Proteins play a crucial role in living organisms, and understanding protein-protein interactions is vital for comprehending their functions and aiding drug discovery. In recent years, advanced deep learning models have been developed to predict protein-protein interactions from sequences. However, these large-scale approaches often suffer from deficiencies, resulting in both false positive and false negative predictions. Traditional encoding methods struggle to effectively represent the semantic meaning of individual residues in protein sequences and their impact on neighbouring residues. To overcome these deficiencies, we propose a novel method named R2V-PPI (Residue-to-Vector embeddings based Protein-Protein Interaction Framework) that effectively represents protein sequences and predicts protein-protein interactions. Inspired by Word2Vec, R2V-PPI learns informative representations of individual amino acid residues, capturing the context and relationships between them in raw protein sequences. These representations provide valuable input features for a downstream deep learning model. Our methodology offers a robust and versatile approach for predicting protein-protein interactions, especially when structural information is limited or unavailable. Evaluation on the S. cerevisiae dataset demonstrates that R2V-PPI outperforms existing state-of-the-art machine learning models. © 2024 IEEE.

3D view reconstruction in a real-time unknown environment poses several challenges to vision-based applications. Herein, this paper outlines real-time experimental results and analysis of 3D view reconstruction methods. Since real-time experimentation requires inputs from different sensors, this paper outlines the results of methods from the following categories: image based methods and point cloud based methods. This paper explains the detailed steps involved in 3D view reconstruction followed by an explanation of the methods. It provides detailed discussions, advantages, limitations, and empirical results, along with presenting differences between algorithms. For analysis of experimental results, two benchmarked datasets i.e., KITTI 3D benchmark suite and ShapeNet are considered. Furthermore, the paper explores potential future scopes, including the utilization of generative models, unsupervised learning, advanced sensors, and many more. © 2024 IEEE.

Geometric representation of query embeddings (using points, particles, rectangles and cones) can effectively achieve the task of answering complex logical queries expressed in first-order logic (FOL) form over knowledge graphs, allowing intuitive encodings. However, current geometric-based methods depend on the neural approach to model FOL operators (conjunction, disjunction and negation), which are not easily explainable with considerable computation cost. We overcome this challenge by introducing a symbolic modeling approach for the FOL operators, emphasizing the direct calculation of the intersection between geometric shapes, particularly sector-cones in the embedding space, to model the conjunction operator. This approach reduces the computation cost as a non-neural approach is involved in the core logic operators. Moreover, we propose to accelerate the learning in the relation projection operator using the neural approach to emphasize the essential role of this operator in all query structures. Although empirical evidence for explainability is challenging, our approach demonstrates a significant improvement in answering complex logical queries (both non-negative and negative FOL forms) over previous geometric-based models. © 2023 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Neural Architecture Search (NAS) aims to automate the creation of Artificial Neural Networks, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), lessening the reliance on labour-intensive manual design by human experts. A CNN architecture can be decomposed into a micro- and macro-architecture, each influenced by distinct design and optimisation strategies to con-tribute to the overall construction and performance of the CNN. Cellular Encoding (CE), an evolutionary computation technique, has been successfully used to represent diverse network topologies of varying complexities. Recently, CE has been applied to evolve CNN architectures, showing promising results. However, current CE-based NAS approaches focus on evolving either the micro-or macro-architectures without considering the evolution of both in the same algorithm. Evolving the micro- and macro-architecture together can increase the performance of evolved CNN architectures. This research introduces a novel two-stage hybrid approach, combining Genetic Algorithms (GA) and CE to evolve both the micro- and macro-architectures to synthesise CNNs for classification tasks. Candidate macro-architectures are evolved using a CE approach, while a GA approach is used to explore the micro-architecture search space. The proposed algorithm is evaluated across four commonly used datasets and compared against six NAS peer competitors and five state-of-the-art manually designed CNN architectures. The results validate the approach's high competitiveness, outperforming several peer competitors on image and text classification tasks. © 2023 IEEE.

Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems (ICPSs) are an integral component of modern manufacturing and industries. By digitizing data throughout product life cycles, Digital Twins (DTs) in ICPSs enable a shift from current industrial infrastructures to intelligent and adaptive infrastructures. Thanks to data process capability, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) can drive the construction and update of DTs to improve predictive accuracy and prepare for diverse smart manufacturing. However, mechanisms that leverage Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices to share sensing data for DT construction are susceptible to adverse selection problems. In this paper, we first develop a GenAI-driven DT architecture in ICPSs. To address the adverse selection problem caused by information asymmetry, we propose a contract theory model and develop a sustainable diffusion-based soft actor-critic algorithm to identify the optimal feasible contract. Specifically, we leverage dynamic structured pruning techniques to reduce parameter numbers of actor networks, allowing sustainability and efficient implementation of the proposed algorithm. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and the algorithm, enabling efficient DT construction and updates to monitor and manage ICPSs. © 2023 IEEE.

