Detecting the symptoms of COVID-19 during pandemic environment using smart spectacle thermal images and deep capsule networks

The pandemic creates a more complicated providence of medical assistance and diagnosis procedures. In the world, Covid-19, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS Cov-2), and plague are widely known pandemic disease desperations. Due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic tragedies, various medical diagnosis models and intelligent computing solutions are proposed for medical applications. In this era of computer-based medical environment, conventional clinical solutions are surpassed by many Machine Learning and Deep Learning-based COVID-19 diagnosis models. Anyhow, many existing models are developing lab-based diagnosis environments. Notably, the Gated Recurrent Unit-based Respiratory data Analysis (GRU-RE), Intelligent Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-based Covid data Analysis (Thermal Images) (I-UVAC), and Convolutional Neural Network-based computer Tomography Image Analysis (CNN-CT) are enriched with lightweight image data analysis techniques for obtaining mass pandemic data at real-time conditions. However, the existing models directly deal with bulk images (thermal data and respiratory data) to diagnose the symptoms of COVID-19. Against these works, the proposed spectacle thermal image data analysis model creates an easy and effective way of disease diagnosis deployment strategies. Particularly, the mass detection of disease symptoms needs a more lightweight equipment setup. In this proposed model, each patient's thermal data is collected via the spectacles of medical staff, and the data are analyzed with the help of a complex set of capsule network functions. Comparatively, the conventional capsule network functions are enriched in this proposed model using adequate sampling and data reduction solutions. In this way, the proposed model works effectively for mass thermal data diagnosis applications. A Credible and Fair Federated Learning Framework Based on Blockchain

Federated learning (FL) enables cooperative computation between multiple participants while protecting user privacy. Currently, FL algorithms assume that all participants are trustworthy and their systems are secure. However, the following problems arise in real-world scenarios: 1) Malicious clients disrupt FL through model poisoning and data poisoning attacks. Although some research has proposed secure aggregation methods to solve this problem, most methods have limitations. 2) The current method cannot fairly evaluate client contribution in some scenarios. Some clients exhibit free-rider behavior, seeking to cheat the reward system and manipulate global models. Evaluating client contribution and distributing rewards also present challenges. To address these challenges, we design a trustworthy federated framework to ensure secure computing throughout the federated task process. First, we propose a method of detecting malicious models to guarantee secure model aggregation. Then, we propose a fair method of assessing contribution to identify client-side free-riding behavior. Finally, we implement a computation process based on blockchain and smart contracts to guarantee the trustworthiness and fairness of federated tasks. To validate the performance of our framework, we simulate different types of client attacks and contribution evaluation scenarios on several open-source datasets. The experiments show that our framework ensures the credibility of federated tasks and achieves a fair evaluation of client contributions. © 2020 IEEE.

With the development of cloud computing and the digital transformation of the medical industry, the application scenarios and effects of smart healthcare are constantly expanding and improving. Smart healthcare plays an important role in improving service quality and medical efficiency and reducing medical costs. However, in the process of data collection, storage, and transmission, the risk of patients' privacy being illegally accessed or leaked has become increasingly prominent. These medical data contain sensitive information about patients, and once leaked, it will violate the privacy of patients, cause medical accidents, and seriously damage the legitimate rights and interests of patients. An efficient and reliable privacy protection mechanism is the foundation and key to establishing a harmonious doctor-patient relationship and improving medical quality. Although traditional encryption methods can provide certain information security protection, they cannot balance data protection and data analysis and processing and are not suitable for intelligent medical environments that require more precise medical decisions. Therefore, we propose a hierarchical identity-based inner product functional encryption scheme with a malicious user revocation mechanism aimed at addressing the privacy and security issues of patients in smart healthcare. This solution allows specific access and analysis of data while ensuring that patients' sensitive information is protected from infringement, enabling doctors to diagnose and treat more accurately and optimize the allocation of medical resources to the greatest extent possible. Furthermore, we have formally demonstrated the security of the scheme and conducted a security analysis and performance comparison. The results show that our solution has better performance while ensuring security and is suitable for the efficient and secure data processing requirements of smart healthcare. © 2014 IEEE.

Anomaly detection in sequential signals is gaining prominence, especially with limited training data and timeliness requirements. Fully extracting the data-inside changing information, we propose a novel Wavelet-Enhanced Reservoir Computing framework (WE-Res). Our framework uses Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) to decompose signals for multi-level detail and trend extraction recursively. Each level is fitted using an Echo State Network (ESN) respectively, extracting its inside dynamic features into fitted models. Integrating these dynamic features creates a "multi-level dynamic feature" that enhances signal representation, aiding in distinguishing between normal and anomalous patterns. We further introduce a dual-objective optimization to refine ESNs' reservoirs, increasing the fitting accuracy and improving category discrimination among the captured features. Validation on real-world data confirms our method's effectiveness, especially in data-limited scenarios and less training time compared to recent baselines. © 2025 IEEE.

A data representation method using distance correlation

Association in-between features has been demonstrated to improve the representation ability of data. However, the original association data reconstruction method may face two issues: the dimension of reconstructed data is undoubtedly higher than that of original data, and adopted association measure method does not well balance effectiveness and efficiency. To address above two issues, this paper proposes a novel association-based representation improvement method, named as AssoRep. AssoRep first obtains the association between features via distance correlation method that has some advantages than Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Then an improved matrix is formed via stacking the association value of any two features. Next, an improved feature representation is obtained by aggregating the original feature with the enhancement matrix. Finally, the improved feature representation is mapped to a low-dimensional space via principal component analysis. The effectiveness of AssoRep is validated on 120 datasets and the fruits further prefect our previous work on the association data reconstruction.

