The article demonstrates the brief fabrication method of the flexible organic thin film transistor (OTFT) developed earlier and its utilization for the development of various basic logic gates (NAND, NOR, AND, NOT, and OR Gates). The compact modeling of the fabricated device and the implementation of the logic gates has been carried out using Silvaco-Techmodeler and Silvaco-Gateway tools, respectively. The device can operate at -2 V supply with good electrical characteristics in terms of $-2\mu \mathrm{A}$ drain current, $\mathrm{I}_{\text{ON}}/\mathrm{I}_{\text{OFF}}\sim 10^{3}$ ‘ and $\mu_{p}\sim 0.1\text{cm}^{2}/\mathrm{V}-\sec$ respectively. The Silvaco-Gateway tool implements the logic gates with excellent characteristics, demonstrating logic swing of 1.18 V and a delay of 3.7 ns. The logic gates also possess a good transient characteristic with all four possible logic inputs (00, 01, 10, and 11). The Silvaco-Techmodeler tool models the device with an accuracy of approximately 100%, with a 0.07% and 0.08% error between the experimental and modeled data, respectively. The cost-efficiently fabricated solution-processed transistor in this article can be further utilized in the fields of medical and sensing applications.

A Comprehensive Study of Structural Pruning for Vision Models

Structural pruning has emerged as a promising approach for producing more efficient models. Nevertheless, the community suffers from a lack of standardized benchmarks and metrics, leaving the progress in this area not fully comprehended. To fill this gap, we present the first comprehensive benchmark, termed PruningBench, for structural pruning. PruningBench showcases the following three characteristics: 1) PruningBench employs a unified and consistent framework for evaluating the effectiveness of diverse structural pruning techniques;2) PruningBench systematically evaluates 16 existing pruning methods, encompassing a wide array of models (e.g., CNNs and ViTs) and tasks (e.g., classification and detection);3) PruningBench provides easily implementable interfaces to facilitate the implementation of future pruning methods, and enables the subsequent researchers to incorporate their work into our leaderboards. Sequential Recommenders (SRs) are trained to predict the next item as the target given its preceding items as the input, assuming every input-target pair is matched and is reliable for training. However, users can be induced by external distractions to click on items inconsistent with their true preferences, resulting in unreliable training instances with mismatched input-target pairs. To resist unreliable data, researchers attempt to develop Robust SRs (RSRs). However, our data analysis unveils that existing RSRs are data-driven. That is, for most instances formed by infrequently co-occurred items, existing RSRs are uncertain about their reliability. To fill this gap, we propose a generic framework - LLM4RSR (Large Language Models for Robust Sequential Recommendation) to semantically complement data-driven RSRs by correcting uncertain instances into reliable ones based on LLMs' semantic comprehension of items beyond co-occurrence. In this way, RSRs can be re-trained with the corrected data for better accuracy. This is a selective knowledge distillation procedure, where the LLM acts as a teacher guiding student RSRs via uncertain instances. To align LLMs with the data correction task and mitigate inherent hallucinations, we equip the LLM with profile, plan, and memory modules, which are automatically optimized via textual gradient descent, eliminating the need for human effort and expertise. Experiments on four real-world datasets spanning eight backbones verify the generality, effectiveness, and efficiency of LLM4RSR. Self and peer assessment have been shown to help improve student engagement in assessment tasks, to improve behaviour and maintain interest and attention levels, and ultimately to improve student performance. In this study, we critically evaluated the process, reliability, validity, benefits and drawbacks of self and peer assessment in a first-year product design project with the aim to also establish a recommended resolution for rubric grade boundaries. Students (n = 51) carried out five separate week-long design projects. They then undertook self and peer assessments and were assessed by the module tutors, by additional staff (both technical and academic not linked to the project module) and students on other years of the course. All staff had reasonable agreement with tutor grades, although there were mixed results on whether these were a valid means to accurately assess the project outcome-depending on which statistical analysis was adopted. For all staff, >90% of their assessments were within 10% of the benchmark (agreed) grades, while for student self-Assessments 84.2% were within 10% and for student peer assessments 60.5% of the overall grades were within 10% of the tutors grades. When we analysed the data for individual tutor marks for all assessment criteria, 37.3% of grades were within 5% of each other, 85.8% were within 10% of each other, and the range within which 95% of grades could be bound was 20%, suggesting that the resolution of our rubric grade boundaries should be increased to 20% between grades boundaries for individual criteria in such practical assessment tasks in design. More generally, understanding the reliability and validity of assessment processes can help inform the assessment design to ensure an appropriate resolution is used for criteria. © International Conference on engineering and Product design Education, E and PDE *** right reserved.

