This paper describes the design and development cycle of a 3D biochip separator and the modelling analysis of flow behaviour in the biochip microchannel features. The focus is on identifying the difference between 2D and 3D implementations as well as developing basic forms of 3D microfluidic separators. Five variants, based around the device are proposed and analysed. These include three variations of the branch channels (circular, rectangular, disc) and two variations of the main channel (solid and concentric). Ignoring the initial transient behaviour and assuming steady state flow has been established, the efficiencies of the flow between the main and side channels for the different designs are analysed and compared with regard to relevant bio-microfluidic laws or effects (bifurcation law, Fahraeus effect, cell-free phenomenon, bending channel effect and laminar flow behaviour). The modelling results identify flow features in microchannels, a constriction and bifurcations and show detailed differences in flow fields between the various designs. The manufacturing process using injection moulding for the initial base case design is also presented and discussed. The work reported here is supported as part of the UK funded 3D-MINTEGRATION project.

A method for extraction of the multi-layered social network based on the data about human collaborative achievements, in particular scientific papers, is presented in the paper. The objects linking people form a hierarchy, which is flattened in the pre-processing stage. Only one level of the hierarchy remains together with new activities moved from its other levels. DNA self-assembly that is fast developed in the fields of DNA computing and nano technology has become the focus of scientific fields. DNA self-assembly is a method that uses the characteristics of base-pair to form polyhedron or super molecular structure. This is a complex progress from disordered to ***, from simple to complicated. This paper mainly introduces that the DNA self-assembly technology is applied into the image encryption. In this paper, we proposed a complete design scheme of DNA tiles that is suitable for the image encryption. The DNA tiles mainly include five types, namely DNA tiles of the plaintext, DNA tiles of the encryption, DNA tiles of the cipertext, DNA tiles of the key and DNA tiles of the decryption. We present our experiences with an SMS-based system for providing transit information based solely on existing cellular and GPS networks. The aim is to permit the development of information services that do not rely on a central authority or complex web hosting. We developed and applied our system to the network of privately-run marshrutka buses in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. However, our goal is to more broadly address issues of ad-hoc shared transportation systems in the developing world. A custom designed GPS-GSM unit is placed on a vehicle, and users can query our server over SMS with their own non-GPS-enabled cell phones. We report on the accuracy of our location naming approach and estimates of bus arrival times. In addition, we summarize interviews with bus drivers and bus riders relating their views of the system and outline directions for future work. Our system is a grassroots solution to the persistent lack of transport information in developing countries. Copyright 2010 ACM.

For research on conceptual design of the complex product, it is necessary that a reliable theory is found to decide if the design structure is suit for custom requirement. The correlation matrixes among requirements, functions and structures are proposed. A block diagonal matrix of correlation matrix between functions and structures is given. The mathematical models of multi-object optimization structure design are provided, and then calculated by the hybrid genetic algorithm. An example for solar energy automobile is given to show that this method is able to realize optimization structure design fitting for the requirements. In addition, the approaches can provide good Pareto optimization solutions.