NeuroProbe: A Performance Profiling Feed Forward Neural Network Simulator for Hardware Interaction Analysis

NeuroProbe is a simple neural network simulator designed by authors specifically for educational purposes focusing on simulating inference phase on a computationally capable embedded hardware, aiming to provide a deeper understanding of hardware interactions and performance improvement. This simulator incorporates performance profiling capabilities, allowing students and educators to analyze and optimize the performance of a simulated trained neural network. By simulating the intricate hardware interactions, NeuroProbe enables users to gain insights into how various components impact the overall performance of neural networks. Using this simulator, learners can experiment with different configurations and architectures, identify potential bottlenecks, and explore optimization strategies to enhance neural network performance before deploying the model on an Edge Computing environment. It also enriches computer science education by enabling learners to gain deeper insights into hardware interactions and performance improvement. By identifying performance bottlenecks, learners can refine their understanding of neural networks and develop skills in optimizing their models for enhanced performance. In conclusion, NeuroProbe empowers users to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation of neural network on an embedded device, fostering a more comprehensive understanding of neural networks and their hardware requirements. Currently, it is focused solely on single-threaded CPU-based computation enabling SSE, AVX. Pruning is a major research field in neural networks, enhancing their efficiency and generalization. The field of pruning approaches in genetic programming (GP) is continually evolving, with researchers actively exploring new techniques and approaches to optimise the performance of GP models. This research introduces a novel pruning algorithm for Genetic Programming-based Symbolic Regression (GPSR). The proposed method employs a weighting mechanism to identify and filter out unimportant subtrees in each generation. To achieve this, the method arranges all subtrees linearly and assigns weights to each subtree and terminal. It then uses Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) to optimize these weights, enabling the identification of unimportant subtrees and terminals for effective pruning. The algorithm’s effectiveness was evaluated using ten regression datasets, including high-dimensional and complex feature sets. Furthermore, comparisons were made with two other algorithms to evaluate its performance. The results indicate that the proposed approach not only achieves better learning and generalisation performance but also generates smaller trees compared to standard GP, thereby improving interpretability. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The automated design of analog circuits presents a significant challenge due to the complexity of circuit topology and parameter selection. Traditional evolutionary algorithms, such as Genetic Programming (GP), have shown potential in this domain but are often hindered by inefficient search processes and the large design space. Furthermore, fitness evaluation in the evolutionary design of circuits is often computationally very expensive. In this paper, we introduce a novel evolutionary framework that leverages approximate Shapley values to guide the optimization process in tree-based genetic programming for analog circuit design. Our approach addresses the computational challenges associated with computing Shapley values by introducing a two-stage evolutionary framework that includes a Shapley Value Library (SVlib) and a KNN-based prediction for efficient estimation of Shapley values. Our proposed work not only enhances the search efficiency by focusing on the most beneficial sub-circuits but also leads to more compact and efficient circuit designs. Furthermore, fitness evaluation in the evolutionary design of circuits is often computationally very expensive experiments, we verify that our framework accelerates evolutionary convergence and outperforms traditional methods in terms of circuit optimization. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Cross-Modal Knowledge Diffusion-Based Generation for Difference-Aware Medical VQA

Multimodal medical applications have garnered considerable attention due to their potential to offer comprehensive and robust support for medical assistance. Specifically, within this domain, difference-aware medical Visual Question Answering (VQA) has emerged as a topic of increasing interest that enables the recognition of changes in physical conditions over time when compared to previous states and provides customized suggestions accordingly. However, it is challenging because samples usually exhibit characteristics of complexity, diversity, and inherent noise. Besides, there is a need for multimodal knowledge understanding of the medical domain. The difference-aware setting requiring image comparison further intensifies these situations. To this end, we propose a cross-Modal knowlEdge diffusioN-baseD gEneration netwoRk (MENDER), where the diffusion mechanism with multi-step denoising and knowledge injection from global to local level are employed to tackle the aforementioned challenges, respectively. The diffusion process is to gradually generate answers with the sequence input of questions, random noises for the answer masks and virtual vision prompts of images. The strategy of answer nosing and knowledge cascading is specifically tailored for this task and is implemented during forward and reverse diffusion processes. Moreover, the visual and structure knowledge injection are proposed to learn virtual vision prompts to guide the diffusion process, where the former is realized using a pre-trained medical image-text network and the latter is modeled with spatial and semantic graph structures processed by the heterogeneous graph Transformer models. Experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness of MENDER for difference-aware medical VQA. Furthermore, it also exhibits notable performance in the low-resource setting and conventional medical VQA tasks. © 1992-2012 IEEE.

Multi-scale feature fusion for facial expression recognition

As an important computer vision task that can be used in many areas, facial expression recognition (FER) has been widely studied which much progress has been obtained especially when deep learning (DL) approaches have been introduced in FER. However, existing methods are restricted to extracting localized information or utilizing attention mechanism to focus on the region most relevant to the emotion, possibly resulting in errors in facial expression interpretation. Moreover, the inconsistency of image sizes in the wild FER datasets further increases the difficulty of the FER task. To address these issues, we propose a multi-scale feature fusion (MSFF) for FER. Specifically, our method first extracts features from facial images using multi-scale feature extraction to obtain rich multi-dimensional information. Meanwhile, extensive feature extraction at different scales is achieved by expanding the receptive field of the model, which provides the basis for more detailed analysis of facial expressions. Eventually, features at different scales are fused to enhance their synergistic effect. Subsequently, the adaptive extraction of comprehensive and valuable information from the fused features is performed, optimizing the performance of expression recognition. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on in-the-wild datasets.