The diagnosis of a range of eye disorders needs to categorize the retinal vessels. computerized implementation of this process is becoming increasingly essential for automated screening systems for retinal diseases. To achieve a more accurate extraction of the retinal vessels, a new pre-processing step is proposed. These proposed pre-processes are also compared to other algorithms to assess their impact. The proposed pre-processing process consists of two phases. The first phase is the implementation and validation of the pre-processing modules, and the second phase is the implementation of these pre-processes onto the retinal vessels that were to be extracted. To achieve a significantly improved segmented vessel image, the proposed pre-process phase employs a common image-processing technique. In recent years, there has been a great deal of focus on retinal vessel identification studies, and the importance of assessing and confirming the findings of retinal vessel segmentation. © 2024 IEEE.

The maintenance and inspection of power lines is key to ensuring their normal operation and maintaining an uninterrupted power supply for various human activities. Traditional methods to detect power line assets usually detect only a small number of assets, and face the challenge of low inspection accuracy and high computational resources. This study proposes a power line asset detection algorithm designed based on the YOLOv8 to address these issues. Firstly, the C2f-DC module is added to the algorithm’s backbone network, enhancing the feature extraction capability of the network. Then, the MSCA module is incorporated into the algorithm’s neck network. This module effectively captures multi-scale contextual information, thereby enhancing the feature extraction capability of the algorithm. Finally, the DyHead module and the Inner-IoU loss function are used to replace the original detection head and the original loss function, respectively. The Dyhead module dynamically adjusts feature representations, thus boosting the detection accuracy of the algorithm. The Inner-IoU loss function addresses the issues of poor generalization and slow convergence associated, thereby improving the performance of the algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate that the power line asset detection algorithm designed based on YOLOv8 achieves a mean average precision (mAP) of 90%, accurately detecting power line asset. © 2025 SPIE.

Integrating deep learning methods into metaheuristic algorithms has gained attention for addressing design-related issues and enhancing performance. The primary objective is to improve solution quality and convergence speed within solution search spaces. This study investigates the use of deep learning methods as a generative model to learn historical content, including global best and worst solutions, solution sequences, function evaluation patterns, solution space characteristics, population modification trajectories, and movement between local and global search processes. An LSTM-based architecture is trained on dynamic optimization data collected during the metaheuristic optimization process. The trained model generates an initial solution space and is integrated into the optimization algorithms to intelligently monitor the search process during exploration and exploitation phases. The proposed deep learning-based methods are evaluated on 55 benchmark functions of varying complexities, including CEC 2017 and compared with 13 biology-based, evolution-based, and swarm-based metaheuristic algorithms. Experimental results demonstrate that all the deep learning-based optimization algorithms achieve high-quality solutions, faster convergence rates, and significant performance improvements. These findings highlight the critical role of deep learning in addressing design issues, enhancing solution quality, trajectory, and performance speed in metaheuristic algorithms. © The Author(s) 2025.

By recognizing students' facial expressions in a classroom, it is possible to determine in real-time whether students are confused, dissatisfied or happy. Understanding students' emotional states helps teachers adjust teaching strategies and methods, thus improving the quality and effect of teaching. However, classroom scenarios are often complex, and most previous expression recognition methods suffer from the problems of missing local features and low accuracy. Additionally, the imbalanced distribution of datasets has an impact on the recognition accuracy during model training. Therefore, in this paper, based on deep learning theory, an LCANet model, which incorporates an attention mechanism, is proposed to realize the recognition and analysis of students' expressions during classroom teaching. To optimize the global feature extraction capability of the network, the model uses ConvNeXt V2 as the backbone. Moreover, to enable the model to better focus on the important parts of facial expressions, we add an improved channel space attention (CSA) module to extract local features. In addition, we introduce the LF loss function to alleviate the class imbalance problem in the facial expression dataset. The experimental results show that our LCANet model achieves good recognition rate on the public FERPlus dataset with 91.43% accuracy. Therefore, the proposed LCANet model has good robustness and expression recognition performance. © 2023 IEEE.
