Sex-dependent Pathophysiology and Therapeutic Considerations in Right Heart Disease

Right ventricular (RV) adaptation to the increased afterload in the setting of pulmonary hypertension (PH) and other cardiac and pulmonary vascular conditions is a major determinant of survival. Although the RV remains understudied and less well understood than the left ventricle, recent advances have been made in understanding the function and biology of the RV in health and in disease, particularly in PH. RV adaptation in PH exhibits significant sexual dimorphisms in pathophysiology, adaptation, and outcomes. Despite a higher incidence of PH, women consistently demonstrate better RV adaptation and survival rates in the setting of increased RV afterload compared with men. Sexual dimorphisms extend to therapy responsiveness, with women benefiting more from certain pulmonary vasodilators and exhibiting superior RV recovery. In this review we discuss the current literature on sexual dimorphisms in RV structure, function, and molecular pathways in health and disease, as well as in RV-specific clinical manifestations, treatments, and outcomes in PH. Sex steroid–mediated effects as well as emerging studies on sex steroid–independent effects are reviewed. In general, sex steroids such as 17β-estradiol and dehydroepiandrosterone exert RV-protective effects. In contrast, testosterone negatively impacts RV structure and function. Emerging evidence highlights the influence of nonhormonal genetic determinants, such as BMPR1A and DMRT2 loci, which are associated with better RV function in women. A better understanding of the interplay between sex hormones, genetic factors, and RV biology is crucial for advancing and developing RV-directed therapies for patients of either sex. © 2025 Canadian Cardiovascular Society

Freshwater salinisation and alkalinisation strongly depend on human and natural factors. We used an explainable machine learning approach to investigate the impact of natural and human factors on the salinity and alkalinity in rivers in the United States. The model achieved coefficient of determination of 0.89 for salinity predictions and 0.92 for alkalinity predictions. Shapley additive explanations revealed salinisation is driven mainly by human factors like population density (18 %) and impervious surface percentage (13 %) and natural factors like run-off (14 %). The alkalinisation is mainly influenced by natural processes such as runoff (36 %) and soil-pH (20 %). © 2024 The Authors

With biodiversity loss escalating globally, a step change is needed in our capacity to accurately monitor species populations across ecosystems. Robotic and autonomous systems (RAS) offer technological solutions that may substantially advance terrestrial biodiversity monitoring, but this potential is yet to be considered systematically. We used a modified Delphi technique to synthesize knowledge from 98 biodiversity experts and 31 RAS experts, who identified the major methodological barriers that currently hinder monitoring, and explored the opportunities and challenges that RAS offer in overcoming these barriers. Biodiversity experts identified four barrier categories: site access, species and individual identification, data handling and storage, and power and network availability. Robotics experts highlighted technologies that could overcome these barriers and identified the developments needed to facilitate RAS-based autonomous biodiversity monitoring. Some existing RAS could be optimized relatively easily to survey species but would require development to be suitable for monitoring of more ‘difficult’ taxa and robust enough to work under uncontrolled conditions within ecosystems. Other nascent technologies (for instance, new sensors and biodegradable robots) need accelerated research. Overall, it was felt that RAS could lead to major progress in monitoring of terrestrial biodiversity by supplementing rather than supplanting existing methods. Transdisciplinarity needs to be fostered between biodiversity and RAS experts so that future ideas and technologies can be codeveloped effectively. © The Author(s) 2025.

Scalable and transferable methods for generating reliable reference data for automated remote sensing approaches are crucial, especially for mapping complex Earth surface processes such as gully erosion in low-populated and inaccessible areas. As an alternative for the labour-intense in-situ authoritative mapping, collaborative approaches enable volunteers to generate redundant independent geoinformation by digitising Earth observation imagery. We face the challenge of mapping the complex gully outlines integrating multi-user contributions of the same gully network. Comparing Sentinel 2, Bing Aerial, and unoccupied aerial vehicle orthophoto base maps, we examine the volunteered geographic information process and multi-contribution integration using Kalman filtering and machine learning to segment a gully border in a remote area in northwestern Namibia. The Kalman filtering integrates the different lines finding a smoothed solution, and a Random Forest model is used to identify mapping conditions and terrain features as key predictors for evaluating contributors' digitising quality. Assessing results with expert-based reference data, we identify ten contributions as optimal, yielding root mean square distance values of 19.1 m, 15.9 m and 16.6 m, and variability of 2.0 m, 4.2 m and 3.8 m (root mean square distance standard deviation) for Sentinel 2, Bing Aerial, and unoccupied aerial vehicle orthophoto, respectively. Eliminating the lowest performing contributions for Sentinel 2 using a Random Forest regression-based quality indicator improves the accuracy by up to 35% in the root mean square distance compared to a random selection, and up to 54% compared to a supervised remote sensing classification. Results for Sentinel 2 show that low slope, low terrain ruggedness index, and high normalised difference vegetation index values are correlated to high spatial mapping deviations, with Pearson correlation coefficients of −0.61, −0.5, and 0.18, respectively. Musical instruments are not static and neutral technological objects, but objects we shape through our designing and performing practices. Along these lines, various authors have argued for the relevance of practice research in the New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME) field. Most of these contributions tackle interface evaluation or issues related to musical practice. In contrast, technical processes are typically addressed from linear, goal-oriented narratives based on technical implementation that consider the instrument merely as a technical artefact. In this paper, we critique such technoscientific narratives through science and technology studies, human-computer interaction, design and NIME literature. We propose Technical Practice Research as an alternative mode of research in technical practice that places the locus of knowledge production in the practice rather than the technical artefact, by focussing on the first-person and real-time nature of technical practice. Although framed in the context of NIME, this proposal extends to other fields in which technical and creative practice are intertwined.

