Large scale artificial intelligence (AI) models possess excellent capabilities in semantic representation and understanding, making them particularly well-suited for semantic encoding and decoding. However, the substantial scale of these AI models imposes unacceptable computational resources and communication delays. To address this issue, we propose a semantic communication scheme based on robust knowledge distillation (RKD-SC) for large scale model enabled semantic communications. In the considered system, a transmitter extracts the features of the source image for robust transmission and accurate image classification at the receiver. To effectively utilize the superior capability of large scale model while make the cost affordable, we first transfer knowledge from a large scale model to a smaller scale model to serve as the semantic encoder. Then, to enhance the robustness of the system against channel noise, we propose a channel-aware autoencoder (CAA) based on the Transformer architecture. Experimental results show that the encoder of proposed RKD-SC system can achieve over 93.3% of the performance of a large scale model while compressing 96.67% number of parameters. Toward Democratized Generative AI in Next-Generation Mobile Edge Networks

The rapid development of generative AI technologies, including large language models (LLMs), has brought transformative changes to various fields. However, deploying such advanced models on mobile and edge devices remains challenging due to their high computational, memory, communication, and energy requirements. To address these challenges, we propose a model-centric framework for democratizing generative AI deployment on mobile and edge networks. First, we comprehensively review key compact model strategies, such as quantization, model pruning, and knowledge distillation, and present key performance metrics to optimize generative AI for mobile deployment. Next, we provide a focused review of mobile and edge networks, emphasizing the specific challenges and requirements of these environments. We further conduct a case study demonstrating the effectiveness of these strategies by deploying LLMs on real mobile edge devices. Experimental results highlight the practicality of democratized LLMs, with significant improvements in generalization accuracy, hallucination rate, accessibility, and resource consumption. Finally, we discuss potential research directions to further advance the deployment of generative AI in resource-constrained environments. © 2024, CC BY.

Provenance-Based Endpoint Detection and Response (P-EDR) systems are deemed crucial for future APT defenses. Despite the fact that numerous new techniques to improve P-EDR systems have been proposed in academia, it is still unclear whether the industry will adopt P-EDR systems and what improvements the industry desires for P-EDR systems. To this end, we conduct the first set of systematic studies on the effectiveness and the limitations of P-EDR systems. Our study consists of four components: a one-to-one interview, an online questionnaire study, a survey of the relevant literature, and a systematic measurement study. Our research indicates that all industry experts consider P-EDR systems to be more effective than conventional Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) systems. However, industry experts are concerned about the operating cost of P-EDR systems. In addition, our research reveals three significant gaps between academia and industry: (1) overlooking client-side overhead;(2) imbalanced alarm triage cost and interpretation cost;and (3) excessive server-side memory consumption. This paper's findings provide objective data on the effectiveness of P-EDR systems and how much improvements are needed to adopt P-EDR systems in industry. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Swarm-Net: Firmware Attestation in IoT Swarms using Graph Neural Networks and Volatile Memory

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of billions of interconnected, primarily low-end embedded devices. Despite large-scale deployment, studies have highlighted critical security concerns in IoT networks, many of which stem from firmware-related issues. Furthermore, IoT swarms have become more prevalent in industries, smart homes, and agricultural applications, among others. Malicious activity on one node in a swarm can propagate to larger network sections. Although several Remote Attestation (RA) techniques have been proposed, they are limited by their latency, availability, complexity, hardware assumptions, and uncertain access to firmware copies under Intellectual Property (IP) rights. We present Swarm-Net, a novel swarm attestation technique that exploits the inherent, interconnected, graph-like structure of IoT networks along with the runtime information stored in the Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) using Graph Neural Networks (GNN) to detect malicious firmware and its downstream effects. We also present the first datasets on SRAM-based swarm attestation encompassing different types of firmware and edge relationships. In addition, a secure swarm attestation protocol is presented. Swarm-Net is not only computationally lightweight but also does not require a copy of the firmware. It achieves a 99.96% attestation rate on authentic firmware, 100% detection rate on anomalous firmware, and 99% detection rate on propagated anomalies, at a communication overhead and inference latency of ∼ 1 second and ∼ 10−5 seconds (on a laptop CPU), respectively. In addition to the collected datasets, Swarm-Net's effectiveness is evaluated on simulated trace replay, random trace perturbation, and dropped attestation responses, showing robustness against such threats. The non-functional requirements of the software system usually cross the whole system, and the object-oriented software development method can lead to the entanglement and dispersion of the code. ASECT-Z proposed a formal method for non-functional requirements, it is the formal specification for the extension of Z language. The language based on set theory and mathematical logic, with strict logic, and the formal specification of reasoning. Spatial pooling (SP) and cross-channel pooling (CCP) operators have been applied to aggregate spatial features and pixel-wise features from feature maps in deep neural networks (DNNs), respectively. Their main goal is to reduce computation and memory overhead without visibly weakening the performance of DNNs. However, SP often faces the problem of losing the subtle feature representations, while CCP has a high possibility of ignoring salient feature representations, which may lead to both miscalibration of confidence issues and suboptimal medical classification results. To address these problems, we propose a novel dual-view framework, the first to systematically investigate the relative roles of SP and CCP by analyzing the difference between spatial features and pixel-wise features. Based on this framework, we propose a new pooling method, termed dual-view pyramid pooling (DVPP), to aggregate multi-scale dual-view features. DVPP aims to boost both medical image classification and confidence calibration performance by fully leveraging the merits of SP and CCP operators from a dual-axis perspective. Additionally, we discuss how to fulfill DVPP with five parameter-free implementations. Extensive experiments on six 2D/3D medical image classification tasks show that our DVPP surpasses state-of-the-art pooling methods in terms of medical image classification results and confidence calibration across different DNNs. © 2024, CC BY.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted communication systems have been extensively studied for providing high-precision location services. However, most studies have overlooked the impact of carrier frequency offset (CFO) and phase noise (PN) resulting from hardware impairments on localization. This paper presents a novel, alternating optimization (AO)-based algorithm to jointly estimate the CFO, PN, and user position, where, provided the user position, closed-form expressions for the CFO and PN are derived per iteration, significantly reducing the complexity and enhancing the stability of the algorithm. Another important aspect is a new RIS phase shift optimization algorithm developed to minimize the analytical lower bound of localization accuracy, hence benefiting localization. The semidefinite relaxation method and Schur complement are utilized to convexify this challenging non-convex optimization problem to a semidefinite program. Simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms, with the localization accuracy enhanced by two orders of magnitude. The localization accuracy of the proposed algorithm is close to the analytical lower bound, with a root mean square error of lower than 10−2 m. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Has My Release Disobeyed Semantic Versioning? Static Detection Based on Semantic Differencing

