Currently, many cloud providers deploy their big data processing systems as cloud services, which helps users conveniently manage and process their data in clouds. Among different service providers’ big data processing services, how to evaluate and compare their scalability is an interesting and challenging work. Most traditional benchmark tools focus on performance evaluation of big data processing systems, such as aggregated throughput and IOPS, but fail to conduct a quantitative analysis of their scalability. In this paper, we propose a measurement methodology to quantify the scalability of big data processing services, which makes the cloud services scalability comparable. We conduct a group of comparative experiments on AliCloud E-MapReduce and Baidu MRS, and collect their respective scalability characteristics under Hadoop and Spark workloads. The scalability characteristics observed in our work could help cloud users choose the best cloud service platform to set up an optimized big data processing system to achieve their specific goals more successfully. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

DRAM is a significant source of server power consumption especially when the server runs memory intensive applications. Current power aware scheduling assumes that DRAM is as energy proportional as other components. However, the non-energy proportionality of DRAM significantly affects the power and energy consumption of the whole server system when running memory intensive applications. Thus good knowledge of server power characterization under memory intensive workloads can help better workload placement with power reduction. In this paper, we investigate the power characteristics of memory intensive applications on real rack servers of different generations. Through comprehensive analysis we find that (1) Server power consumption changes with workload intensity and concurrent execution threads. However, fully utilized memory systems are not the most energy efficient. (2) Powered memory modules of installed memory capacity, i.e. the memory capacity per processor core has significant impact on the application’s performance and server power consumption even if the memory system is not fully utilized. (3) Memory utilization is not always a good indicator for server power consumption when it is running memory intensive applications. Our experiments show that hardware configuration, workload types, as well as concurrently running threads have significant impact on a server’s energy efficiency when running memory intensive applications. Our findings presented in this paper provide useful insights and guidance to system designers, as well as data center operators for energy efficiency aware job scheduling and power reductions. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) has been extensively utilized in many real-life applications because it benefits from the detailed spectral information contained in each pixel. Notably, the complex characteristics i.e., the nonlinear relation among the captured spectral information and the corresponding object of HSI data make accurate classification challenging for traditional methods. In the last few years, Deep Learning (DL) has been substantiated as a powerful feature extractor that effectively addresses the nonlinear problems that appeared in a number of computer vision tasks. This prompts the deployment of DL for HSI classification (HSIC) which revealed good performance. This survey enlists a systematic overview of DL for HSIC and compared state-of-the-art strategies of the said topic. Primarily, we will encapsulate the main challenges of traditional machine learning for HSIC and then we will acquaint the superiority of DL to address these problems. This survey breakdown the state-of-the-art DL frameworks into spectral-features, spatial-features, and together spatial-spectral features to systematically analyze the achievements (future research directions as well) of these frameworks for HSIC. Moreover, we will consider the fact that DL requires a large number of labeled training examples whereas acquiring such a number for HSIC is challenging in terms of time and cost. Therefore, this survey discusses some strategies to improve the generalization performance of DL strategies which can provide some future guidelines. © 2021, CC BY.

Skull registration plays a fundamental role in forensic science and is crucial for craniofacial reconstruction. The complicated topology, lack of anatomical features, and low quality reconstructed mesh make skull registration challenging. In this work, we propose an automatic skull registration method based on the discrete uniformization theory, which can handle complicated topologies and is robust to low quality meshes. We apply dynamic Yamabe flow to realize discrete uniformization, which modifies the mesh combinatorial structure during the flow and conformally maps the multiply connected skull surface onto a planar disk with circular holes. The 3D surfaces can be registered by matching their planar images using harmonic maps. This method is rigorous with theoretic guarantee, automatic without user intervention, and robust to low mesh quality. Our experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and efficacy of the method.

