RankFIRST: Visual Analysis for Factor Investment By Ranking Stock Timeseries

In the era of quantitative investment, factor-based investing models are widely adopted in the construction of stock portfolios. These models explain the performance of individual stocks by a set of financial factors, e.g., market beta and company size. In industry, open investment platforms allow the online building of factor-based models, yet set a high bar on the engineering expertise of end-users. State-of-the-art visualization systems integrate the whole factor investing pipeline, but do not directly address domain users' core requests on ranking factors and stocks for portfolio construction. The current model lacks explainability, which downgrades its credibility with stock investors. To fill the gap in modeling, ranking, and visualizing stock time series for factor investment, we designed and implemented a visual analytics system, namely RankFIRST. The system offers built-in support for an established factor collection and a cross-sectional regression model viable for human interpretation. A hierarchical slope graph design is introduced according to the desired characteristics of good factors for stock investment. A novel firework chart is also invented extending the well-known candlestick chart for stock time series. We evaluated the system on the full-scale Chinese stock market data in the recent 30 years. Case studies and controlled user evaluation demonstrate the superiority of our system on factor investing, in comparison to both passive investing on stock indices and existing stock market visual analytics tools. The epidemic growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) objects have revolutionized Maritime Transportation Systems (MTS). Though, it becomes challenging for the centralized cloud-centric framework to fulfil the application requirements such as low latency and power utilization. The introduction of the distributed edge-centric framework has recently helped the IoT-enabled MTS to meet these requirements by manipulating the tasks at the edge of the networks. Despite the fact that MTS leverages mobile subscribers by overcoming inherent cloud computing limitations, data security and user privacy requirements in establishing the MTS setup are still non-trivial challenges. In this article, we develop a key agreement solution for mobile users to realize mutual authentication in a single round. Our protocol offers user anonymity to maintain user privacy, and it can prevent physical attacks by physically unclonable functions. Initially, the security analysis is conferred to substantiate our protocol's security persistence or strength. Later, its performance correlation is observed under the assumption of diverse metrics in a predefined empirical setup. The meticulous performance correlation endorses the precedence of our protocol over specified related protocols. © 2000-2011 IEEE.

Point cloud-based large scale place recognition is an important but challenging task for many applications such as Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). Taking the task as a point cloud retrieval problem, previous methods have made delightful achievements. However, how to deal with catastrophic collapse caused by rotation problems is still under-explored. In this paper, to tackle the issue, we propose a novel Point Cloud-based Rotation-aware Large Scale Place Recognition Network (RPR-Net). In particular, to solve the problem, we propose to learn rotation-invariant features in three steps. First, we design three kinds of novel Rotation-Invariant Features (RIFs), which are low-level features that can hold the rotation-invariant property. Second, using these RIFs, we design an attentive module to learn rotation-invariant kernels. Third, we apply these kernels to previous point cloud features to generate new features, which is the well-known SO(3) mapping process. By doing so, high-level scene-specific rotation-invariant features can be learned. We call the above process an Attentive Rotation-Invariant Convolution (ARIConv). To achieve the place recognition goal, we build RPR-Net, which takes ARIConv as a basic unit to construct a dense network architecture. Then, powerful global descriptors used for retrieval-based place recognition can be sufficiently extracted from RPR-Net. Experimental results on prevalent datasets show that our method achieves comparable results to existing state-of-the-art place recognition models and significantly outperforms other rotation-invariant baseline models when solving rotation problems. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Strong physical unsolvable function (PUF) has a wide range of applications in internet of things (IoT) security. However, it is vulnerable to machine learning (ML) modeling attacks. This paper proposes a strong PUF anti-ML attack method based on dynamic-matrix encryption. It obfuscates the challenge by multiplying the dynamic encryption matrix (DEM) with the challenge matrix synchronizing initial values during the registration phase of the device security authentication protocol prevents our obfuscation from being invalidated when the algorithms and structures motivating the obfuscation are made public. Each round of DEM is updated with respect to each previous round of challenge which is similar to the properties of sequential logic circuits in that the current response does not depend only on the current challenge but is related to previous challenge. Experimental results show that even if an attacker collects 1 million challenge response pairs, the prediction accuracies of the several ML attacks we use are below 53%, with negligible effects on randomness, reliability, and uniqueness. © 2024 IEEE.

