In wireless communication, ad hoc mobile network is a collection of mobile nodes that are dynamically and arbitrarily located in such a manner that the interconnections between nodes are capable of changing on a continual basis. In order to facilitate communication within the network, a routing protocol is used to discover routes between nodes. Routing is a fundamental issue for mobile ad hoc network (MANET). Many routing protocols have been proposed for MANET and some of them have been widely used. This paper utilizes Artificial Intelligent (Neural network and neuro-fuzzy) to model MANET routing for three different routing protocols: dynamic source routing (DSR), ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) and optimized link state routing (OLSR) and compare them with the traditional mathematical equation models. The results show that artificial intelligent (AI) models are more accurate and presenting to MANET than traditional mathematical equations.

This article presents the results of two studies on using an innovative pedagogical strategy in teaching mathematical modelling and applications to engineering students. Both studies are dealing with introducing non-traditional contexts for engineering students in teaching/learning of mathematical modelling and applications: environment and ecology. The aims of using these contexts were: to introduce students to some of the techniques, methodologies and principles of mathematical modelling for ecological and environmental systems;to involve the students in solving real-life problems adjusted to their region emphasizing the aspects of both survival (short term) and sustainability (long term);to encourage students to pay attention to environmental issues. On one hand, the contexts are not directly related to engineering. On the other hand, the chances are that many graduates of engineering will deal with mathematical modelling of environmental systems in one way or another in their future work because nearly every engineering activity has an impact on the environment. The first study is a parallel study conducted in New Zealand and Germany simultaneously with first-year students studying engineering mathematics. The second study is a case study of the experimental course Mathematical Modelling of Survival and Sustainability taught to a mixture of year 2-5 engineering students in Germany by a visiting lecturer from New Zealand. The models used with the students from both studies had several special features. Analysis of students' responses to questionnaires, their comments and attitudes towards the innovative approach in teaching are presented in the article. © The Author 2008. HCI issues for older people are extremely important in light of the rapidly ageing population in developed countries. In addition, technology offers great potential for this age group but it will only be useful if it can be used effectively by its target users. In this workshop, we will therefore examine how HCI can address the needs and situations of this increasing older population. We aim to build up and support the research community in this area by providing a forum for the presentation of current work and a platform for discussing key challenges in this area. This workshop continues a successful series held at HCI in recent years and this year focuses on methodology, exploring how older people can be considered and included most effectively in design. © 2008 The Author Published by the British Computer Society.

In this paper we investigate potential benefits that an adaptive delayed channel access algorithm can attain for the next-generation wireless LANs, the IEEE 802.11n. We show that the performance of frame aggregation introduced by the 802.11n adheres due to the priority mechanism of the legacy 802.11e EDCA scheduler, resulting in a poor overall performance. Because high priority flows have low channel utilization, the low priority flows throughputs can be amerced further. By introducing an additional delay at the MAC layer, before the channel access scheduling, it will retain aggregate sizes at higher numbers and consequently a better channel utilization. Also, in order to support both UDP and TCP transport layer protocols, the algorithm's operational conditions are kept adaptive. The simulation results demonstrate that our proposed adaptive delayed channel access outperforms significantly the current 802.1 In specification and non-adaptive delayed channel access.

A star-topology local area network is designed to carry optical packet traffic, employing collision-free switching. Data forwarding is under centralized control based on scheduled resource reservation, eliminating the need for optical buffers in the central switch. Packets are stored in electronic buffers within the end stations prior to their electronic-to-optical conversion and transmission in the network. With the combination of central control and the edge buffering, the system forms a stable, efficient and low-cost network with smoothed traffic. Modeling and simulations have been carried out using OPNET modeler to evaluate network performance with TCP/IP traffic.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is an important service with strict Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). The popular Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) of IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol adopts a Binary Exponential Back-off (BEB) procedure to reduce the packet collision probability in WLANs. In DCF, the size of contention window is doubled upon a collision regardless of the network loads. This paper presents an adaptive MAC scheme to improve the QoS of VoIP in WLANs. This scheme applies a threshold of the collision rate to switch between two different functions for increasing the size of contention window based on the status of network loads. The performance of this scheme is investigated and compared to the original DCF using the network simulator NS-2. The performance results reveal that the adaptive scheme is able to achieve the higher throughput and medium utilization as well as lower access delay and packet loss probability than the original DCF.

This paper deals with two relatively less well studied problems in Textual CBR, namely visualizing and evaluating complexity of textual case bases. The first is useful in case base maintenance, the second in making informed choices regarding case base representation and tuning of parameters for the TCBR system, and also for explaining the behaviour of different retrieval/classification techniques over diverse case bases. We present an approach to visualize textual case bases by "stacking" similar cases and features close to each other in an image derived from the case-feature matrix. We propose a complexity measure called GAME that exploits regularities in stacked images to evaluate the alignment between problem and solution components of cases. GAME class , a counterpart of GAME in classification domains, shows a strong correspondence with accuracies reported by standard classifiers over classification tasks of varying complexity. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2008.

When classifying data obtained by multiply sampling the same underlying entity, it is expected that characterizations based on aggregation of the information provided by all of the samples will be more accurate. Electromyographic (EMG) data presents such a scenario when individual motor unit potential trains (MUPTs) detected in a muscle during voluntary contraction are examined. We present a MUPT characterization technique based on quantitative analysis of EMG data, and further examine the value of various systems of aggregating MUPT information in order to achieve an overall electrophysiological assessment of the muscle. The data underlying this study was drawn from a population of patients who exhibit forearm pain associated with repetitive strain injury, and it is expected that these results will assist in electrophysiologically characterizing muscles of individuals having this condition and distinguishing these muscles from those of normative individuals and, in future, those suffering from other related conditions.

Recently, there has been an increased awareness in the general public, in government and in business that people with disabilities and older people have distinct needs and preferences that must be met in order for them to participate as equal members of environments incorporating information and communications technologies. With this increased awareness has come legislation and company policies stating the necessary provision of accessible systems for disabled and older people in all facets of society. In order for these policies to be properly implemented there is a need to further understand accessibility and its impact on the people and systems around us. This workshop will focus on exploring the concept of accessibility and the boundaries of accessibility research. It is intended to bring together individuals working in disparate fields of research to improve the definition of accessibility and to refine our understanding of the as yet unaddressed barriers in the information society such as the impact of mobile technology and the aging population. © 2008 The Author Published by the British Computer Society.
