The precise prediction of preoperative recurrence in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that is suitable for clinical application is still an open question. Recent advancements integrating genomic data with deep learning have shown promise in enhancing recurrence analysis in NSCLC patients. However, the lack of interpretability in the decision-making process of DNN models has hindered their clinical trustworthiness. In this paper, we propose a novel Biologically Informed Pathway-Aware Neural Network (BioPAN). By automatically extracting biological prior knowledge to guide the architecture of DNN models, we design a unified architecture of gene-pathway-biological process-disease. This approach endows each neuron with entity meaning and learns a multi-level view of biological pathways and processes related to recurrence for fully interpretable NSCLC recurrence prediction. We demonstrated that the proposed model well explains the molecular mechanisms linking genes to NSCLC recurrence, identifies several genes that significantly promote and inhibit recurrence, and elucidates the pivotal roles of various gene pathways at the biological process level. Moreover, it outperforms classical machine learning methods, provides fully interpretable biological information, and requires fewer parameters. Broadly, BioPAN enables clinical discovery and prediction, and may have general applicability across cancer types. © 2024 IEEE.

It is challenging to predict futures prices with traditional econometric models as it necessitates a comprehensive consideration of both historical observations and correlations among various futures. Spatial-temporal graph neural networks (STGNNs) offer a promising approach for modeling such complex spatio-temporal data. Nevertheless, the direct application of STGNNs to high-frequency futures data remains a challenge, as traders must account for both short- and long-term characteristics when making decisions. To capture these distinct timeframes, we leverage additional label information by devising four heterogeneous tasks: price regression, price gap regression, price moving average regression, and change-point detection. To make full use of these labels, we train the model in a continual manner. Traditional continual GNNs define the gradient of losses as parameter importance to overcome the catastrophic forgetting (CF) issue, while this is unsuitable for our heterogeneous tasks with losses in distinct spaces. Therefore, we propose to calculate the parameter importance with mutual information between the original observations and the extracted features. The empirical results based on 49 varieties of commodity futures demonstrate that our model achieves superior performance compared to the leading approaches, highlighting the effectiveness of our approach in modeling the intricate dynamics of the futures market. © 2024 IEEE.

Multi-objective Bayesian optimization (MOBO) has shown promising performance on various expensive multi-objective optimization problems (EMOPs). However, effectively modeling complex distributions of the Pareto optimal solutions is difficult with limited function evaluations. Existing Pareto set learning algorithms may exhibit considerable instability in such expensive scenarios, leading to significant deviations between the obtained solution set and the Pareto set (PS). In this paper, we propose a novel Composite Diffusion Model based Pareto Set Learning algorithm (CDM-PSL) for expensive MOBO. CDM-PSL includes both unconditional and conditional diffusion model for generating high-quality samples efficiently. Besides, we introduce a weighting method based on information entropy to balance different objectives. This method is integrated with a guiding strategy to appropriately balancing different objectives during the optimization process. Experimental results on both synthetic and real-world problems demonstrates that CDM-PSL attains superior performance compared with state-of-the-art MOBO algorithms. Book flipping videos present a distinctive challenge for information extraction, requiring the identification of frames with clear text visibility during dynamic page turns. This paper introduces a novel approach to frame classification in book flipping videos, leveraging the combined effect of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Long Short-Term Memory networks (LSTMs). In particular, a CNN-LSTM model is employed, where a pre-trained CNN captures spatial features, and LSTMs extend the model's capability to distinguish temporal dependencies critical for page turn detection. Unlike conventional methods, this approach processes entire video sequences, enabling the model to learn intricate Frame of Interest (FoI) detection features indicative of page turns and text visibility. The proposed model offers improved interpretability, effectively classifying frames without compromising transparency. The research opens avenues for automated book digitization, digital library creation, and educational technology applications, enhancing information extraction and reliability from book flipping videos. © 2024 IEEE.