Accurate calibration of finite element (FE) models is essential across various biomechanical applications, including human intervertebral discs (IVDs), to ensure their reliability and use in diagnosing and planning treatments. However, traditional calibration methods are computationally intensive, requiring iterative, derivative-free optimization algorithms that often take days to converge. This study addresses these challenges by introducing a novel, efficient, and effective calibration method demonstrated on a human L4-L5 IVD FE model as a case study using a neural network (NN) surrogate. The NN surrogate predicts simulation outcomes with high accuracy, outperforming other machine learning models, and significantly reduces the computational cost associated with traditional FE simulations. Next, a Projected Gradient Descent (PGD) approach guided by gradients of the NN surrogate is proposed to efficiently calibrate FE models. Our method explicitly enforces feasibility with a projection step, thus maintaining material bounds throughout the optimization process. The proposed method is evaluated against state-of-the-art Genetic Algorithm (GA) and inverse model baselines on synthetic and in vitro experimental datasets. Our approach demonstrates superior performance on synthetic data, achieving a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.06 compared to the baselines’ MAE of 0.18 and 0.54, respectively. On experimental specimens, our method outperforms the baseline in 5 out of 6 cases. While our approach requires initial dataset generation and surrogate training, these steps are performed only once, and the actual calibration takes under three seconds. In contrast, traditional calibration time scales linearly with the number of specimens, taking up to 8 days in the worst-case. Such efficiency paves the way for applying more complex FE models, potentially extending beyond IVDs, and enabling accurate patient-specific simulations. © 2025 The Authors

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a rise in residential office utilisation. As a result, it has become increasingly important to configure workspaces and design dwellings to ensure adequate indoor environmental quality conditions, so as to mitigate detrimental health impacts caused by inadequate home office spaces. Currently, UK industry best practice focuses on rationalising the window-to-wall ratio (WWR) for dwellings. However, there is an increased regulatory stringency on new build glazing thermal performance, without much regard to achieving adequate daylighting. This paper looks into optimising daylighting sufficiency within newly constructed UK housing to attain the specific daylighting availability requirements set out within the British Standard – BS EN 17037:2018+A1:2021, whilst simultaneously ensuring visual comfort, thermal comfort, and sustainability. A quantitative analytical methodology was adopted through a calibrated daylighting model simulation in association with thermal modelling for a typical semi-detached house in the UK. The performance of five glazing solutions with varying WWR was assessed against BS EN 17037:2018+A1:2021. The WWR of all glazing types was increased from an initial WWR of 15.26% until daylighting sufficiency was realised. Our findings show that the house attained inadequate daylighting with the initial WWR of 15.26%, as 77% of frequently occupied spaces achieved an illuminance of 100 lux for 50% of the daylight hours and 300 lux for 42% of the frequently occupied space for 50% of the daylight hours, which failed to comply with the standard. Thus, a larger WWR of 20% is required for the house to comply with the current daylighting standard. In this study, an optimisation strategy was conceived to review a combination of key parameters for optimising the glazing selection. Business models and decision making play a vital role in the delivery and implementation of technological innovations in the healthcare industry, especially for entrepreneurs, healthcare providers, managers, researchers and policy makers. However, despite its significance, current conceptualisations of business models do not adequately guide in designing business models particular to the complex and dynamic healthcare environment. With the exploratory nature and lack of research in this area, this paper aims to design a new methodology to develop business models incorporating multidimensional implications of various stakeholder perspectives. A systematic literature review of existing methods in business models and decision making has been done and a new methodology has been proposed, entitled Thematic + TISM + MICMAC = TTM methodology. An application of this method has been tested with empirical findings from the healthcare diagnostics value chain to establish the key factors of innovative business model development in healthcare decision making. Limitations, future directions and challenges in the proposed methodology are also discussed. It is hoped that this study will guide practitioners in future work towards advancement of these techniques and will help the managers to select better decisions by making use of these methodologies. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This study describes a method of setting and assessing group projects that has been developed and successfully implemented on our undergraduate engineering and Product design degrees for over 10 years. A simple weighted-matrix method, applied in Excel, generates a weighting factor based on a peer assessment of the contribution and effort of each student. This weighting factor, when multiplied by the group mark, is used to calculate an individual student's mark. The methodology used was reviewed considering relevant literature in the fields of group project learning and project-based learning, with implications for large cohorts discussed. Natural disasters, particularly earthquakes and floods, can generate substantial waste, presenting challenges for waste management and energy recovery. This study explores the application of machine learning, specifically Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), to optimize Waste-to-Energy (WTE) conversion processes for disaster-generated Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Using data from Sundernagar City, India, we constructed and evaluated multiple ANN models (collectively named ANNSNAGAR) to estimate High Heating Value, HHV, based on ultimate/elemental analysis of MSW. The models were rigorously assessed using statistical error metrics. Our best-performing network, with a 9-50-1 architecture (ANNMS), achieved a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 1.47%, demonstrating high predictive accuracy.

To improve the operational efficiency and reliability of high-speed trains (HSTs), the Automatic Train Control System has received considerable attention. Train-to-Train (T2T) communication is one of the critical technologies for autonomous train operation. However, the development of T2T communication technology still faces many challenges, particularly regarding communication distance limitations and reliability issues. To address these challenges, this paper introduces an innovative T2T collaborative communication model for HSTs, focusing on highly reliable information interaction and sharing in distributed collaboration environments. The model employs dynamic and static nodes to enable direct T2T information exchange. Using formal verification and state space analysis to ensure the system's reliability and performance. A Build-in-Test (BIT) mechanism is implemented for fault detection and isolation, enhancing the reliability of the system. By analyzing the performance indicators of the system in different scenarios, the reliability of the system was verified. © 2025 IEEE.