In recent years, with the rapid development of science and technology, artificial intelligence has gradually entered various fields, and medicine is no exception. For the patients with hand or leg disability after hand injury surgery, the rapid development of artificial intelligence undoubtedly also contributes to improving their life a lot. Lately, gesture-based human-computer interaction has further accelerated its research due to its natural and intuitive interaction, but building a powerful gesture recognition system is still based on traditional visual methods such as the one proposed in [1] based on multiple cameras which uses color matching for motion detection and tracking and applies it to vehicle control;and another gesture recognition algorithm using stereo imaging and color vision proposed in [2]. The popularity of accelerometers and gyroscopes opens up a new path for gesture recognition. This paper presents a gesture recognition algorithm based on neural network using accelerometer and gyroscope, and applies it to a simple mobile game and smart socket. The mobile game will be used in the hand rehabilitation training of patients after hand injury surgery, leg disability patients inconvenience, smart socket will help them more easily and quickly manage household electricity. © 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Partial multi-label learning (PML) deals with the problem where each training example is assigned multiple candidate labels, only a part of which are correct. To learn from such PML examples, the straightforward model training tends to be misled by the noise candidate label set. To alleviate this problem, a coupled framework is established in this paper to learn the desired model and perform the relabeling procedure alternatively. In the relabeling procedure, instead of simply extracting relative label confidences, or deterministically eliminating low confidence labels and preserving high confidence labels as ground-truth ones, we introduce a soft sign thresholding operator to adaptively strengthen candidate labels with high confidence and weaken candidate labels with low confidence, which enlarges the difference of confidences of candidate labels within allowable range. We further show that the resulting nonconvex quadratic programming (QP) optimization problem can be relaxed into a convex QP problem with proper conditions. Extensive experiments on synthesized and real-world data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

This paper presents a novel saliency detection method based on weighted linear multiple kernel learning (WLMKL), which is able to adaptively combine different contrast measurements in a supervised manner. Three commonly used bottom-up visual saliency operations are first introduced, including corner-surround contrast (CSC), center-surround contrast (CESC), and global contrast (GC). Then these contrast measures are fed into our WLMKL framework to produce the final saliency map. We show that the assigned weights for each contrast feature maps are always normalized in our WLMKL formulation. In addition, the proposed approach benefits from the advantages of the contribution of each individual contrast operation, and thus produces more robust and accurate saliency maps. The extensive experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed model, and demonstrate the combination is superior to individual subcomponent. © 2020, Springer science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH. The wide deployments of GPS-embedded devices have produced multiple rapid voluminous trajectory streams, which needs to be analyzed to extract abnormal behaviors of moving objects in real-time. To date, outlier detection over distributed trajectory streams has not received enough focuses due to the constraint factors like skewness distribution and evolving nature of trajectory data, and on-the-y execution requirement with minimal communication cost. In this paper, we present the first scalable decentralized outlier detection framework over distributed trajectory streams, called ODDTS. It consists of remote site processing and co-ordinator processing, with the aim of continuously provid-ing feature-grouping based outliers detection over distribut-ed trajectory streams. Extensive experiments over real data demonstrate high detecting validity, less communication cost and linear scalability of ODDTS method for online identify-ing outliers upon distributed trajectory streams. © 2018 by SIAM.

SDSN@RT: a middleware environment for single-instance multi-tenant cloud applications

With the Single-Instance Multi-Tenancy (SIMT) model for composite software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications, a single composite application instance can host multiple tenants, yielding the benefits of better service and resource utilization, and reduced operational cost for the SaaS provider. An SIMT application needs to share services and their aggregation (the application) among its tenants while supporting variations in the functional and performance requirements of the tenants. The SaaS provider requires a middleware environment that can deploy, enact and manage a designed SIMT application, to achieve the varied requirements of the different tenants in a controlled manner. This paper presents the SDSN@RT (software-Defined Service Networks @ RunTime) middleware environment that can meet the aforementioned requirements. SDSN@RT represents an SIMT composite cloud application as a multi-tenant service network, where the same service network simultaneously hosts a set of virtual service networks (VSNs), one for each tenant. A service network connects a set of services, and coordinates the interactions between them. A VSN realizes the requirements for a specific tenant and can be deployed, configured, and logically isolated in the service network at runtime. SDSN@RT also supports the monitoring and runtime changes of the deployed multi-tenant service networks. We show the feasibility of SDSN@RT with a prototype implementation, and demonstrate its capabilities to host SIMT applications and support their changes with a case study. A threshold effect of coupling delays on intra-layer synchronization in duplex networks

This paper investigates the impact of inter-layer coupling functions and intra-layer coupling delays on intra-layer synchronization regions and sychronizability. It is found that the inter-layer coupling functions have great influence on intra-layer synchronization regions, as well as on the intra-layer synchronizability. In particular, there exists an inter-layer coupling function such that the inter-layer coupling strength neither improves nor weakens the intra-layer synchronizability. Furthermore, no matter which one of three inter-layer coupling functions is chosen, a small intra-layer delay always keeps the intra-layer synchronized regions almost unchanged, implying that the small delay neither enhances nor suppresses the intra-layer synchronizability. At the same time the delay greatly frustrates the synchronizability in each layer when it is greater than some threshold. Our results may have potential applications for interconnected technological networks where communication delays are inevitably present.
