors of SEE for the three years. And we conducted panel analysis of the seven factors of SEE for the three years to clarify how the previous factors of SEE influence the following factors of SEE in a year, year by year, and mid-term. Based on the result of panel analysis, first, most of factors of SEE in the previous year had significant positive influence on the same factors of SEE in the following year. Second, in a year there are some missing paths in the downstream toward deliverables as the terminal factor from research and development, contact with customers, and process improvement. Third, some factors of SEE in the previous year had significant positive influence on the different factors of SEE in the following year. Fourth, however, there were some negative paths, which implied that the effort on the factor did not pay off in the short term. © 2010 IEEE.

Ubiquitous knowledge discovery systems must be captured from many different perspectives. In earlier chapters, aspects like machine learning, underlying network technologies etc. were described. An essential component, which we shall discuss now, is still missing: Ubiquitous data. While data themselves are a central part of the knowledge discovery process, in a ubiquitous setting new challenges arise. In this context, the emergence of data itself plays a large role, therefore we label this part of KDubiq systems ubiquitous data. It clarifies the KDubiq challenges related to the multitude of available data and what we must do before we can tap into this rich information source. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Solid-state disks (SSDs) with high I/O performance are increasingly becoming popular. To extend the life time of flash memory, one can apply wear-leveling strategies to manage data blocks. However, wear-leveling strategies certainly inevitably degrade write performance. In addition to low write performance, wear-leveling strategies make one block unwritable when one bit of this block is invalid. Although data reconstruction techniques have been widely employed in disk arrays, the reconstruction techniques has not been studied in the context of solid-state disks. In this paper, we present a new fine-grained data-reconstruction algorithm for solid-state disks. The algorithm aims to provide a simple yet efficient wear-leveling strategy that improves both I/O performance and reliability of solid-state disks. Simulation experiments show that all data blocks have very similar in terms of erasure times. The number of extra erasures incurred by our algorithm is very marginal.

Improving energy efficiency of mass storage systems has become an important and pressing research issue in large HPC centers and data centers. New energy conservation techniques in storage systems constantly spring up; however, there is a lack of systematic and uniform way of accurately evaluating energy-efficient storage systems and objectively comparing a wide range of energy-saving techniques. This research presents a new integrated scheme, called TRACER, for evaluating energy-efficiency of mass storage systems and judging energy-saving techniques. The TRACER scheme consists of a toolkit used to measure energy efficiency of storage systems as well as performance and energy metrics. In addition, TRACER contains a novel and accurate workload-control module to acquire power varying with workload modes and I/O load intensity. The workload generator in TRACER facilitates a block-level trace replay mechanism. The main goal of the workload-control module is to select a certain percentage (e.g., anywhere from 10% to 100%) of trace entries from a real-world I/O trace file uniformly and to replay filtered trace entries to reach any level of I/O load intensity. TRACER is experimentally validated on a general RAID5 enterprise disk array. Our experiments demonstrate that energy-efficient mass storage systems can be accurately evaluated on full scales by TRACER. We applied TRACER to investigate impacts of workload modes and load intensity on energy-efficiency of storage devices. This work shows that TRACER can enable storage system developers to evaluate energy efficiency designs for storage systems.
