Summary form only given. British universities today have to look at other activities for income generation. Teaching is not enough to support the financial requirements of a modern present day university. One of the greatest resources that universities have is their students. The students develop new competencies and in many final year undergraduate engineeringdesign courses develop products which can be evaluated and have the potential to be commercialized successfully. The majority of these products have already completed various feasibility studies, plus a fully tested and evaluated prototype along with a business plan for Company set/start up scenario. This paper explains a new process that Bournemouth University hopes to adopt. The same process maybe adopted and adapted to suit each university's individual requirements. The key to this process is collaboration with industrial partners developing strong links and successful partnerships.

The foremost objective of system designers is to develop hardware with the correct functionality in the shortest possible time. Therefore, they are keen to exploit any methodology that will help to reduce development times, increase reuse and make 'right first time' design an achievable target. This paper proposes a method that permits rapid prototyping of custom hardware for the implementation of real-time image processing systems. This methodology consists of partitioning the system into component blocks and then prototyping using a library of generic VHDL models. Each component model has a standard interface and has been simulated and synthesised to a technology-independent level. Systems can be quickly and easily constructed using this library and a model-oriented design flow. This technique permits the rapid prototyping of hardware whilst allowing the functionality and performance of the proposed system to be quickly assessed and verified throughout the design cycle.

This paper presents the application of the technologies of knowledge sharing and reuse to solve production problems within the metal casting industry. The NewSun Workbench, a knowledge sharing and reuse workbench, is introduced to facilitate the construction of a new knowledge base, and to simplify the interdependency between agents. Two expert system shells, Goldworks and KAPPA-PC, have been used to implement two Knowledge-Based Systems and one domain ontology in this exercise namely, a Process Control Expert System, a Fault Diagnosis Expert System, and a Casting Production Domain Ontology.

Djinn is an API for solid modelling which is defined in the language of point-sets and is thus independent of any particular modelling data-structure (e.g, boundary representations or CSG trees). In designing this API, several significant and interesting questions have arisen, including: the basic feasibility of the approach;deciding how to support cellular models;providing facilities for navigation without traditional data-structures;addressing the problems of 'tweaks' and blends;ensuring that labels are preserved under geometric operations;permitting regions in which changes to a model have taken place to be identified;coping with approximate models;deciding whether to support variational models;keeping sweeps and transforms within a reasonable domain, and providing facilities to handle the many types of parametric surface. These questions are not all fully answered, but progress continues towards a published interface and C++ language binding.

Sensors and actuators with built-in local intelligence are often described as microsystems. The integration of processing electronics at the sensor and actuator level enables the distribution of processing tasks such as calibration and filtering as well as test and diagnostic functions from upper system hierarchies to lower levels. This paper describes Built-In-Self-Test (BIST) and diagnostic strategies for Safety Critical Microsystems. It compares different approaches and demonstrates the importance of utilising Reliability Indicators (Rls) for on-chip monitoring and diagnostics. The close relationship between design for Testability (DfT) for post-production tests and the BIST strategies for on-line monitoring is outlined. A multichip design strategy is described for an example microsystem. Crown Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Multichannel time-series result from observations of a given engineering, biomedicai, econometric or environmental variable taken at different locations. Processing this type of signal presents problems associated with its extrapolation in given space ranges and its possible prediction. This paper presents a comparison of seasonal AR modelling of such signals and the application of wavelet networks to the system identification and prediction of a particular signal. The choice of wavelet functions and the optimization of their coefficients is discussed as well. Each method suggested in the paper is verified for simulated signals at first and then used for the analysis of real signals, including the observation of air pollution. All algorithms are written in the MATLAB environment.

Conceptual modelling is appropriate at representing and manipulating abstract constructs (eg, design concepts, notions and ideas) that are under-developed and belong to an ill-defined knowledge domain. It is also useful at representing an application domain as perceived by a user and can assist in the development of system requirements. In this research, conceptual modelling is applied to the domain of manufacturing flexibility, and it is proposed that the approach offers advantages over conventional, quantitative, model-based formulations for investigating and representing the concepts of that domain. This paper examines the basic concepts of manufacturing flexibility, proposes a conceptual model based on this examination, and outlines an implementation or mapping of the conceptual model in a knowledge-based system. At a detailed level, the conceptual model is translated into a network of concept nodes, used to represent four types of flexibility, and the design features of machines and systems identified as significant contributors to, or determinants of, flexibility. Concept nodes are connected together with qualitative and quantitative relationships. It is thought that the model could have application in a number of domains of manufacturing, and that by configuring the model for a domain-specific application, users could identify particular design features of machines and manufacturing systems and develop flexibility requirements more formally.