Non-Linear Tank Level Control for Industrial Applications

Tank level control is ubiquitous in industry. The focus of this paper is on accurate liquid level control in single tank systems which can be actuated continuously and modulation of the level setpoint is also required, for example in cascade control loops or supervisory Model Predictive Control (MPC) applications. To avoid common problems encountered when using fixed gain or adaptive/gain scheduled schemes, an accurate technique based around feedback linearization and Proportional Integral (PI) control is introduced. This simple controller can maintain linear performance over the full operating range of a uniform tank. As will be demonstrated, the implementation overhead compared to a regular PI controller is negligible, making it ideal for industrial implementation. Implementation details and parameter identification for adaptive implementation are discussed. Simulations coupled with experimental results using a large-scale laboratory level control system using commercial industrial control equipment validate the approach, and illustrate its effectiveness for both level tracking and disturbance rejection.

Measuring Perceptual Color Differences of Smartphone Photographs

Measuring perceptual color differences (CDs) is of great importance in modern smartphone photography. Despite the long history, most CD measures have been constrained by psychophysical data of homogeneous color patches or a limited number of simplistic natural photographic images. It is thus questionable whether existing CD measures generalize in the age of smartphone photography characterized by greater content complexities and learning-based image signal processors. In this paper, we put together so far the largest image dataset for perceptual CD assessment, in which the photographic images are 1) captured by six flagship smartphones, 2) altered by Photoshop®, 3) post-processed by built-in filters of the smartphones, and 4) reproduced with incorrect color profiles. We then conduct a large-scale psychophysical experiment to gather perceptual CDs of 30, 000 image pairs in a carefully controlled laboratory environment. Based on the newly established dataset, we make one of the first attempts to construct an end-to-end learnable CD formula based on a lightweight neural network, as a generalization of several previous metrics. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the optimized formula outperforms 33 existing CD measures by a large margin, offers reasonable local CD maps without the use of dense supervision, generalizes well to homogeneous color patch data, and empirically behaves as a proper metric in the mathematical sense. As emojis are increasingly used in everyday online communication such as messaging, email, and social networks, various techniques have attempted to improve the user experience in communicating emotions and information through emojis. Emoji recommendation is one such example in which machine learning is applied to predict which emojis the user is about to select, based on the user's current input message. Although emoji suggestion helps users identify and select the right emoji among a plethora of emojis, analyzing only a single sentence for this purpose has several limitations. First, various emotions, information, and contexts that emerge in a flow of conversation could be missed by simply looking at the most recent sentence. Second, it cannot suggest emojis for emoji-only messages, where the users use only emojis without any text. To overcome these issues, we present Reeboc (Recommending emojis based on context), which combines machine learning and k-means clustering to analyze the conversation of a chat, extract different emotions or topics of the conversation, and recommend emojis that represent various contexts to the user. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed emoji recommendation system and understand its effects on user experience, we performed a user study with 17 participants in eight groups in a realistic mobile chat environment with three different modes: (i) a default static layout without emoji recommendations, (ii) emoji recommendation based on the current single sentence, and (iii) our emoji recommendation model that considers the conversation. Participants spent the least amount of time in identifying and selecting the emojis of their choice with Reeboc (38% faster than the baseline). They also chose emojis that were more highly ranked with Reeboc than with current-sentence-only recommendations. Moreover, participants appreciated emoji recommendations for emoji-only messages, which contributed to 36.2% of all sentences containing emojis. ©

This paper characterizes six years of final projects from an interaction design master's program at our school of design in Hong Kong. Our reporting includes a thematic analysis of the specific application areas in which these diverse designers made their choices, along the dimensions of values and vision (Should Do), concepts and approaches (Can Do), domain knowledge (Can Know), and interactive Forms. The dimensions of Should Do and Can Do are particularly privileged in this paper. In this particular reporting of our analysis, we are especially interested in trends relating to sustainability and its relation to other values-orientations. This interest owes to our concern as a faculty for fostering a school of thinking and practice that balances all of these dimensions. Our analysis demonstrates the use and value of the Should Do, Can Do, Can Know framing as an analytical tool for design. Moreover, our work characterizes the common strategies among our 101 designers. As such, it provides a lens and points of inspiration for others, more generally.