To enhance the compatibility in the version control of Java Thirdparty Libraries (TPLs), Maven adopts Semantic Versioning (SemVer) to standardize the underlying meaning of versions, but users could still confront abnormal execution and crash after upgrades even if compilation and linkage succeed. It is caused by semantic breaking (SemB) issues, such that APIs directly used by users have identical signatures but inconsistent semantics across upgrades. To strengthen compliance with SemVer rules, developers and users should be alerted of such issues. Unfortunately, it is challenging to detect them statically, because semantic changes in the internal methods of APIs are difficult to capture. Dynamic testing can confirmingly uncover some, but it is limited by inadequate coverage. To detect SemB issues over compatible upgrades (Patch and Minor) by SemVer rules, we conduct an empirical study on 180 SemB issues to understand the root causes, inspired by which, we propose Sembid (Semantic Breaking Issue Detector) to statically detect such issues of TPLs for developers and users. Since APIs are directly used by users, Sembid detects and reports SemB issues based on APIs. For a pair of APIs, Sembid walks through the call chains originating from the API to locate breaking changes by measuring semantic diff. Then, Sembid checks if the breaking changes can affect API's output along call chains. The evaluation showed Sembid achieved 90.26% recall and 81.29% precision and outperformed other API checkers on SemB API detection. We also revealed Sembid detected over 3 times more SemB APIs with better coverage than unit tests, the commonly used solution. Furthermore, we carried out an empirical study on 1, 629, 589 APIs from 546 version pairs of top Java libraries and found there were 2∼4 times more SemB APIs than those with signature-based issues. Recently, an accurate prediction of stock market returns is a very challenging task due to volatile and non-linear nature of the financial stock markets. The advent of artificial intelligence and enhanced processing power has led to the realisation that preprogrammed techniques are more effective at forecasting stock values. The stock market is currently one of the most researched and fastest developing subj ects, and predicting its behaviour is crucial. The primary challenge in this area of research remains improving forecast precision. Strong shareholder returns are made possible by stock price forecasting. Despite this, researchers use these algorithms to predict continuing market trends based on Stock Technical Indicators (STIs), due to recent advancements in machine learning techniques. This study analyses Yahoo Finance data from STIs over a decade to predict stock prices using a Bi- directional Recurrent Neural Network (BI-RNN). Initially, the analysed STIs were used as input for an autoencoder during the dimensionality reduction procedure, which reduced the correlation between the STIs. These STIs and the Yahoo Finance data were then provided to BI-RNN. Next, in order to forecast stock prices, the BI-RNN's outcome attributes were fed into the soft max layer. From the results, it clearly shows that proposed Bi-RNN shown better results in terms of a minimal MAPE value of 0.41, MAE of 4.42, RMSE of 0.10, and MSE of 212.25 in the experiments, the proposed strategy surpassed traditional methods.

Implicit neural representations (INRs) have gained prominence as a powerful paradigm in scene reconstruction and computer graphics, demonstrating remarkable results. By utilizing neural networks to parameterize data through implicit continuous functions, INRs offer several benefits. Recognizing the potential of INRs beyond these domains, this survey aims to provide a comprehensive overview of INR models in the field of medical imaging. In medical settings, numerous challenging and ill-posed problems exist, making INRs an attractive solution. The survey explores the application of INRs in various medical imaging tasks, such as image reconstruction, segmentation, registration, novel view synthesis, and compression. It discusses the advantages and limitations of INRs, highlighting their resolution-agnostic nature, memory efficiency, ability to avoid locality biases, and differentiability, enabling adaptation to different tasks. Furthermore, the survey addresses the challenges and considerations specific to medical imaging data, such as data availability, computational complexity, and dynamic clinical scene analysis. It also identifies future research directions and opportunities, including integration with multimodal imaging, real-time and interactive systems, and domain adaptation for clinical decision support. To facilitate further exploration and implementation of INRs in medical image analysis, we have provided a compilation of cited studies along with their available open-source implementations on GitHub.