One of the most important subjects in statistics is the theory of estimation. In this paper, we consider the generalized Bayes shrinkage estimator of the mean vector for multivariate normal distribution with the unknown covariance matrix under balanced quadratic loss. Also, we find the minimax and admissible estimator of the mean vector based on the generalized Bayes estimator. We obtain Stein’s unbiased risk estimator (SURE) threshold with a generalized Bayes shrinkage estimator and we find the wavelet shrinkage generalized Bayes SURE. Finally, we present a simulation study to test the validity of the generalized Bayes SURE and the concrete compressive strength dataset is given to test the efficiency of this estimator in denoising. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Globally, the development of Intelligent Cyber-Physical Transportation Systems (ICTS) aims to tackle several challenges, including reducing traffic accidents and fuel usage, alleviating congestion, shortening travel time, and enhancing overall transportation safety. These systems leverage advanced customer-centric communication and networked control methods, such as inter-vehicle, vehicle-to-roadside (V2R), and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication through the use of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) to cover all aspects of transportation-based information. In existing systems, once devices are registered with a Trusted Authority (TA), subsequent authentication still relies on the TA's assistance. However, these devices typically remain stationary, and frequent interaction with the TA becomes impractical and costly in highly mobile VANET environments. To address this challenge, we propose a secure access control protocol with conditional privacy for VANETs. Unlike other protocols, our protocol does not require the TA's involvement during authentication between vehicles and RSUs. Additionally, our protocol leverages pseudonym mechanisms to provide conditional privacy, enabling legitimate vehicles to remain anonymous while malicious ones can be tracked. Our proposed scheme is supported by both formal and informal security analyses and has been shown to be secure against several known attacks in VANETs. Furthermore, compared to relevant studies, our protocol achieves 30.2505% of efficiency in terms of computation cost and 11.09276% of efficiency in terms of communication cost, respectively. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a promising approach for privacy-preserving model training across decentralized devices. However, it faces challenges such as statistical heterogeneity and susceptibility to adversarial attacks, which can impact model robustness and fairness. Personalized FL attempts to provide some relief by customizing models for individual clients. However, it falls short in addressing server-side aggregation vulnerabilities. We introduce a novel method called FedAA, which optimizes client contributions via Adaptive Aggregation to enhance model robustness against malicious clients and ensure fairness across participants in non-identically distributed settings. To achieve this goal, we propose an approach involving a Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient-based algorithm for continuous control of aggregation weights, an innovative client selection method based on model parameter distances, and a reward mechanism guided by validation set performance. Empirically, extensive experiments demonstrate that, in terms of robustness, FedAA outperforms the state-of-the-art methods, while maintaining comparable levels of fairness, offering a promising solution to build resilient and fair federated systems. Biomedical Wireless Sensor Networks (BWSN) is major technique for Health Care applications for providing quality of life with minimum cost. To enforce the quality of medical care provided to the citizen, such networks should be integrated with existing network infrastructures. The requirement of quality of service should be concentrated on development stages and are monitored for the duration of network operation. The life time of the network is most relevant feature for ensuring the quality of medical care requirements. In order to increases the network lifetime, maintaining the remaining energy of each sensor node with reliable communication link throughout the network. An energy aware clustering for biomedical wireless sensor network (EACBWSN) is proposed for increasing the network lifetime by minimizing the energy consumption among sensor nodes and provides a reliable communication link between sensor nodes. The proposed algorithm efficiently prolong the lifetime of the network when compared with existing algorithm. © 2023 IEEE.

In response to growing security concerns and the increasing demand for face recognition (FR) technology in various sectors, this research explores the application of deep learning techniques, specifically pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models, in the field of FR. The study harnesses the power of five pre-trained CNN models—DenseNet201, ResNet152V2, MobileNetV2, SeResNeXt, and Xception—for robust feature extraction, followed by SoftMax classification. A novel weighted average ensemble model, meticulously optimized through a grid search technique, is introduced to augment feature extraction and classification efficacy. Emphasizing the significance of robust data pre-processing, encompassing resizing, data augmentation, splitting, and normalization, the research endeavors to fortify the reliability of FR systems. Methodologically, the study systematically investigates hyperparameters across deep learning models, fine-tuning network depth, learning rate, activation functions, and optimization methods. Comprehensive evaluations unfold across diverse datasets to discern the effectiveness of the proposed models. Key contributions of this work encompass the utilization of pre-trained CNN models for feature extraction, extensive evaluation across multiple datasets, the introduction of a weighted average ensemble model, emphasis on robust data pre-processing, systematic hyperparameter tuning, and the utilization of comprehensive evaluation metrics. The results, meticulously analyzed, unveil the superior performance of the proposed method, consistently outshining alternative models across pivotal metrics, including Recall, Precision, F1 Score, Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC), and Accuracy. Notably, the proposed method attains an exceptional accuracy of 99.48% on the labeled faces in the wild (LFW) dataset, surpassing erstwhile state-of-the-art benchmarks. Efficient Resource Allocation in Computing Power Networks Considering Similar Task Merging: A Lyapunov Optimization-Based DRL Approach

The cloud-edge-terminal architecture relies on hierarchy for resource allocation but lacks global optimization. The computing power network (CPN) introduces a new distributed computing paradigm, integrating cross-domain, heterogeneous resources for global scheduling. However, most CPN research focuses on task optimization during resource allocation, while neglecting the similarity of random tasks before the allocation stage. Additionally, fragmented CPN resources and complex task demands pose challenges to global load balancing. This paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning framework with task merging and congestion avoidance for on-demand resource allocation. Specifically, a low-complexity similar task merging algorithm reduces redundant resource consumption during task preprocessing. In task offloading, the principal neighborhood aggregated graph neural network captures CPN's intricate features. Lyapunov optimization, integrated into a multi-threaded training framework, minimizes resource backlog congestion. A carefully designed reward function balances multiple objectives, enhancing computing resource utilization efficiency and ensuring system stability. Theoretical analysis shows that with control parameter V, the trade-off between resource utilization efficiency and system stability follows the relationship O(1/V), O(V). Extensive experiments demonstrate a 33.5% improvement in resource utilization efficiency and a 62.7% increase in task offloading success rates with respect to those in state-of-the-art algorithms. The proposed algorithm exhibits robustness and effectiveness, particularly in high-load and real network topologies. © 2014 IEEE.