In the realm of music AI, arranging rich and structured multi-track accompaniments from a simple lead sheet presents significant challenges. Such challenges include maintaining track cohesion, ensuring long-term coherence, and optimizing computational efficiency. In this paper, we introduce a novel system that leverages prior modelling over disentangled style factors to address these challenges. Our method presents a two-stage process: initially, a piano arrangement is derived from the lead sheet by retrieving piano texture styles;subsequently, a multi-track orchestration is generated by infusing orchestral function styles into the piano arrangement. Our key design is the use of vector quantization and a unique multi-stream Transformer to model the long-term flow of the orchestration style, which enables flexible, controllable, and structured music generation. Experiments show that by factorizing the arrangement task into interpretable sub-stages, our approach enhances generative capacity while improving efficiency. Additionally, our system supports a variety of music genres and provides style control at different composition hierarchies. We further show that our system achieves superior coherence, structure, and overall arrangement quality compared to existing baselines. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. A prominent use case of consumer electronics-based Internet of Things (IoT) applications, focused on smart cities, is connected devices that enable cities to optimize their operations via access to high volumes of sensitive data. Yet, these devices commonly utilize public channels for data access and sharing, requiring consistent communication protocols and an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) with the aid of AI. However, most of them involve high computation and communication costs. They are not fully reliable, either. Also, AI-based IDS solutions are viewed as black boxes because they cannot justify their decisions. To resolve these issues, we have proposed a framework based on explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) for securing consumer IoT applications in smart cities. At the beginning of the protocol execution, the participants exchange authenticated data through the blockchain-based AKA procedure. Meanwhile, we adopt the Python-based Shapley Additive Explanation (SHAP) framework to explain and interpret the core features guiding decision-making. Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) has been a major mental disease in recent years, imposing huge negative impacts on both our society and individuals. The current clinical MDD detection methods, such as self-report scales and interviews, often suffer from their subjectiveness. In contrast, electroencephalography (EEG) signals reflect brain activity and can be used as an effective information source for MDD detection. However, the learning-based MDD detection methods with EEG data usually neglect the valuable information contained in the unlabeled data, therefore possibly suffering from the label scarcity issue. In this context, we propose a simple EEG-based Joint Semi-supervised Learning (JSL) model for the MDD detection task, which fully leverages the information from unlabeled data. Specifically, by equipping the unlabeled samples with the intermediately predicted pseudo labels, the accurate position of the class-specific centroids in the feature space can be gradually refined. Based on that, the auxiliary labels based on a heuristic centroid-based classifier can be obtained, which plays an effective complementary role in predicting the sample labels. The experiments on a public dataset demonstrate the effectivenes s of our method, showing an obvious performance gain via using the proposed semi-supervised strategy. © 2023, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

There is a growing need for diverse, high-quality stuttered speech data, particularly in the context of Indian languages. This paper introduces Project Boli, a multi-lingual stuttered speech dataset designed to advance scientific understanding and technology development for individuals who stutter, particularly in India. The dataset constitutes (a) anonymized metadata (gender, age, country, mother tongue) and responses to a questionnaire about how stuttering affects their daily lives, (b) captures both read speech (using the Rainbow Passage) and spontaneous speech (through image description tasks) for each participant and (c) includes detailed annotations of five stutter types: blocks, prolongations, interjections, sound repetitions and word repetitions. We present a comprehensive analysis of the dataset, including the data collection procedure, experience summarization of people who stutter, severity assessment of stuttering events and technical validation of the collected data. The dataset is released as an open access to further speech technology development. © 2025 IEEE.

Multi-Scale Feature Guided Transformer for Image Inpainting

In recent years, image restoration has witnessed remarkable advancements. However, reconstructing visually plausible textures while preserving global structural coherence remains a persistent challenge. Existing convolutional neural network (CNN)-based approaches are inherently limited by their local receptive fields, often struggling to capture global structure. Previously proposed methods mostly focus on structural priors to address the limitation of CNN's receptive field, but we believe that texture priors are also critical factors that influence the quality of image inpainting. To tackle semantic inconsistency and texture blurriness in current methods, we introduce a novel multi-stage restoration framework. Specifically, our architecture incorporates a dual-stream U-Net with attention mechanisms to extract multi-scale features. The mixed attention-gated feature fusion module exchanges and combines structure and texture features to generate multi-scale fused feature maps, which are progressively merged into the decoder to guide the Transformer to generate more realistic images. Additionally, we propose a feature selection feedforward network to replace traditional MLPs in Transformer blocks for adaptive feature refinement. Extensive experiments on CelebA-HQ and Paris StreetView datasets demonstrate superior performance both qualitatively and quantitatively compared to state-of-the-art methods. © 2025 The Author(s).
